Van Hool A360K MAN (03/04/2003)

I realised I don't think I have put up any photos recently of the new'ish addition to our family. I'm a bad daddy. His sister is so charasmatic and such a show pony (and cute of course) so I've only posted photos of her lately. But Little Mr Bullfrog is really starting to develop his a personality. He is 9 months old now. He seems so happy with life and happy with whatever and whoever comes along. I once had that carefree attitude. I aspire to get that back but life has sucked much of that out of me over the years :(

I can't wait to see the man he grows in to. Whilst Bullfrog and his sister Bear do share some visual similarities, at comparable ages, they are chalk and cheese. He is very grunty and is either happy or sad with nothing really in between. Ellie was so incredibly switched on and emotive even at the same age. I know all parents are biased but our little girl strikes me as the most incredibly bright and articulate 2 year old I've ever met. I don't think Lachlan will be the same. But that is a good thing. He is going to be such a different character. It will be fantastic to see what he likes doing. Will he find words and take to them like Ellie? Will he find movement and run around like the madman that my mother describes me as being (aka hyperactive to the max, keep him away from the fruitloops)? Or will he be somewhere in between.

Its also going to be interesting to see how our bond develops over time. To say that our daughter is a daddys girl is a bit of an understatement. Its incredible and I know it is also a touch upsetting for mum who does most of the heavy lifting. I am tougher on Ellie, I get annoyed and angry with her more and I do less of the fun stuff day to day than my wife. And yet she yeah can't walk into the next room without asking Daddy to come with her. Is this hard wired behaviour? On that basis is Lachie likely to be a mummys boy? Who knows.

I'm looking forward to finding out. I'm looking forward to taking him to the park to play basketball / football / ballet or whatever path he chooses. I want him to follow is dreams in the way that I never did. I want him to have the confidence to tackle anything that his heart desires in the way that I now realise I didn't.

I have achieved a fair amount in my life. But I still always feel a bit like the kid who had 'shows great potential' written on his report card. I don't think I have ever really blamed my circumstances for any short comings I have as a person or for not achieving things in life that I now believe I could have. But I have been guilty at times of not chasing my dreams due to fear of failure. Its easy to say 'look I got an A and I didn't even try'. But inside you always know you wanted that A+ but where too afraid to fail so you didn't commit to it.

I guess with parenting, the imperative is there not to fail and it pushes you to try better and go for the A +. But then you have to balance that desire with the reality that you have created for yourself in your past life.

I have many successes in life but also a few failings that really hold me back. I hope that I can become a role model for my children and help them overcome some of the failings that I have shown. I don't expect them to be perfect. I want them to learn from my mistakes and give life everything they have.

At this stage, I am pretty confident they will do this. And hopefully make me rich as famous scientists / educators / journalists / sports people / artists / writers / prime ministers / engineers / lawyers / doctors...

Not really. I will be happy as long as they try and and as long as they listen and care.

Thanks for listening and caring!

Isn't he a handsome little chubby chunks?

The Porsche 924 is an automobile produced by Porsche AG of Germany from 1976 to 1988. A two-door, 2+2 coupé, the 924 replaced the 914 as the company's entry-level model, and was the model that finally retired the 912. In production terms, the 924 was the first Porsche model powered by a water-cooled, front-mounted engine although the similarly configured 928 was designed first. The front-engine, rear wheel drive arrangement was normal for most other manufacturers, but it was unusual for Porsche having previously only used mid- or rear-mounted engines of a boxer configuration, all of which had been air-cooled. It was the first Porsche to be offered with a fully automatic transmission.

The first official appearance of the 924 took place in November 1975 (as a press launch rather than a motorshow appearance) at the harbour at La Grande Motte, Camargue in the south of France. The model was a success and not only helped to take Porsche out of financial ruin, but created the revenue stream needed to continue building and developing the 911. The 924 was replaced by the 944 in 1983 in the U.S. market, but continued to be produced until 1985 for other markets.

For the 1986 to 1988 model years the car acquired the powerplant from the 944 model and became the Porsche 924S.

. . . the Dani people are the most friendly people on earth! Every time I met a Dani during my trekking through Western New Guinea they dropped their luggage, came to me and hugged me . . .

_______________________________________________

The Baliem Valley, also spelled Balim Valley and sometimes known as the Grand Valley, of the highlands of Western New Guinea, is occupied by the Dani people. The main town in the valley is Wamena. The valley is about 80 km in length by 20 km in width and lies at an altitude of about 1,600-1,700 metres, with a population of over 200,000.

As far as the outside world was concerned, the discovery of the Baliem Valley and the unexpected presence of its large agricultural population was made by Richard Archbold’s third zoological expedition to New Guinea in 1938. On 21 June an aerial reconnaissance flight southwards from Hollandia (now Jayapura) found what the expedition called the ‘Grand Valley’. Since then the valley has gradually been opened up to a limited amount of tourism.

___________________________________________

The Dani people, also spelled Ndani, and sometimes conflated with the Lani group to the west, are a people from the central highlands of western New Guinea (the Indonesian province of Papua).

