Birth
Hazrat Imam Hussain (A.S.) was born on the 3rd of Shaban 4th Hijrah in Medinah Munawarra. His father was Ali (A.S.) and mother was Fatimah (S.A.). When the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) heard the news of Imam Hussain's birth he (P.B.U.H.) became very happy and came to the house of Fatimah (S.A.). Asma, the maidservant of Hazrat Zahra covered the child in a white cloth and brought him to the Prophet (P.B.U.H.). The Prophet (P.B.U.H.), picked the child up in his lap and recited the Azaan in his right ear and Aqamat in the left one. As if, apparently, he (P.B.U.H.) made the ears of his son familiar and acquainted with the name of God for the first time. On the seventh day of the birth, an angel came from the God and he said, "Just as Haroon was the brother, sympathizer, and helper in each and every difficulty of Moosa (A.S.) similarly Ali (A.S.) is your sympathizer helper and brother in each and every matter of yours. Therefore, keep the name of this child upon the name of Haroon's son "Shabeer," which translated into Arabic becomes 'Hussain'. Thus the name of the second child of Fatimah (S.A.) was also selected by God.
On the 7th day of the birth Hazrat Fatimah (S.A.) got a sheep slaughtered as the Aqeeqa and distributed it's meat among the needy and poor.
The Prophet (P.B.U.H.) quite often hugged Hussain (A.S.) taking him into his lap and used to weep bitterly, saying, "A very big tragedy will be met by my son Hussain". The brutals and bloody men of Bani Omyaide will slay my dear son. I will not interces and mediate for them on the dooms day.
The Love of the Prophet (P.B.U.H.)
The Prophet (P.B.U.H.) loved Imam Hussain (A.S.) very much. His companion Salman Farsi describes, "I saw that the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) had picked up Imam Hussain (A.S.) upon his knee and was kissing him saying, "Oh son, you are the Imam son of Imams and father of nine Imams, who would be from your generation and the last one of them is Mehdi. "One can estimate and guess the amount of love the Prophet had with Imam Hussain (A.S.) from this sentence of his "Hussain is from me and I am from Hussain." The one who is the friend of Hassan and Hussain is my friend and the one who is their enemy, is my enemy.
Hussain (A.S.) the Best Helper of his Father and Brother
Imam Hussain (A.S.) spent six years of his life with his grandfather the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) and thirty years along with his honorable father Ali (A.S.). He shared each and every problem and grief of his father. He always defended his father. Once he went to the mosque and saw Hazrat Omer delivering a speech on the tribune of his grandfather. He immediately said, "get down from the tribune of my grandfather and father. What have you got to do over there?"
During the reign of his father, Imam Hussain (A.S.) playing upon his life used to be busy defending Islam and fighting against the tyrants and brutal.
He fought against the enemies by the side of his father like his brother Imam Hassan Mujtaba (A.S.) in the battles of Jamal, safeen, and Neherwan.
He, after the martyrdom of his father, legally took the oath of allegiance for his brother and accepted him his leader and Imam. And whenever someone asked him a question he used to send him towards Imam Hassan (A.S.). And wherever he deemed suitable he himself would give the answer. Briefly speaking, he considered the defense of his brother something necessary for himself.
The Rule of Muawiyah
When Imam Hassan Mujtaba (A.S.) was martyred due to the conspiracies of Muawiyah, Imam Hussain (A.S.) got the post of Imamate and caliphate at the age of forty-six.
Imam Hussain (A.S.) knew that all the miseries and sorrows of Muslims were due to Muawiyah who wanted to uproot Islam by his frauds, cunningness and craftiness. Therefore, Imam (AS.) did not think it was suitable to fight him openly, as Muawiyah was apparently Muslim and showed himself to be the supporter of Islam and Muslims. Therefore, Imam Hussain (A.S.) knew that if I declare a war upon him I would meet the same fate as my brother did. So he started the movement of awakening the people from the dream and slumbers of ignorance, and unawareness. So that they may turn towards him slowly and gradually, by getting aware and informed. Ultimately. Imam (A.S.) may make them work for the welfare of Islam. Along with the training of the Momins (faithful), with which Imam was busy, he occasionally opposed Muawiyah. And always gave teeth breaking and strong answer to his scurrilous language particularly when he started making people take the oath and allegiance of faithfulness for his ignorant, silly, impure, and bad character, degenerate, and undutiful son Yazeed. The Imam (A.S.) too started openly and publicly opposing him and wrote many such letters to Muawiyah by which he disgraced him very much. One of his letters reads:
i) Oh Muawiyah! You are the claimant of the caliphate and to be the successor of my grandfather? Did you not slay Hajar bin Addi and his companions in the land of Azra. You are a criminal, a killer. Then how do you claim to be the leader and caliph of my Ummah?
ii) Oh Muawiyah! Did you not declare Ziad publicly your brother and the illegitimate son of Abu Sufian about whose father the Muslims are unaware? (That who is his father and who is not?)
As such, by declaring him to be your brother, you have yourself admitted the dirtiness and uncleanness of your family. Then how can the caliphate be your right?
iii) Oh Muawiyah! The most shameful act of yours is that you have made such a silly, stupid unable and unworthy person a ruler of the Muslims whose characterless ness, excesses and aggressions are not hidden and concealed from anyone. As such, you want to destroy the religion of God and make the Muslim ummah a toy by forcibly making them take the oath of allegiance for him (Yazeed).
Hussain (A.S.) and Yazeed
Although Imam Hussain (A.S.) did not leave any stone unturned in disgracing and belittling Muawiyah even then he did not fight or clashed with him.
Nonetheless, after the death of Muawiyah his incapable son Yazeed being a proud and thickheaded person posed himself as the leader of the Muslims. And started making the Islamic personalities takes the oath of allegiance for the sake of establishing and strengthening his government.
He wrote to the governors of the cities and as such wrote a letter to Waleed who was governor of Medinah that "Immediately take the oath of allegiance from Hussain (A.S.) And if he refuses to do that then cut down his head and send it to me".
Muawiyah had several times insistedly warned him that you might dash against anybody except Hussain (A.S.), in which case you would get destroyed. The ruler of Medinah summoned Imam Hussain (A.S.) and informed him about the letter of Yazeed. He said "I am ready for the martyrdom because only Yazeed's becoming the caliph of Muslims is the death and disintegration of Islam".
When Imam (A.S.) observed the worsened condition and atmosphere of Medinah he along with his companions migrated to Makka under the dark cover of the night. His mere act of migration from Medinah was a great objection upon the people's taking oath of allegiance for Yazeed.
Imam's (A.S.) migration not only created a hue and cry in Medinah, but it also set up an atmosphere of discussion and objections against Yazeed in Makka. And the hue and cry raised to the climax when Imam (A.S.) addressing a gathering of the pilgrims raised his voice against the obnoxious, dirty, and impure government of Yazeed.
This stand and pledge of Imam Hussain (A.S.) made the people of the whole area completely aware and understand that the caliphate of Yazeed is not correct and taking oath of allegiance for him is dishonesty to Islam and Muslims.
