National breast cancer awareness month has had two decades of building breast cancer awareness and hope for future generations.
This may be TMI, but I wanted to share that today was my first mammogram. I’ve put it off 5 years, but no longer. It wasn’t the least bit painful, so I’m committed to going yearly from now on.

It's the end of a busy couple of weeks, that have seen both Adrienne and I in hospital, hopefully both now on the up, but I just want to say to all of you who are of a similar age, men stay on top of your prostate PSA tests, and women have your regular mammograms. Vigilance can actually save your life!

Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Carol and Shane's Pink Provence Roses are blooming.
Perfect timing for my annual reminder for all women to self examine, have the mammogram or scans. And don't believe it is only an older women's disease. Di was just 22 when first diagnosed, on Christmas Eve 1999, with a second diagnosis in 2009. We thank God for her healing and two miracle children born in 2011 and 2012, after both diagnoses and treatments.
And all you men out there, please encourage your special ladies to do the checks.
Also for October - A Month In 31 Pictures.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month! I prefer to post a new image every other week when possible, but chose to post this shot one week after the last, to promote a very important message.
A mammogram + early detection can help save a woman’s life. Be educated about fighting breast cancer, and please share the message.
I love long exposure photography. The effects intrigue me, and even though I plan to capture a specific look with each shot, the resulting image often surprises me.
What I attempt to convey using this technique, is the surreal, but not unreal. An image that represents light and color detail in almost every part of the recorded scene.

**OCTOBER IS BREAST CANCER AWARENESS MONTH**
With my last new image for the month, I am hoping to make more people aware of the importance of regular mammograms. If discovered early enough, a woman can beat cancer. I did not know this, until witnessing it firsthand. It made me realize how important it is to share this message.
The gathering at North Lake takes place at sunrise, during fall in the Eastern Sierras. I arrived here while it was still dark, and was greeted by an early season snow storm. Using my headlamp to navigate the area, I quickly found a spot to set up, just before the place became overrun with photographers. The storm broke for a short time during sunrise, allowing for a small window of opportunity to capture this subtle High Sierra Mountain light.

A girl of ten has become the youngest person in America to be diagnosed with breast cancer.
Hannah Powell-Auslam has already undergone a mastectomy on her left breast.
Now she has been told the cancer has spread to a lymph node and she will need further treatment.
Doctors in California said they believe Hannah, who is at least two years away from typical puberty, is the youngest person to suffer from breast cancer.

October is breast cancer awareness month.
My mother died of breast cancer.
5 years later, my doctor at the time found a lump in me, It was biopsied, the cells were irregular, but judged benign.
The following year, a new lump was back in the same place the other had been removed. My doctor suggested only that if it was there the following year he'd order a mammogram.
I objected and said I want one now, so he ordered it.
It was cancer and I am now 35 plus years post breast cancer.
Please, get your check ups and don't hesitate to speak up.
To all those fighting this, my heartfelt thoughts and support.

Hello Flickr Friends
I'm back much sooner than I thought for which I am elated about when you read on.
The reason I thought I may be off for a while was I had found a swollen lymph node in my armpit near where I had surgery 2.5 years ago to remove a small growth in my milk duct. Anyway, I found it about 6-7 weeks ago, but the Pandemic has made it near impossible to get a doctors appt. I eventually got one and then waited a month for a referral to the hospital. Yesterday morning I finally had my appointment, I had 4 Mammograms and an Armpit scan. All is good, my breast tissue is clear and all healthy no return of any growths. They even showed me my titanium pin from my previous surgery (looks like a lock on the scan) My lymph node is larger than it should be, but with the parameters they are happy with. They have marked my under arm and I am to check it regularly and will follow up with a further scan when and if needed. Ladies, please check your breasts, don't be afraid. I have been cautious and lucky. I thought I may be off as I was terrified like last time I'd have to have surgery and was so worried. Today I am just so happy to carry on as normal, but keeping an eye on things.
Anyway, I went on a beautiful October run this morning, the light was amazing, the cobwebs were lit up like jewels. When I got back I took this image of the light cascading through the trees and woodland towards the end of my land.
Have a wonderful and happy Monday and get checking, seeing and feeling your way around your boobies.

