An overview of the Mandarin Oriental's newly introduced Mandarin Deluxe Room, which is the hotel's top tier room. The 64 m2 room is practically a Suite, by adjoining two rooms with separate Living and Bedroom area, interconnected through series of discreet sliding doors.

The spacious room has its own foyer, marked by dark timber louvres; and a separate study area next to the living room. It also features two 42" LCD TV with DVD players; mood lighting; 480-thread count linens to guarantee a restful sleep; ipod connectivity; and a spacious marble bathroom.

Although I personally think LTW Designworks could have put more wow-factor to the room design in comparison to its sister properties in Hong Kong, Tokyo and Singapore; it is still supremely comfortable.

But is it the best in Jakarta? Definately not. With serious teething problems encountered during my stay shortly after its Grand Opening, the Mandarin Oriental needs serious commitment to deliver excellence in customer service to reposition itself as the finest hotel in the capital. At the moment, it is messy and chaotic; and certainly not ready to anticipate guests yet.

Like a good wine, we just have to see when it has matured in the near future....

The latest edition of Travel+Leisure magazine has been released. It's the much anticipated Hotel Issue with coverage of its annual It List with 50 handpicked new top hotels across the globe; and also the announcement of the 2011 World's Best Service.

The winner? Mandarin Oriental Dhara Dhevi in Chiang Mai tops the chart as the #1 resort in the world with the best service. It comes as no surprise as this hotel has consistently topped the chart at Conde Nast's annual Gold List Award for the fourth consecutive year in Chiang Mai, and second only to the perfectly scored Four Seasons Tented Camp in Golden Triangle in overall global rating.

Having stayed at the resort recently, it is easy to see why this award-winning hotel has been so successful: Breathtaking Lanna architecture, palatial decor, impressive village setting, beautiful villas and residence, amazing spa, and impeccable service. During the two weeks travel, MO Dhara Dhevi was clearly one of the stand outs for service. Ironically, it was pretty much heaven and earth experience compared to its much older and legendary sister in Bangkok. More on this on later posts. It seems that MO Bangkok only extends its service to the head of states, dignitaries and celebrities only, and not to the average Joe like myself.

Things were different at MO Chiang Mai, thank goodness. From check-in to check-out, everything ran smoothly and the very hospitable Australian GM, Greg Liddell , was always present to welcome and farewell guests' journey at the hotel. A veteran to the hospitality world, Greg was formerly the GM for one of the Amanresorts and it is easy to see why the hotel has achieved much success under his leadership.

But the real star during the stay was the goddes-like Ms. Nuch, the Guest Relations Manager. She truly understands what is expected in a world class hotel; what a guest needs; and delivered the most impeccable service: very genuine, friendly and professional. All my requests were handled perfectly and efficiently, it put all the staffs at other top hotels and even MO Bangkok to shame.

The secret? it all comes from the heart. Ms. Nuch is very passionate about her work and it translates very well to her performance. It comes at no surprise when I accidentally met another staff at other hotel who coincidentally has worked with her before, praising her as a good role model and her idol. What a superstar. She is truly an asset to the Mandarin Oriental group; and I wish one day she could give a proper training to all the staffs at MO Bangkok..

Shown here is one of the six palatial, top-tier category Deluxe Residence with a private pool overlooking the lush terraced rice paddies field.

Southwest Employment Area is such an uninspiring name for a neighborhood.

Street parking is hard to come by in this area. But these gents will happily whisk your vehicle away.