The Invitation of Kufis
When the news of the migration and objection of Imam Hussain (A.S.) upon the Yazeed's regime reached Kufa. All of them (Kufis) got themselves prepared to invite him to Kufa and elect him for the caliphate and the leadership of Islam. They sent messengers along with letters, rolls and scrolls, and formally invited Imam Hussain (A.S.) to visit Kufa.
But, because of the fact that Imam (A.S.) knew about the unfaithfulness of the Kufis and he himself had witnessed their untruthfulness towards his father and brother so he sent his cousin 'Muslim bin Aqeel' to Kufa so that he might observe the whole affair closely and invite Imam (A.S.) if he deemed fit and suitable. Muslim bin Aqeel moved towards Kufa as desired and ordered by Imam (A.S.) and when he reached there he met a warm, noisy, grand welcome. Thousands of people took oath of allegiance and offered prayers behind him.
Muslim bin Aqeel wrote a letter to Imam (A.S.) asking him to immediately move. Imam stayed back at makka uptill the 8th of Zil Hijj and spoke to the people and instigated and provoked them against Yazeed. Then he moved towards Iraq.
Termination of the Imam's Representative's Affair
When Yazeed got informed about the movement of Muslim bin Aqeel and oath of allegiance being taken by the Kufis, he at once sent Ibn-e-Ziad, who was the most dirty of his companions, to Kufa with full fledge powers.
Ibn-e-Ziad, who completely knew about the spirit and the character of the people of Kufa, took advantage and made the most of the weakness and debility and feebleness of their faiths and double-faced ness hypocrisy and cowardice. And by terrifying and harassing scattered and dispersed them from around Muslim bin Aqeel. And turned the events to such an extent that even those who had written invitation letters to Imam (A.S.) put on the war dress and got ready to fight the representative of the Imam (A.S.).
"Muslim bin Aqeel" was forced to fight the agents of Ibn-e-Ziad all alone. After showing surprising and astonishing bravery he was arrested and martyred. From the very night Imam Hussain (A.S.) had departed from Madinah he had been giving the news of martyrdom and said, "Whosoever is ready to lay his life on our way and make haste to meet God may join us."
He again spoke to his friends and companions about Jehad, holy war, and martyrdom at Makka. To the extent that even when the poet Farzdak met him on the way and gave him the news of "Muslim bin Aqeel's" being martyred. He said, "Muslim bin Aqeel" has met the blessings of God and ended his mission and has laid the burden of the mission upon our shoulders. We hope to be able to carry this burden and weight up to its destination.
Hussain's (A.S.) Mission
Hussain (A.S.) described his aim about this mission was to disgrace Yazid's regime and to uphold and put into practice (Amer bil Maroof and Nahi anil munkir), to order the correct and right and to stop and refrain from the evils and to stand up against the brutality and cruelty. This was the mission God had entrusted him. His grandfather the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) and his father Ali (A.S.) had several times described their son's is being martyred.
Imam Hussain (A.S.) himself, by virtue of the knowledge of Imamate, knew that this journey would end with his martyrdom. But Hussain (A.S.) was not the one to be afraid of martyrdom and death, and overlook the command of God. He was the Imam who considered calamity as magnanimity and nobility and martyrdom as bliss and blessedness.
Ultimately, he moved toward "Karbala" and he himself and his companions were all martyred. His family members were taken prisoners. But they gave the message of those martyred to the people in the streets, and bazars of the cities and thus put the agents and paid servants of the Bani Omayaid to disgrace and shame.
The face of Hussain and his Companions on the Ashoora Day
Hussain's (A.S.) face glittered and shone like light He gave hope and courage to his companions. The same Imam (A.S.) whose grandfather the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) said, "Hussain (A.S.) is the lamp of guidance and the escape boat of the ummah". Hussain (A.S.) spoke loudly, "Oh people of the world! You must know that I have not taken steps for the battle and did not draw my sword.
An unclean, dirty character man from the criminal family of Omayde named "Yazeed" made me choose one of the two either I draw my sword and defend my honor and religion or surrender to shame and humility. But do know, beware! That surrendering with shame and humility is far away from our family. I am obliged to choose the first way.
Then he stood by the soldiers of Yazeed forces and said, "It is not expedient and wise both for your world and religion (the justice day) to kill me and fight against me. So, if you have taken the decision to fight me. It is better to compose and form a committee and take views from everyone. Then see who says fight against the son of the Prophet (P.B.U.H) who is the one gone astray and ill fated, miserable that accompanies and sides with you for killing me?
The governor of Iraq, son of Marjana, is an unclean and power seeking person. He wants to make you helpless. I know you will repent after my being martyred and will rebuke each other. Therefore, before taking steps for the battle, think and ponder about the result of your action. Be aware, God is my supporter and I am not harassed and bewildered by any coming event. I have heard from my grandfather that "World is the paradise of the infidel and the prison for the faithful."
Death is the beginning of our joy but it is the start of your misery. There is only one bridge between this world and the other world and that is death.
If you initiate and take steps towards battle, we would also stand up along with our friends and worthy sons for defense. If we are victorious it will not be anything new for us and if we are killed world knows that we are not defeated.
"Oh helpless people! The informed and knowledge full people try and endeavor to provide themselves with a lamp, so that they do not loose their way, and I am the lamp of this ummah. But you want to put your lamp off. Do you know against whom do you fight? You are not fighting against me but you fight against God! Against your Prophet (P.B.U.H.)."
After the speech of Imam Hussain (A.S.) an enthusiasm, humming, and murmuring movements took place in the army of the enemy. The war provokers saw that if they would not start the battle, Hussain (A.S.) will shatter the army by his speech and will finish all their planning. Therefore, the order for the battle to be started was issued.
Hussain (A.S.) called out, "Oh my worthy and great friends rise up, this is the time for the combat. His friends like Habib and Zuhair were happy that Imam issued the order. Each one of them requested the other to be allowed to go for battle first, hence take the lead.
The family members of Imam (A.S.) such as the Qamer-e-Bani Hashim (Abbas [A.S.]), Ali Akbar, Qasim and all the rest got prepared for the battle. They attacked the flanks of the enemy like tigers. Whosoever came their way would be killed. Imam Hussain (A.S.) himself showed such a bravery, courage and manhood that as Ibn Sheher Ashob wrote; he slew two thousand men of the enemy.
Whenever and whichever of the friends and relatives was martyred, Hussain (A.S.) would become stronger, and more resolved and determined. One of the soldiers of the enemy said about the astonishments and wonders of Ashoora, "on the day of Ashoora instead of becoming broken and sorrowful whenever Hussain (A.S.) lost a person by martyrdom his face would glow and shine more than before and he became more determined and stronger in the battle and combat.
The thirsty and hungry, but selfless and dedicated, holy warriors showed such bravery and ferocious fight that son of Saad the Commander of the enemy shouted, "If you want to fight like this, all of you will be killed by the swords of Hussain (A.S.) and his companions". Therefore, he ordered all the arrow men, who were nearly four thousand in number, to throw arrows simultaneously and harmoniously. The battle got flared up and reached a climax whosoever out of the Imam's companions would fall down he would utter these words, "Oh God do accept our sacrifice."
