Even before humans could think of the spiked hairdo, this bird mastered the art, and looks several times more beautiful too.

The site at the corner of Victoria Street and Jalan Sultan was selected. It was next to an old Malabar Muslim cemetery, dating back to 1819.7 After finalising the construction plans, the foundation stone for the mosque was laid on 10 April 1956 in a ceremony officiated by the mufti of Johor, Tuan Syed Alwi Adnan, who represented Sultan Ibrahim bin Abu Bakar of Johor.8 A fund-raising project held to finance the construction, saw generous donations coming in from the public, Muslims and non-Muslims alike. On 24 January 1963, Malabar Mosque was declared open by Yang di-Pertuan Negara (Head of State) Yusof bin Ishak.9

Whenever I go to the Madayi area in Kannur district I spot this bird foraging on the ground. It is smaller and greyer than the Eurasian Skylark and also has a long erectile crest. It is very similar to the Crested Lark found in northern India.

Clicked from inside the car while the bird was on a rocky outcrop.

Malabar lark (Galerida malabarica)

The Malabar trogon (Harpactes fasciatus) is a species of bird in the trogon family. It is found in the forests of Sri Lanka and peninsular India. In India it is mainly found in the Western Ghats, hill forests of central India and in parts of the Eastern Ghats. They are insectivorous and although not migratory, may move seasonally in response to rain in hill forest regions. Like in other trogons, males and females vary in plumage.

The Malabar Lark, also called the Malabar Crested Lark, is a species of lark found in western India. This is a smallish lark, slightly smaller than the Eurasian Skylark. It has a long spiky erectile crest. It is greyer than the Skylark, and lacks the white wing and tail edges of that species, which is a winter visitor to India. It is a common bird of open country, cultivation and scrub, often at some altitude. Not too shy a bird and so easy to capture. This was clicked from the car and if the bird was a bit closer it would not have fully fit in the frame.

Malabar Gray Hornbill

Ocyceros griseus

A small gray hornbill with a casque-less pale bill, a black undertail with white tips, and a pale eyebrow. Sexes are alike, except that the females have black on the base of the bill. In flight, the white tips to the outer edges of the wings contrast strongly with the otherwise very dark undersides of the wings. It is found in evergreen forests and plantations. The call is a distinctive series of yelping sounds that rise to a crescendo, sounding like manic laughter.

Malabar Pied Hornbill (Anthracoceros coronatus) is a resident of Sri Lanka. An adult female. Belongs to Bucerotidae family. Captured at Udawalawe National Park,