here's a timeline... a week ago thursday 10/16 v went for her annual mammogram which turned into a sonogram... then monday 10/20 v had her biopsy... then on tuesday 10/21 we got the lab results... cancer... then shock set in... then on 10/22 we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary... i'll let v finish the story...
I have some crummy news to share with you. There's not an easy way to say this so I'll be blunt. I have been diagnosed with infiltrating lobular cancer in one breast. At this point I don't know the exact treatment of it; I just know I have it. On Oct 28 I will go for a dedicated breast MRI to collect images of both breasts - to better detect exactly the size and extent of the cancer. The MRI is state-of-the-art. It images 128 views of each breast, and if I understood her right - it does so three times! (I'll be in it for an hour). On Nov 4 my husband, Tom, and I have a consult with a surgeon. We will find out then the treatment plan to kick it's butt. We are on pins and needles until the 4th. We are doing our research, talking to friends, etc - but until then we don't know what's next.
It appears to be caught early - about 1 cm. The radiologist is very thorough. She was surprised the mammogram even picked it up. She and her sister have both had breast cancer; she is diligent about early detection.
Anthony and Katie know I have breast cancer and will be having surgery.
Praying for the best news possible from here on out,
Veronica
p.s. Please stay up to date on your mammograms!
v is a fighter... we will get through this... and we will keep y'all up to date as we travel down this path...
"We share because we care"
Two years ago, I had my annual mammogram. No big deal right. Never thought anything else about it.
Then a letter came addressed to me, I can still remember the feeling. The letter stated I needed to return for a second test because something abnormal was on my right breast. My husband and I did not tell the kids. No need to worry them.
I scheduled the appointment for the second mammogram. So when they called my name, I thought "no one" in my family has ever had breast cancer. (talking to myself) So I asked the technican what was going to happen today -- she said they would perform a more indepth mammogram and have the specialist review. If at that time there was still something they would perform a sonogram.
So they performed the mammogram, then left me in the room to wait. I looked at the images from the first sonogram and saw the large mass on the right breast. My stomach felt sick. I thought to myself would my family be okay, would they be taken care of. (just typing this still makes my stomach hurt).
The technican returned and said I would need to have the sonogram. I am fighting to keep the tears at that moment from flowing (because I had requested my hubby to go on to work because I felt for sure everything would be okay).
So I went for the sonogram -- after it was completed, the technican said wait here and let the specialist review. Wait, wait!
I felt like that 15 minutes was hours -- the thoughts that ran through my mind. I was at that moment more worried about what if and how my family would be taken care of.
The technican returned and stated it was just a large mass (more of a discoloration in the top portion of my right breast). She stated all was okay. Let me say that again "all was okay". Wonderful words.
I left the hospital and returned to my car. I cried from relief.
Meanwhile, my poor husband had not heard from me (panic). He had left work and was almost to the hospital when I called him with the good news.
special message from the cookie mom: sure october is the official breast cancer awareness month, but please get your annual mammogram whatever month it is due...

A woman's nightmare
is to be called to her doctor's
office and hear the worst of all news
- breast cancer. Why me? Never
smoked in my life, no knowned family history of cancer,
questions still left unanswered.
Almost a year of extensive treatment, lumpectomy,
chemotheraphy and radiation theraphy and I am now
back on track.
Here I am telling everyone that
if caught early, breast cancer can
be conquered.
During this lowest point of my life, I
picked up the camera and started
taking pictures and discovered
my greatest potential - photography.
Thank you all for your encouragement
and inspiration.
Ladies, please have your regular mammogram, and
men encourage the women in you life to do so too.
Psalm 24 was an inspiration to me.

My mother died of breast cancer.
5 years later, my doctor at the time was going to ignore the lump he'd found in me, suggesting only that if it was there the following year he'd order a mammogram.
I strongly disagreed. He ordered it then.
I am now 35 years post breast cancer.
Please......check ups, speak up.
To all those fighting this, my heartfelt hope and support.
Leaving it minimal and simple today. I tried a couple of different compositions but they sort of fell flat. It has been a good morning though. I won a breast cancer awareness mug, towel, hairband and bracelet at Jazzercise this morning, yay me. Now to be fair there were only 2 of us in the drawing so my odds of winning were pretty good. With it being breast cancer awareness month, this is my public service announcement to remind you to get your mammograms or nag those you love to get theirs. Breast cancer awareness day is Oct. 21st.
Flickr toys gives us presents a few times each year. These have not been all on Explore. These are my most popular pics that are on flickr. The key to curing breast cancer is early detection and prompt treatment. A physical examination, mammography and breast self-examination (BSE) make up the conventional early detection approach...
Due to modern mammography equipment and techniques, women only receive a minimal amount of radiation during the procedure. With the newer techniques that are available, a large percentage of the cancer is detected when the tumors are 2 centimeters or smaller. Two x-rays are taken of each breast during mammography, one from above and one from the side. A specially trained physician called a radiologist reads the mammogram to see if any suspicious areas exist. Routine mammography screening appears to reduce breast cancer mortality by approximately 25%.