"The blessings of God be upon thou souls, oh movers and travelers of the way of God and Hussain (A.S.). Oh the venture some defender of the Quran's path. Hussain (A.S.), wherever blood flew out of his body, he would raise his hands towards the sky and say, Oh God, who is the source and stock of my hope and aspiration, I depend upon you. My hopes are focused upon you. Oh God! Accept these sacrifices from us."
Finally, as per the tradition of Shiekh Mufid, Hussain (A.S.) and his great honorable companions were martyred on Saturday the 10th of Moharram, of 61 Hijrah, and laid to rest side by side, to each other. They gave the lesson of honor, dignity, manhood and bravery to the future generations.
Why Hussain (A.S.) is not forgotten?
The one whose martyrdom, grief, pain, sorrows and children's captivity were all only for God will never fade out of the memories. Instead, by the pace of time and age his love, fascination, and charm will grow in the hearts of people. And each year the love and fascination of the people with respect to that "pure and chaste revolutionary" increases. Hussain (A.S.) spent 57 years of his prolific life for the sake of God's love and God's search. Many times he traveled, to the God's house for pilgrimage, on foot.
He was very fond of prayers confessions and supplication talking intimately. So far so, that on the last night of his life, he asked for respite only that he might sit all alone and make confessions and supplications, to his God.
One of his companions said about Arafat prayers and supplications of Imam Hussain (A.S.), On the 10th day of the month of Zil Hijj Imam Hussain stood in the burning and scorching desert of Arafat facing Holy Kaabah and prayed with painful and aching heart, "Oh God! I turn my face towards you (focus my attention) and give evidence about your being God. O God! You created me and continuously remained along with me and provided me with sustenance and livelihood with several kinds of blessings and bounties. Praise is for the God; nothing can change whose desire and stop His munificence and generosity."
"Oh God adjudge and fix in my soul the independence and freedom from desires and faith and confidence in my heart, and sincerity in my practice and light in my vision and awareness in my religion."
Hussain (A.S.) in the Hearts of Friends
The respect and regard which people had and still have in their hearts for Hussain (A.S.) is due to this that he lived with the people and did not consider himself aloof and segregated from them. As such, one day, he was passing through a way, a group of poor, oppressed and afflicted people was sitting with a food cloth, spread with a certain quantity of dry bread upon it before them and they were eating it. They invited him to sit along with them and eat that food with them. Imam (A.S.) accepted their invitation and sat down besides the food cloth and took the bread with them. Saying, "God does not like the proud ones."
Imam Hussain (A.S.) has hundreds of such examples and specimens of character, which keeps his memory and martyrdom alive in the memories of the people. With every passing year, people strengthen and deepen their relations with Hussain (A.S.).
Otherwise Hussain (A.S.) did neither possess magnificent palaces nor had soldiers or many types of servants. He never closed and blocked the ways and roads to stop the movement of people like the tyrants and imperialists, and Shrine of Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) was never vacated for him.
One of his friends said about him "Hussain (A.S.) had the signs of scars of callosity and hard flesh on his back" When his son Imam Zain ul Abidin was questioned about it he said, "These are the callosities and signs of hardened flesh which is due to my father's carrying sacks of food at night time, to the houses of widows and orphan children and poor families."
One of the scholars says about Hussain (A.S.), "In the history of humanity we come across men who were prominent and distinguished in one human quality, a few in bravery, a group in piety and another one in generosity, but Hussain (A.S.) was not distinguished and eminent in one quality and few qualities instead he was distinguished in all the qualities and ethics and possessed all the human perfections and accomplishments included in his personality.
Yes, such is the person who is the heir of Mohammad's (P.B.U.H.) Prophetic mission. Who is the heir of Ali's (A.S.) justice and bravery? Who is the heir of his mother Fatima's (S.A.) modesty and chastity?
He was the reflection of all the merits, accomplishments. Self sacrifices, piety and God's love.
What day is the Ashoora?
Ashoora was a formal Arab Eid day in the days and era of ignorance. People used to keep fast and make merry, and hold ceremonies of joy in the same manner as Nauroze was considered to be the Eid day in Iran.
In the Arab history, Ashoora day (10th of Moharram) was the historical and customary Eid, when the various tribes of Arab put on new clothes and decorate the cities. Still, a group of Arabs, who is known as the "Yazeedi" group celebrates this day as a joyous festival.
When the incident and anguish of Karbala took place in the year 61 Hijrah, the mode and line of tendencies, and views of Arab and the Muslims was changed. Moharram, which was taken to be as one of the (Haram) prohibited months. War and killing was prohibited in it because the martyrdom day of the best of the sons of Adam i.e. Hussain Ibn-e-Ali (A.S.) and for the Shias it became a day of sorrow and grief, the day of honoring and celebrating the memories of the martyrs.
In the very first year of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain (A.S.) his friends nearly thousands in number gathered around his grave and recited alleges. From the ushering of the era of Bani Ommayide and Yazeed unto this day, hundreds of thousands of the friends of Ahl al-bayth (A.S.) celebrate the mourning meetings and caravans move towards Karbala.
Those whose cities are away and at long distance from Karbala shape their cities as Karbala and hold mourning gatherings.
The Fatimydes of the Egypt announced the Ashoora as the day of mourning of Imam Hussain (A.S.). As such, men and women gathered around the grave of Ome Kulsum (S.A.) and mourned and recited the alleges. All along the Fatimyde Era in Egypt Ashoora remained the official and formal day of mourning and grief.
Moez ud duala Delmi ordered that Ashoora be celebrated officially in Iran and entire population and government officials must refrain from work and celebrate the mourning rituals.
This is the very reason why the mourning rituals in Iran, Egypt, Iraq and India have brought about a spiritual movement and ideological change among the Muslim masses so that today's movement of Muslims is the sequence of the same. With every passing year, it is becoming more fruit full. Hoping that a day will come when people will mend their perverse nesses and misbehaviors and make up their deficiencies and faults and enhance their strength and values.
One of the scholars says about it "Mosques are the relics and vestiges of the Prophet (P.B.U.H.) but the monasteries of mourning and Hussainias (centers of mourning) are the relics of the Ahl al-bayth (A.S.).
The Shias prattle and tell their secrets to God in the mosques and in the mourning centers they prattle to the lovers of God and those who were martyred for Him and on His way.
All along the passage of history no power could stop the movement of the Caravan of Hussain (A.S.) and history has shown that during the entire length of thirteen centuries this enthusiastic movement could not be hushed up and cooled down. For the same reason, because the martyrdom of Hussain (A.S.) and his friends took place on such a day then Joyous ceremonies and decorative measures, joyous and happy celebrations, and lightings and keeping of fast became prohibited and haram on that day.