They are one of the most populous tribes in the highlands, and are found spread out through the highlands. The Dani are one of the most well-known ethnic groups in Papua, due to the relatively numerous tourists who visit the Baliem Valley area where they predominate. "Ndani" is the name given to the Baliem Valley people by the Moni people, and, while they don't call themselves Dani, they have been known as such since the 1926 Smithsonian Institution-Dutch Colonial Government expedition to New Guinea under Matthew Stirling who visited the Moni.

LANGUAGE

Linguists identify at least four sub-groupings of Dani languages:

Lower-Grand Valley Dani (20,000 speakers)

Mid-Grand Valley Dani (50,000 speakers)

Upper-Grand Valley Dani (20,000 speakers)

and the Lani or Western Dani (180,000 speakers)

The Dani languages differentiate only two basic colours, mili for cool/dark shades such as blue, green, and black, and mola for warm/light colours such as red, yellow, and white. This trait makes it an interesting field of research for language psychologists, e.g. Eleanor Rosch, eager to know whether there is a link between way of thought and language.

FIRST CONTACT

A small fringe group of the Dani, living south of Puncak Trikora and presenting themselves as the Pesegem and the Horip tribes, were met on October 29, 1909, by the Second South New Guinea Expedition led by Hendrikus Albertus Lorentz, who stayed several nights in their village. First contact with the populous Western Dani was made in October 1920 during the Central New Guinea Expedition, which group of explorers stayed for six weeks with them at their farms in the upper Swart River Valley (now Toli Valley). The Grand Valley Dani were only sighted in the summer of 1938 from an airplane by Richard Archbold.

CULTURE

Sweet potatoes are important in their local culture, being the most important tool used in bartering, especially in dowries. Likewise pigs feasts are extremely important to celebrate events communally; the success of a feast, and that of a village big man (man of influence) or organiser, is often gauged by the number of pigs slaughtered.

The Dani use an earth oven method of cooking pig and their staple crops such as sweet potato, banana, and cassava. They heat some stones in a fire until they are extremely hot, then wrap cuts of meat and pieces of sweet potato or banana inside banana leaves. The food package is then lowered into a pit which has been lined with some of the hot stones described above, the remaining hot stones are then placed on top, and the pit is covered in grass and a cover to keep steam in. After a couple of hours the pit is opened and the food removed and eaten. Pigs are too valuable to be served regularly, and are reserved for special occasions only.

Ritual small-scale warfare between rival villages is integral to traditional Dani culture, with much time spent preparing weapons and treating any resulting injuries. Typically the emphasis in battle is to insult the enemy and wound or kill token victims, as opposed to capturing territory or property or vanquishing the enemy village.

Changes in the Dani way of life over the past century are tied to the encroachment of modernity and globalization, despite tourist brochures describing trekking in the highlands with people from the 'stone age'. Observers have noted that pro-independence and anti-Indonesian sentiment tends to run higher in highland areas than for other areas of Papua. There are cases of abuses where Dani and other Papuans have been shot and/or imprisoned trying to raise the flag of West Papua, the Morning Star.

ETHNOGRAPHIC STUDIES

In 1961, as a member of the Harvard-Peabody study, filmmaker Robert Gardner began recording the Dani of the Baliem River Valley. In 1965, he created the film Dead Birds from this experience. Gardner emphasizes the themes of death and people-as-birds in Dani culture. "Dead birds" or "dead men" are terms the Dani use for the weapons and ornaments taken from the enemy during battle (wim). These trophies are displayed during the two day dance of victory (edai) after an enemy is killed.

Michael Rockefeller, son of former Vice-President of the United States Nelson Rockefeller, was a member of the Harvard-Peabody study and involved in the production of Dead Birds. While conducting further research on the Asmat people elsewhere in New Guinea, Michael Rockefeller disappeared. His body was never found.

WIKIPEDIA

the artist made a series of concept art that would have hopefully been the designs that a bunch of maquettes would have been made from. unfortunately these were never produced.

Hey Y'all!!! I've worn a bunch of Lady & Sons tees before(and theres more to come!) But this one has some genuine Hoe Cake and Cheese Biscuit Stains on it. I've also never shown y'all the logo on the front so here it is!!!! "Worth the Weight" used to be one of the slogans on the back and if you haven't had the food from the Lady & Sons yet, make a trip this summer and enjoy food that really is worth it!

I have a couple gems for you today. I found a couple Tracy Morgan commercials that spawned the a slogan we all used to rock in Savannah and at the Lady... "Every Day I Do!!" Check it out....Mr. Morgan is a fucking comedic genius! www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5HFk9IMSBg Here's another one he did with Ben Wallace... www.youtube.com/watch?v=eaNePyiSIJ8 These rank up the with the Reebok/Terry Tait( www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RszOED5HoA and www.youtube.com/watch?v=wuTBVG73G3Y&feature=related ) commercials as some of the best sports related commercials of all time!!!! YOU KILL THE JOE, YOU MAKE SOME MO!
