The Christmas lights were turned on in Manchester on Saturday and the German Market will be up next weekend (the 2015 market was voted the 9th best German Market in Europe, which was the best in the UK, in the 'European Best Destinations' online poll by the way!). Some say, at seven weeks away, it is a bit early; but it is good to have something to distract us from the gloomy winter!

OK so here goes. These shots were taken 2 weeks ago in Manchester City Centre (UK). They were taken on St Peter's Square behind the iconic Town Hall building where quite a large tented village has developed 'housing' a good number of homeless people.

What struck me was the sheer irony of the upbeat statements on the advertising hoardings versus the sad reality that these homeless people face and my thanks go out to fellow contributor Eddie Coulson who recently posted a really thought provoking image of this scene.

Manchester is a city with a deep and very proud history which has been all about it's workers. At the same time it's modern and forward looking. I do believe that the Mayor of the City has great intentions in seeking to eradicate homelessness so lets get on with it. Why wait? Actions ultimately speak louder than words.

From my side I took a couple of decent images, I just couldn't decide which was stronger, colour or mono so in the end I decided to combine the two which hopefully helps make a more powerful statement.

It feels good to upload an image after more than a month :D

Water Rail (Rallus aquaticus)

0600.29.10.2020

In my last post, I said that my next upload will be of a water rail but one that is different to anything you have seen before or are likely to see again. Well, here it is. The Water Rail is roosting on the 5th-floor windowsill of the town hall in the centre of Manchester. I got a telephone call from Dave Barlow (Bio-Diversity officer and all-round good egg) telling me the bird was there and he was concerned for its welfare. Dave appears in the image. The bird was aware of human presence but we shielded the bird with a board so that it could roost undisturbed. It was gone the following morning. I took a few images but could not get a clear view through an open window so had to photograph through a glass window. The poor light and slightly dirty window did not assist in getting a totally clean shot. However, I believe content trumps image quality. The image was made with a bog-standard lens that was provided free with my 20D back in 2004. Sadly I lost the lens about two years ago in the Irwell valley and cannot make my mind up as to what I should replace it with. Indecision is my greatest flaw!

Final note. I have seen many water rails but never appreciated quite how small they are. The body is not much bigger than a starling's body...expectation and mental references can force one to make false presumptions in regard to both size and colour. I am sure I am not the only victim.

He looks a bit like 'Zippy' this year for some reason?

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year to everyone who has supported me during 2020. Thanks

in preparation for a wedding this weekend

What a lovely day! The last two years that we've done this Bike to Work Day event, it's absolutely flung it down all morning... hurrah for blue skies!

The sound of punk rock may have been shaking up the nation in 1977 but in Manchester’s famous Albert Square life carried on much the same as always.

Far from the filth and the fury, a constable of Greater Manchester Police kneels at the roadside and gives directions to a motorist while his colleague look on.

Ironically, the image was taken just yards from the site of the famous gig by the punk pioneers The Sex Pistols at the Lesser Free Trade Hall just a year earlier.

Manchester Town Hall can bee seen in the background and in those days traffic flowed past the buildings front door.

This image is taken from a series used for recruitment purposes at the time.

Gone are the days of rainbows

Gone are the nights of swinging from the stars

For the sea will swallow up the mountains

And the sky will throw thunder-bolts and sparks

Straight at you

But I'll come a-running

Straight to you

For I am captured

One more time.