Ibn-e-Kaseer writes, "Ashoora was announced as the public and national mourning day in Baghdad in the approximates of 400 Hijrah. People used to keep cold water and cold drinks on the highways and through fares for the thirsty ones to drink and to commemorate the thirst of Hussain (A.S.) and people of Iraq used to become mournful on the Ashoora day just like the death day of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.).
Who was the Winner of the Karbala Movement?
Although a group of simple people think that Yazeed won the Ashoora battle and Hussain (A.S.) was defeated. But by studying the history deeply and thoroughly they would appreciate that the situation was reverse and opposite of it. For, winning and succeeding does not mean that a person must remain unharmed and intact and the enemy be killed. But it means success in achieving one's objects and goals and aspirations and ideology although one is killed. Defeat does not mean being killed and loosing life in the battlefield. But it means the death and annihilation of objective, aspiration and belief.
Hussain (A.S.) himself and his friends were martyred in the Ashoora's tragic event, his family was taken prisoner, their properties were plundered and looted but the aim and objective of Hussain (A.S.) remained alive, because, his aim was the spreading and expansion of Islam and stopping the cruelty, tyranny and aggression, which has been carried forward during the entire length of history and millions of men are the holders and carriers of the flag of this belief and aspiration. Hut the aim of Yazeed was annihilated and perished; because his sole aim was not killing Hussain (A.S.) and his friends instead it was finishing Islam and the end and termination of the teachings of the Holy Prophet (P.B.U.H.) of Islam. Since Hussain (A.S.) was on that track and way, Yazeed thought by killing Hussain (A.S.) and taking his family as prisoner the story will finish and his ends will be achieved.
Not knowing and unaware of this fact that God himself is the guard and custodian of Islam and Quran and the teachings of the Prophets. The tyrants, arrogant, and powerful of the history who always stood up against the Prophets and fought them, killed them or banished them, had the same obnoxious aim but none of them succeeded neither Nomrod and Pharos nor anyone else of them. What success can be better and clearer than this that many centuries have passed and there is no name and signs of those tyrants of the history among the people. But the Prophets of God and the, religious leaders still have their places in the depth of the hearts of the informed, aware, and human loving people. People praise them regarding their greatness and they do not cherish the memories of the kings. Today we observe that the graves of religious leaders and the real movement makers of history have got devoted lovers who travel long distances after bearing the inconveniences and discomforts, to bow down to their graves and tell their secrets to them. But the graves of the tyrants of history do not have any visitors because they do not have anything to give it to anyone.
After, the catastrophe and calamity of Karbala the signs of the triumph of Hussain (A.S.) and defeat of Yazeed became evident and clear, because where ever the remaining family members of Hussain (A.S.) would set their feet people would exhibit their emotions, of love and attachment with them and curse their enemies, to such extent, that even the family members of Yazeed did not give him any respect. Instead, a few of his near relatives raised objection and rebuked, reproached and blamed him.
Brief Sayings of the Imam Hussain (A.S.)
1. Imam Hussain (A.S.) said on the day of Ashoora: "People are the servants of the World and touch the religion by their tongues. Till such time that they know that religion does not carry any harm for them, they would move and spin around it. But when the test comes then the real religious ones are (to be seen) actually very few in number."
2. Imam Hussain (A.S.) told his son Imam Zain ul Abidin: "Avoid being cruel to anybody who does not have any helper except God."
3. During fare well to his son on Ashoora day he said: "Oh my son do not weep, do not shed tears on my leaving, your distress and calamity does not come to an end. But that will be the beginning of your discomforts, agonies and grief's. Be strong, because God is your supporter. Beware, after I pass away, do not say a word before the enemy so that your worth comes down."
4. Worst of the people is the one who gives (surrenders) his dooms day for his world (material gains).
5. Do not perform any good work for the sake of people's praise and do not abandon it for fear of shame.
6. Those who worship and adore God do not worship others.
7. Whatever my brother Hassan (A.S.) did during his life was upon the command and order of God. And that which I do is also upon the order of God.
8. Do not say a word, which may make you repent and force you to make excuse.
I have always longed to photograph the Holy Ka'aba and finally did ^___^

Jubair Ibn Mut’am said that he heard Allah's Apostle saying: “I have several names: I am Muhammad and I am Ahmad, and I am Al-Mahi with whom Allah obliterates Kufr (disbelief), and I am Al-Hashir (gatherer) at whose feet (i.e. behind whom) the people will be gathered (on the Day of Resurrection), and I am Al-‘Aqib with no messenger after after him (i.e. who succeeds the other prophets in bringing about good).” [Agreed upon]
«إن لي أسماء، وأنا محمد، وأنا أحمد، وأنا الماحي الذي يمحو الله بي الكفر، وأنا الحاشر الذي يحشر الناس على قدميَّ، وأنا العاقب الذي ليس بعده أحد»متفق عليه
Abu Musa al-Ash'ari reported that Allah's Messenger, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, mentioned many names of his and said: “I am Muhammad, Ahmad, Muqaffi (the last in succession), al-Hashir, the Prophet of repentance, and the Prophet of Mercy.” [Reported by Muslim]
«وعن أبي موسى الأشعري قال: كان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم يسمي لنا نفسه أسماء فقال: أنا محمد، وأحمد، والمقفي، والحاشر، ونبي التوبة، ونبي الرحمة» رواه مسلم
The purity of the lineage of the Prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him: You must know, may Allah mercy us all, that Allah has protected the parents of our chosen Prophet (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) from committing illegal sexual intercourse. He (the Prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) had been born after sound marriage. Wathila Ibn al-Asqa' reported: I heard Allah's Messenger (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) as saying: “Verily Allah granted eminence to Kinana from amongst the descendants of Isma'il and he granted eminence to the Quraish amongst Kinana and he granted eminence to Quraish amongst Banu Hashim and he granted me eminence from the tribe of Banu Hashim.” [Reported by Muslim]
«إن الله اصطفى كنانة من ولد إسماعيل. واصطفى قريشا من كنانة. واصطفى من قريش بني هاشم. واصطفاني من بني هاشم» رواه مسلم
When Heraclius asked Abu Sufyan Ibn Harb about the status of the Prophet’s family among their respective people, Abu Sufyan said: “He belongs to a good (noble) family amongst us.” So, Heraclius said: “In fact all the Apostles come from noble families amongst their respective people.” [Reported by Al-Bukhari]
«كيف نسب هذا الرجل فيكم؟.......وكذلك الرسل تبعث في نسب قومها .....» رواه البخاري
The birth of the Prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him:
The prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him was born on Monday in the month of Rabi’ the first. It has been said that it was in the second day of the month, others said it was in the eighth day, others said it was on the tenth day, and others said it was on the twelfth day. Ibn kathir said: “The most sound opinion is that that he had been born on the year of the elephant. This had been said by Ibrahim Ibn Al-Munthir Al-Hizamy (the sheikhof Al-Bukhari) and Khalifa Ibn Khayyat and others unanimously.”
The scholars who recorded the biography of the Prophet Reported that Amina (the Prophet’s mother) said: “When I conceived him, I did not feel his weight, and when he had been delivered; he came with a light illuminating every corner between the east and the west.”
