A visit to Laurent Manade, a ranch in the Camargue area of France noted for the raising of semi-feral Camargue cattle and horses. This Manade belongs to the Laurent family for three generations; this vast estate extends from the heart of the Camargue to within a cable’s length from the sea and the lake of Vaccarès. The bulls are bred to perform in the arena in the “course camarguaise” a bloodless spectacle (for the bulls) in which the objective is to snatch a rosette from the head of a young bull with a claw-shaped metal hook called a crochet. The breeding of Camargue horses goes hand in hand with that of the bulls.