National Breast Cancer Awareness Month
Celebrating 25 Years of Awareness, Education, and Empowerment
The National Breast Cancer Awareness Month (NBCAM) organization is a partnership of national public service organizations, professional medical associations, and government agencies working together to promote breast cancer awareness, share information on the disease, and provide greater access to screening services.
In 2009, NBCAM celebrates its 25th anniversary. Since its inception a quarter century ago, NBCAM has been at the forefront of promoting awareness of breast cancer issues and has evolved along with the national dialogue on breast cancer. Today, NBCAM recognizes that although many great strides have been made in breast cancer awareness and treatment, there remains much to be accomplished. As we celebrate our 25th anniversary, we remain dedicated to educating and empowering women to take charge of their own breast health by practicing regular self-breast exams to identify any changes, scheduling regular visits and annual mammograms with their healthcare provider, adhering to prescribed treatment, and knowing the facts about recurrence.
While October is recognized as National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, the NBCAM Web site is a year-round resource for breast cancer patients, survivors, caregivers, and the general public. We encourage you to visit our site in October and regularly throughout the year as we add updated breast cancer information and resources.

Okay, now for my reason why I love flickr so much.
I'll try to make a long story short as possible. Back in mid-June before I had to leave for Oregon unexpectedly I had my annual mammogram. While in Oregon I received a call from my doctor that my mammogram showed a spot and I need to get another mammogram and an ultrasound immediately. Holy Crap! Okay, so here I am in Oregon my father is dying and now this. So I made arrangements to go to a local hospital and get my second mammogram and ultrasound done there (I would have to pay out of pocket w/no insurance coverage); however, in the meantime my father passes away and I'm dealing with that. So one week later I go to have my mammogram in Oregon only to find out my physician in Hilo did not send the proper documents even though I signed all the release papers and the womens center sent my doctor two written requests. So hell, I can't get my follow up because the office that said it should not wait - screwed up the paperwork so I could not get it done. Go figure! The Oregon hospital refused my appointment without the previous films to compare! Okay, so now I have to wait until I return to Hawaii which I knew at that time it would be weeks as I was planning my fathers funeral, dealing with all the paperwork and details, packing up his belongings, etc.
This is where flickr comes in. Although I did not have my own computer there, whenever I could get my hands on one I would go to flickr and check out my friends photos that would put a smile on my face. As soon as I landed back in Hawaii I had 4 days of waiting until my appointment - I spent as much of those days online in flickr as my computer would allow - I had so many computer problems until 7 pm this evening, it was difficult but it kept my mind off the situation facing me.
Good news to report - I am fine and do not need a biopsy (this year). I went through this last year and needed a biopsy - absolutely the scariest time of my entire life but thank goodnes it was negative. My mother had it, her mother had it - so...
Anyway, that's why I love flickr - it's therapeutic in so many ways you cannot imagine!

Welcome 2005
I wanted to start the New Year of 2005 with some profound understanding of where I was heading in the next year of my life. I wanted to be able to wrap my fingers around some concrete knowledge, which would aid me in a zen-like state, where I could rise above my body and see the world and everything around myself for what it is, or what I could pretend it was. But I am afraid I can do nothing of the sort. All I can aim for is a pause in the breath of a day, where the blue sky will bring me the ultimate pleasure, or the song of a bird will possess more vibrancy than the total minutes taken to walk the surface of the moon. As I look at this picture of myself with my newly cut hair in preparation for chemo, I want to take this time to thank each and every single love, friend, companion, and hand-holding person who has assisted me thus far in this unusual journey I am facing. Thank you dearly for supporting me and being my friend. Thank you for your phone calls and your words which have meant everything. Thank you. May we all be blessed with the sweet song of a bluebird sitting pretty on our shoulders leading the way to
profound love and friendship in the coming year of 2005.

I was so happy to get another one of these. My original Thingamaboob broke and I got it at the Ashton Pub in Ashton Ontario before we moved here.
The Thingamaboob is more than just a keychain, it is your key to early detection of breast cancer. It is put out by the Canadian Cancer Society.
Each ball on the chain represents the size of a lump that can be detected. See notes.
As the card with the Thingamaboob says "Be aware. Be proactive. Get the facts."
Only certain Provinces carry the Thingamaboob check out boobagram.cancer.ca/thing-a-ma-boob.asp
to see if you can purchase one in your area.
Also, you can spread the word by sending the women in your life a "Boob - a - gram". It is a light-hearted email greeting that reminds your loved ones the importance of being breast aware! Visit www.cancer.ca/boobagram to send yours today!

*sigh* My favorite color and my favorite thing to wear in the winter (along with my boots)........ along with some nice warm pants, too. GLEN! LOL!
This isn't the greatest. It was taken with my 50mm, handheld, natural light with my phone tucked between my head and shoulder while I talked to my best friend on the phone. LOL! Oh well!
Have a wonderful pink Tuesday and all you ladies be sure and have your mammograms if you are of age and haven't already. You gotta' stay healthy my friends! *MWAH*
taken at Group Health (an HMO). The radiology technicians got a laugh out of it.
It's from an advertisement at the coffee bar - an image of a piece of fruit.
Saturday morning, and I'm already back home from my mammogram appointment. Yuk! But it's gotta be done!
I know everyone is tired of my little "sweet" or "cute" or "pretty" shots. Enough with the sweetness, already! LOL!
So here's just a quick shot, before we head back out to do some Christmas shopping!