Al-‘Erbadd Ibn sariyah, may Allah be pleased with him, Reported that he heard the Prophet (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) say: “It had been written in the mother of the book that I am the seal of prophets while Adam was still in the state of clay, and I will explain it to you; I am Ibrahim’s invocation, the glad tiding of Jesus to his people, and the dream that my mother had seen in it that light had come out of her and illuminated the palaces of Ash-Sham.” [Reported by Ahmad and Authenticated by Albani]
«إنّي عند الله في أم الكتاب لخاتم النبيين، وإن آدم لمنجدلٌ في طينته، وسأنبئكم بتأويل ذلك، دعوة إبراهيم، وبشارة عيسى قومه، ورؤيا أمي التي رأت، انه خرج منها نور أضاءت له قصور الشام» أحمد و صححه الألباني
His father had died while he (the Prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) was still in the womb of his mother. Some scholars said that he died after months of the prophet’s birth and others said ‘after year.’ However, the first saying is the well-known opinion.
Breastfeeding the Prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him
The Prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him was breastfed by Thuwaiba (slave girl of Abu Lahab) for days, and then they sought for him a wet nurse from the tribe of Bani Sa’d, and Halima As-Sa’dia breastfed him. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him stayed with Halima in Bani Sa’d for about four years, after the incident where his heart taken out of his chest to cleanse is from the influence of Satan and the self, Halima returned him to his mother after that.
Then his mother had died in Al-Abwaa` during her journey to Makkah when he was six years old. When the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, passed by Al-Abwaa` in his way to Makkah in the year of the Fath (Conquer), he asked permission from his Lord to visit the grave of his mother; so, Allah permitted him and he wept till those who were surrounding him wept too, and he said: “Visit the graves because it reminds you with death.” [Reported by Muslim]
«زوروا القبور فإنّها تذكر بالموت» رواه مسلم
When his mother died Umm Ayman (a slave girl to him he had inherited from his father) cared for upbringing him under the auspices of his grandfather, Abdel-Muttalib. When the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, became eight years old his grandfather died after giving Bequest to his uncle Abu Talib to put him under his auspices. Abu Talib took care of the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, helped and supported him very well when Allah sent him as a messenger; although he (Abu Talib) continued to be a polytheist till his death! So Allah made his help to the prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, a reason for decreasing the level of his torment; according to what had been mentioned in the sound Hadeeth.
Protecting him (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) from the filth of Jahilliya by Allah
Allah Almighty had protected him since his childhood and purified him from the filth of Jahilliya and any demerit. Moreover, He granted him noble manners, till people named him ‘the honest’, because of his purity, truthfulness and honesty. When Quraish wanted to reconstruct the Ka’ba (when the prophet was thirty five years old); they disagreed about who has the right to put the black stone in its place, then they agreed to accept the judgment of the first person who would enter upon them. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, was the first person to enter upon them, so they said ‘the honest has come’ and declared their acceptance to his judgment. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, ordered for a piece of clothes to be brought; then he put the stone in the middle of it and ordered every tribe to carry one end of the piece of clothes, then he pushed the stone in its place. [Reported by Ahmad and Al-Hakem]
«فكان رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم فقالوا: جاء الأمين، فرضوا به، فأمر بثوبٍ، فوضع الحجر في وسطه، وأمر كل قبيلة أن ترفع بجانب من جوانب الثوب، ثم أخذ الحجر فوضعه موضعه» رواه أحمد والحاكم
The marriage of the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him
Khadija had married him when he was twenty five years old. This was after his going to Ash-Sham with her slave Maysara in a trade journey. Maysara saw what amazed him in the prophet, and witnessed his truthfulness and honesty. When he returned he told his owner what he had seen; so, she encouraged him to marry her.
Then Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her) died three years before the migration; he married none till her death. After the death of Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her) he married Sawda Bint Zam’aa, then he married ‘A`isha Bint Abu Bakr the truthful (may Allah be pleased with both of them); he had never married a virgin except her. Then he married Hafsa Bint Omar Ibn Al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with both of them), then Zaynab Bint Khozayma Ibn Al-Hareth (may Allah be pleased with her) and Umm Salama Hind Bint Umayya (may Allah be pleased with her) and Zaynab Bint Jahsh (may Allah be pleased with her), then he Married Juwairyah Bint Al-Hareth (may Allah be pleased with her), then Umm Habiba Bint Abu Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with her), and he married after the conquest of Khaybar Safyah Bint Hoyay Ibn Akhtab (may Allah be pleased with her), then Maymona Bint Al-Hareth (may Allah be pleased with her) who was the last one he had married.
The children of the Prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him
All his children were from Khadija Bint Khwailed except Ibrahim. Ibrahim was from the Maria from Egypt that had been a slave girl the king of Egypt sent to him as a gift.
His sons: Al-Qasim (the prophet is nicknamed by him) who lived a few days, and At-Tahir and At-Taiyb.
It has been said: “Khadija delivered Abdullah during the period of Islam, so he had been nicknamed At-Tahir and At-Taiyb. As for Ibrahim, he had been born in Al-Madina and lived 22 months and died three months before him.”
His daughters: Zaynab was the eldest; she married Abu Al-‘Aas Ibn Ar-Rabie’ (the son of her maternal aunt), and Ruqayyah; she married ‘Uthman Ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him), and Fatima; she married Ali Ibn Abu Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and delivered to him Al-Hassan and Al-Hussain the masters of paradise’s youth, and Umm Kalthoum; she married ‘Uthman Ibn Affan (may Allah be pleased with him) after the death of Ruqayyah (may Allah be pleased with them all).
An-Nawawy said: “So, the daughters are four with no disagreement. And the sons are three according to the most authentic sayings.”
Beginning of revelation: The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, had been sent with the message when he was forty years old. The angel came to him in the cave of Hira on Monday 17th Ramadan (other opinions state that it was on the night of 25th of Ramadan).
It is reported that “The angel came to him in it and asked him to read. The Prophet replied, "I do not know how to read." (The Prophet added), "The angel embraced me (forcefully) and pressed me so hard that I could not bear it anymore. He then released me and again asked me to read, and I replied, "I do not know how to read," whereupon he embraced me again and pressed me a second time till I could not bear it anymore. He then released me and asked me again to read, but again I replied, "I do not know how to read (or, what shall I read?)." Thereupon he embraced me for the third time and pressed me and then released me and said, {Read! In the Name of your Lord Who has created (all that exists). He has created man from a clot (a piece of thick coagulated blood). Read! And your Lord is the Most Generous. Who has taught (the writing) by the pen. He has taught man that which he knew not} [Al-Alaq 96:1-5]

Then Allah's Messenger returned with the Inspiration, his neck muscles twitching with terror till he entered upon Khadija and said, "Cover me! Cover me!" They covered him till his fear was over and then he said, "O Khadija, what is wrong with me?" Then he told her everything that had happened and said, 'I fear that something may happen to me." Khadija said, 'Never! But have the glad tidings, for by Allah, Allah will never disgrace you as you keep good ties of kinship, speak the truth, help the poor and the destitute, serve your guest generously and assist the deserving, calamity-afflicted ones."” [Reported by Bukhari]
“The revelation was intermitted for me for a small span of time, then while I was walking I heard a voice from the sky, and raising my head I saw the angel who had come to me in Hira', sitting on a Throne between heaven and earth I was terror-stricken on that account and came back (to his family) and said: “Wrap me up, wrap me up!” So they wrapped me up, and the Blessed and Exalted Allah sent down: {O you (Muhammad prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) enveloped in garments! Arise and warn! And magnify your Lord (Allâh)! And purify your garments!} [Al-Muddaththir 74:1-4]

Allah Almighty ordered him in these verses to warn his people. So, the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, did his best and preached all people; the old and the young, the free and the slaves, the men and the women, the white and the black. The servants of Allah, whom Allah destined their win and survival in this worldly life and in the hereafter too, had followed him from everywhere. They converted to Islam, and the ignorant people of Makka punished and harmed them constantly. Allah has protected his messenger by his uncle Abu Talib who was noble, honorable and well obeyed among his people; they could not befall him by hurting his nephew after knowing how much he likes him.
