Sunset at Cape Maclear, Lake Malawi National Park, Malawi, Africa

The jewel in the crown of the Malawi’s tourist attractions is Lake Malawi, “discovered” by the missionary-explorer Dr David Livingstone just over 150 years ago.

It is the ninth largest lake in the world and the third largest and second deepest lake in Africa. Its approximate dimensions are 580 km north to south and 80 km broad, hence the sobriquet: "the calendar lake". The Lake, in the north, is quite extraordinarily deep with 700 m, plunging well below sea level. This reflects the enormity of the natural faulting of the Great Rift Valley, which is the origin of the Lake.

It is home to more species of fish than any other lake, including about 1000 species of cichlids.

Zomba town and Mulanje mountain from Queen's View, Zomba plateau, Malawi, Africa

Mount Mulanje is an isolated granite massif, covering over a thousand square kilometers. From a distance, it's hard to believe Mulange is not a range of mountains, it seems long rather than high. Yet it is so tall that it creates its own climate, and it known to be unkind, even lethal to lose who dare take the mountain for granted.

We were staying by Lake Malawi when I went out to try to find some wildlife. This little guy was sunbathing on a rock a little distance from me . I took this shot of him before approaching carefully for a closer image but he was gone in a flash !!!

Early morning at the Chitimba shore of Lake Malawi. A local family on their way to the communal area where the fishing activities take place.

At the same moment, far on the horizon above the water surface, the famous huge swarms of tiny lake flies (Chaoborus edulis) can be observed, often be mistaken for plumes of smoke by visitors. In fact, it represents the largest gathering of any species in the world. Billions upon billions of flies, engaged in the act of procreating.

Cyrtocara moorii, or by it's old name more generally known as Haplochromis moorii, is a popular aquarium fish. Males develop a nice nuchal hump that is the source of the common name the Malawi Blue Dolphin. The species is popular among aquarium keepers where it is also known as the Humphead Cichlid, Blue Dolphin Cichlid, Malawi Dolphin or simply as Moorii.

Cyrtocara moorii is found in relatively shallow waters (3 to 15 m deep) over sandy areas in Lake Malawi in east Africa. Males grow up to 25 cm in length, and females grow up to 20 cm. They are varying shades of blue, ranging from turqoise to a silvery-blue, and grow a distinctive hump on their forehead. Juveniles are silver and begin taking on blue coloring at around 4 cm.
