Malang - a type of wandering mystic at Sufi shrine. He has decorated himself with kind stickers and badges.

Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park is located in East Java, Indonesia, to the east of Malang and to the southeast of Surabaya, the capital of East Java. It is the only conservation area in Indonesia that has a sand sea, the Tengger Sand Sea (Indonesian: Laut Pasir Tengger), across which is the caldera of an ancient volcano (Tengger) from which four new volcanic cones have emerged. This unique feature covers a total area of 5,250 hectares at an altitude of about 2,100 m. The massif also contains the highest mountain in Java, Mount Semeru (3,676 m), four lakes and 50 rivers.

The Tengger Sand Sea has been protected since 1919. The Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park was declared a national park in 1982.

Every day in this hotel I was treated to some great late afternoon or early evening skies. One of the benefits of traveling during rainy season.

The Tengger caldera is a product of a massive and violent eruption about a hundred thousand and fifty years ago. From any of the peaks flanking around it, like this mountain range of Malang, the caldera is a surreal flat of volcanic gray sand. Misleadingly, the caldera does not look anywhere as high as the 2,000 meters elevation it really is.

phototip: The horizontality of layered mountain ranges can sometimes be served by panoramic crops.

A man with this get-up is called Malang in India and Pakistan. Some people believe that these Malangs are spiritual figures, others don't believe. But the type of Malang in this photo is (I think) not a spiritual one. He is carrying some pots containing dry herbs and other stuff, and these herbs emit fragrance when set on fire (although I never feel this fragrance). This Malang waves a hand-fan to spread the smoke in shops, and in return the people (usually shopkeepers) give him some money.

I spotted this Malang in a Sunday Bazar in Karachi. He was delighted when I pointed my 500D towards him, ge have a good pose and a smile. Thank you Mr. Malang !