Ibn Al-Jawzy said: “He used to secretly preach people to Islam for three years, then Allah revealed upon him {Therefore proclaim openly (Allâh’s Message - Islâmic Monotheism) that which you are commanded} [Al-Hijr 15:94]
{فاصْدَعْ بِمَا تُؤْمَر} سورة الحجر: 94
Transliteration: FaisdaAA bima tumaru
So he preached them openly. When Allah revealed: {And warn your tribe (O Muhammad prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) of near kindred} [Ash-Shuara 26:214]
{وَأَنذِرْ عَشِيرَتَكَ الأَقْرَبِينَ} سورة الشعراء: 214

Allâh’s Messenger (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) went out, and when he had ascended As-Safa Mountain, he shouted, "Yâ Sabâhâh! (An Arabic expression used when one appeals for help or draws the attention of others to some danger)” The people said, “Who is that?” Then they gathered around him, whereupon he said, “Do you see? If I inform you that cavalrymen are proceeding up the side of this mountain to attack you, will you believe me?” They said, “We have never heard you telling a lie.” Then he said, “I am a plain warner to you of a coming severe punishment.” Abû Lahab said: “May you perish! You gathered us only for this reason?” Then Abû Lahab went away. So Sûrat Al-Masad {Perish the hands of Abû Lahab!} (Al-Masad: 1) was revealed. [Agreed upon]
His patience during suffering
The prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, faced the torment of his people by patience and seeking the reward from Allah. Then he ordered his companions to get out to the land of Ethiopia to get rid of the injustice and mistreatment; so, they went out.
Ibn Ishaq said: “When Abu Talib died, Quraish did to the prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, what it could not do during the life of Abu Talib.”
It is Reported in the two Sahihs that while the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him was praying close to remains of slaughtered camel. ‘Uqba Ibn Abu Mu'ayt took the remains of the slaughtered camel and threw it over the back of the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him. The prophet continued his Sujoud (prostration) till Fatima came and took it from his back, and then he said: “O Allah, punish the people of Quraish.” [Reported by Bukhari]
«بينا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم ساجد، وحوله ناس من قريش من المشركين، إذ جاء عقبة بن أبي معيط بسلى جزور، فقذفه على ظهر النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، فلم يرفع رأسه حتى جاءت فاطمة عليها السلام، فأخذت من ظهره، ودعت على من صنع ذلك، فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: (اللهم عليك الملأ من قريش)...» رواه البخاري
Al-Bukhari Reported that while Allah's Apostle was praying in the courtyard of the ka'ba, 'Uqba Ibn Abu Mu'ait came and seized Allah's Messenger by the shoulder and twisted his garment round his neck and throttled him severely. Abu Bakr came and seized 'Uqba's shoulder and threw him away from Allah's Apostle and said, “Would you kill a man because he says: 'My Lord is Allah?'” [Reported by Bukhari]
«بينا النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يصلي في حجر الكعبة، إذ أقبل عقبة بن ابي معيط، فوضع ثوبه في عنقه، فخنقه خنقا شديدا، فأقبل أبو بكر حتى أخذ بمنكبه، ودفعه عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال: {أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَن يَقُولَ رَبِّيَ اللَّـهُ}. الآية.» رواه البخاري
His kindness toward his people
When the torment became severe after the death of Abu Talib and Khadija (may Allah be pleased with her); the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, went to At-Ta`ef and called the tribes of Thaqeef to accept Islam, but he received nothing but mocking and harm; moreover, they threw stones over him till his heels started to bleed. Therefore he decided to go back to Makkah. The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him said: “I departed, overwhelmed with excessive sorrow, and proceeded on, and could not relax till I found myself at Qarn ath-Tha’alib where I lifted my head towards the sky to see a cloud shading me unexpectedly. I looked up and saw Jibreel in it. He called me saying, Allah has heard your people's saying to you, and what they have replied back to you, Allah has sent the Angel of the Mountains to you so that you may order him to do whatever you wish to these people.' The Angel of the Mountains called and greeted me, and then said, "O Muhammad! Order what you wish. If you like, I will close Al-Akh-Shabain (i.e. two mountains) on them." The Prophet said, "No but I hope that Allah will beget children from them who will worship Allah Alone, and will worship none besides Him.” [Agreed upon]
The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him used to go out every season of Hajj to offer himself to the tribes and say: “Who could take me with him to his people, Quraish had prevented me from conveying the message of my Lord!” [Reported by Abu-Dawoud and authenticated by Albani]
«كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يعرض نفسه بالموقف فقال ألا رجل يحملني إلى قومه، فإن قريشا قد منعوني أن أبلغ كلام ربي» راه أبو داود وصححه الألباني
Then the prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him met six men, during the season of Hajj, in Al-‘Aqaba and called them to Islam. They accepted it; then they returned to Al-Madina and called their people to Islam and many of them accepted it. Then the first and second homage had been done in Al-‘Aqaba secretly. Then the Prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him ordered his followers to migrate to Al-Madina; so they migrated to it in huge numbers.
Migration to Al-Medina
Then the Prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him had gone out with Abu Bakr to Al-Madina. First, they went to the cave of Thawr and stayed there for three days while the people of Quraish were doing their best to find them. Eventually, he arrived to Al-Madina and its people welcomed him and he built his Masjid and house within it.
His forays: Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased) with him said: “When the prophet prayers and peace of Allah be upon him left Makka, Abu Bakr said ‘They forced their prophet out! To Allah we belong and to Him we will return! They will be perished!’ So Allah revealed {Permission to fight (against disbelievers) is given to those (believers) who are fought against, because they have been wronged} [Al-Hajj 22:39],
{أُذِنَ لِلَّذِينَ يُقَاتَلُونَ بِأَنَّهُمْ ظُلِمُوا} سورة الحج: 39

Transliteration: Wainnaka laAAala khuluqin AAatheemin
He was the most courageous person, the chastest, the most modest and the shyest (he was shyer than a virgin girl). He used to accept the gift and reward for it; on the other hand, he had never accepted taking charity. He had never become angry for himself; rather he used to be angry for the sake of his Lord only. He used to eat whatever is presented to him. And he had neither eaten while lying down, nor had he eaten on a table. Sometimes three months would pass without having anything to cook. And he used to sit with the poor and needy people, visits the sick and companies the funerals till burial.
He used to joke but says only the truth, and laugh but without giggling. And he used to serve his family, and said: “The best of you are those who are best toward their families, and I am the best one (among you) toward my family.” [Reported by At-Tirmthi and authenticated by Al-Albani]
«خيركم خيركم لأهله وأنا خيركم لأهلي» الترمذي وصححه الألباني
Anas, may Allah be pleased with him, said: “I served the Prophet (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him) for ten years, and he had never said why did you do that? Or why did not you do that?”
He used to be kind with people and show the miracles to them; so, the moon had been split in two halves to him, the water flowed from the spaces between his fingers, the trunk yearned to him, the camel complained for him, and he told them things to happen in the future and it came true.

He did not care for this worldly life although he was the best the living and the dead. All praise is due to Allah for being in his Ummah (nation). May Allah help us to obey Him, and gather us on the Day of resurrection as believers who believe in the Quran and the Sunnah. Ameen.

- The Eleventh year: The death of the Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, on Monday Rabee’ the first (there are some disagreement about the exact day of death during this month). The Prophet, prayers and peace of Allah be upon him, died when he was sixty three years old; forty before being prophet, and twenty three years as a prophet and messenger. He spent thirteen years of them in Makka, and ten in Al-Medina. Prayers and peace of Allah be upon him and upon his family and company.
Finally, prayers be upon the most generous prophet, Muhammad Ibn Abdullah (prayers and peace of Allah be upon him). And I declare that everything right I had written is from Allah Almighty, and that everything wrong I had written is from me and Satan.

The Speech of Hazrat Maulana Noor Muhammad Sahib
Dated: Friday, 4th February 2005
Topic No1: Earning with one’s own hand is the best worship
Prelude:
Respected fellows!
It is the 12th month of Islamic calendar. In this month a great person i-e Hazrat Ibrahim (Peace Be Upon Him) who offered great sacrifices and performed excellent job in the way of getting consent of Allah Subhanahu Ta’llah and for the good of humanity as well as for their success in both the worlds (here and after the death), were so liked by Allah Subhanahu that not only (Allah) mentioned it in the Holy Quran but also directed followers of Islam in clear words that following the footsteps of that great messenger of Allah in every walk of life is required of them.
Allah Subhanahu Ta’llah says in the holy Quran:
Verse:
Translation:
It means to follow the way chosen by Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) for successfulness in both religious and worldly affairs. So whatever Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) did in his life or prayed Allah to grant him, one should do the same and pray from (The Provider) because it is the one and the only way that leads to success.
Every just person and believer in the oneness of Allah, whenever cast a look upon the life of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) in the light of Quran, (his heart) will give the verdict that verily the way of success in both the religious and worldly affairs lie in what the great messenger of Allah chosen for himself as well as for his brood (the coming generations).
Allah Subhanahu Ta’llah says in the holy Quran:
Verse:
Translation:
(2)
The greatness of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) can be judged from the fact that Jews said (today) that they are on the right path because they are following into his (Hazrat Ibrahim) foot Steps. And for showing their righteousness followers of Christianity also claimed the same. As far as claim of Islam is concerned in this regard; it is the religion of the followers of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) because the holy Quran (announces) the same, saying:
Verse:
Translation:
It is also to make a point here that the Islamic religion claimed so because the prophet Hazrat Muhammad (SAW) was sent by Allah due to the prayings of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH).
Again if we think over it that whatever action and deeds Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) performed, day-out and day-in, in Makkah Mu’azzima, is ranked high worship in Islam.
I have told it during my sermon in the preceding Friday that Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) prayed from Allah, even before praying for a guider and a book of guidance, saying, O, my Allah! Make this city a dwelt of peace. It clearly shows that Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) was seeking a life full of love and respect for the coming generations of (his), where there would be peace and tranquility. And where there people will mitigate sufferings of one another and no body will be a victim of cruelty of others.
Now the point which we take is that if there is a rift among people in the cities, villages, or among nationalities and tribes of Muslims and they become hard enemy of one another and engulfed by unknown fear just because of the acts of some people who also claim to be the followers of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH), (than we should ask ourselves), is this the way of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH)? And can we call such kind of actions, did by some people which create rifts, is teachings of prophet Muhammad (SAW)? No, not at all, but contrary to all this, such kind of actions has not even a slightest relationship with Islam.
So it is clear that the true religion is solely the one which while following could help establish peace, the peace which was prayed by Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH). But effective peace can be established only when it is prevail in a large region. For this purpose it is necessary that continued efforts should be made so that peace may be established at villages. Islam is the supporter of such philosophy for bringing peace and while making Hajj (pilgrimage) obligatory it has an aim that every Muslim may take a message of peace from these sacred places which area visited by pilgrim during Hajj and then strive for spreading it in their respective areas. Every pilgrim is witness to the fact that let aside
(3)
human beings; there is even peace for animals and trees there (in Makkah). But those animals posing danger to human beings are excluded from that category. It teaches us the lesson that people creating lawlessness are not extended shelter of peace by Allah. So if someone remains deprive of getting peace in Makkah (the oldest center of peace) even, than there can not be the question that there could be peace available somewhere else for him.
By this, I want to tell (you) that there is a big lesson for the ‘Ummat-i-Muhammadi’ (followers of teachings of prophet Muhammad (SAW) in the prayers of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) and by acting upon these Muslims can, even today, come out of difficult times which they are confronted with.
We ought to know that all the actions and deeds performed by Hazrat Ibrahim and Hazrat Bibi Hajira (PBUH) during their life time were in fact meant to present an example for us and it was aiming that Muslims should follow suit. But it is unfortunate for the Muslim Umma that (today) we have forget the real spirit behind these teachings and we only present some of the acts done by Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) in the garb of worship and superficially act upon them. Every year hundreds of thousands of people perform ‘Hajj’ (pilgrimage) but it is difficult to know as to how much people perform this religious obligation in the spirit of the real philosophy behind it. (I) meant to say that though we perform Hajj but do not turn our eyes to the real philosophy reside behind it; on the contrary (we) have overlooked some parts of ‘Ibrahimi’ manifesto and by ignoring it the ‘Umma’ (Nation) is mistaken that the negative effect of such negligence will not happened.
Protecting forests is one of the vital Sunnah (way) of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) but the Umma has done havoc with forests just for their little benefit. Particularly, people from Waziristan are jointly responsible for acts of crime (to cut jungles) and the mountains which were once full of forests give today a look of barren hills of Baluchistan. The area (Waziristan) where once happened to be variety of beautiful birds is totally void of it and their sweet twitters is no more heard off today.
I have mentioned before that following by Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH), the last prophet Muhammad (SAW) prayed Allah Subhanahu Ta’llah in Madina Munawara pertaining to the meaning that, O, Allah! Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH) was a messenger and endear to (Allah) and he prayed regarding Makka Mua’zzima that there may be peace to every thing, (there may not be permission of cutting trees or hunting animals); similarly O, Allah! (I) pray for Madina Munawara that in its limits (12 square kilometers of area) there may not be permission of either cutting trees or hunting animals.
(4)
The punishment for those (both in this world and the world to come) he who cut trees:
Hazrat Sa’ad (RA) the great ‘Suhabi’ (companion) of prophet Muhammad (SAW), one day saw some slaves cutting woods in the jungle in Madina Munawara. He come up there and took possession of ropes, axes and extra clothes of these slaves. Upon this the slaves fetched their master, who demanded of Sa’ad to return the things he has taken possession off. Sa’ad replied that there could be no question of returning these things because prophet Muhammad (SAW) has announced it that the things taken in custody from anyone found to be cutting trees in this jungle, will belong to the person who get (control of) his things. And said (to the master) if you insist than I can pay the price (of these things) only (but can not return them).
There is a tradition (associated) from prophet Muhammad (SAW) that he who cut a tree of berry which has grown up naturally, would be thrown into the hell upside down.
Yes, there is no sin or anything bad in cutting wild trees provided if a person wants to replace it by some precious or trees bearing fruits to grow there. But here we will have to lament that to leave aside common wild trees, they (Ahmadzai tribes in Waziristan) when fall in enmity with one another cut down, even, those trees bearing fruits. And at times (some of them) come up complaining saying that someone has destroyed their orchard by cutting its trees in the darkness of the night and (they) request (me) to pray that curse may fall upon such people. It is painful for a person to mention some talks. O, Oppressors! Don’t you think that angels will not give their witness against such criminals in the court of Allah Subhanahu Ta’llah; who is involved in cutting down orchards cultivated by other human beings or those natural jungles nurtured by Allah himself just for the sake of their extravagancy or sustaining their parasitic habits. And there is no need to curse such people because angels of Allah curse them all the time.
It may happen that a need arise sometimes to cut some trees due to bare necessity and there remain no alternate to do this, but there are also certain people of parasitic nature whose sole sustaining depends on only cutting orchards of Allah Subhanahu Ta’llah. Is that the religion of Hazrat Ibrahim (PBUH)? Is Islam teaches us all this?
Abode of Satan (Ablees):
It occurs in various traditions that the Satan (Ablees) had a bosom friend who always remain busy in doing satanic acts. Once he asked the Satan to tell him about his resident so that he may meet him in times of necessity. But the Satan was applying various delaying tactics not to tell about his resident while on the other hand his friend also continued insisting upon it. At last being compelled the Satan told that he resides in an
(5)
idle mind of person. It was to tell that any person who remain idle, his mind and heart is captured by Satan through various apprehensions and that very person then become right hand of Satan to spread evils and tumult among masses.
By mentioning the episode I want to tell you people that on one hand Satan abode in an idle mind while on the other hand about 70 percent of our population is idle and unemployed. It is because that more than half of the populations that comprise women are void of education. After performing their small domestic works at morning and evening times mostly they (women) remain idle and resultantly become causative in spreading tumult in houses in one or the other shape. As there is joint family system prevailed in tribal areas that is why there often occurs bad feelings in houses and as there is also the chance of presence of such person who are an apron string of their wives, they part ways with their brothers in sheer malice created by flattery of their wives and resultantly the passion of love and sympathy found in a family evaporates and scatter the whole system. On the other hand males thronging vehicles early in the morning give a sense to any body as if it was their time of work starting in industries shift hours or at offices but it is not the case. Right at the dawn hotels in Rustam Bazaar that serve tea become overcrowded with people and from morning till evening cups of tea are served before people which are repeatedly cleansed through the same water that remained in a tub for the whole day thus become agent of spreading communicable diseases among the people. People set in one after another shops there and expectedly find chance for lying, blaming and back biting others. And in this way about the 60 percent people in this Bazaar after spending Rs 100 at average per head took to their homes at the time of dusk. I can say it with surety that if any body from a developed country or even a businessman from Lahore happened to see the hustle and bustle in Rustam Bazaar at about 10 AM, he will think with himself that it is some special occasion that such a large number of people are gathering though they do not seem engaged in any apparent work to do here.
Now you (people) can better tell whether a Satan will not abode in the hearts and minds of people of an area whose large section of population particularly their youths remain idle and thoroughly unemployed. While lying in his bed, have anyone ever pondered over it that how did he spent his precious 10-12 hours (today)? How much work he did today that may benefit him either worldly or religiously? Has anyone ever think over it that how much embarrassment he caused by sustaining loss to himself or to others or evaluate it as to how much prayers he earned for being beneficial to others (today)?
Comparison between a person who earn lawfully and a person who eat from the earnings of others while setting himself idle (parasitical):
(6)
Hazrat Abu Qalaba (RA) said that once a time some ‘Suhabah-i-Karam’ (companions of prophet Muhammad (SAW), went on a journey and upon returning when they went to see prophet Muhammad (SAW) and be-praised one of their fellows in front of the prophet,
( ) “They mentioned one of their fellows”, ( ),
“Saying they had never seen such a person like him”, ( ), “he used to busy all the time in reciting Quran during the journey”, ( ), “and wherever we stayed, he (the fellow) at once started offering ‘Nafal’ prayers”. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) ascertained (from them), ( ), “who managed for the fodder of his camel and conveyance etc.?” Suhabah Karam replied, ( ), “we used to do this (for him)”, Prophet Muhammad (SAW) said, ( ), “in the court of Allah Ta’llah, you all are much better than him”.
Now it is the point to think upon that a person always remain busy in ‘Nafal’ prayers and the others spare themselves for serving human beings and the prophet of Islam give preference to the latter over the former. How much revolutionary message is present in these words of prophet Muhammad (SAW) for the ‘Umma’!
It is the tragedy with Muslims today that like the previous ‘Ummat’ (nations) they have also shut their eyes to the real teachings of their religion and the acts which are of secondary nature are given preference over what to be prioritized. This only episode, we mentioned above, is sufficient for making us understanding the spirit of Islam and it tells that Islam never encourage parasitic habits (to set idle and eat what is earned by others) if why not it may be done on the name of worship even. And the same is also true for ‘Ulema’ (religious scholars) as today’s ‘Ulema’ is making it home to the people, if not vocally than through their acts, manifesting that they are serving the religion of Islam and that is why arranging necessities of life for them is obligatory on the people.
I want to ask as to what kind of service is rendered to the religion, at the expense of which they (Ulema) demand free of cost bread. And how much, we (Ulema) strive in presenting solution to the issues faced by people in their religious and worldly affairs that we may demand free privileges from them. How much efforts we made with seriousness of purpose to solve the matters the area is confronted with today.
In the ‘Ahya Ul Ulum’ (a name of book) there is an episode, ( ), “Upon seeing a person Hazrat Esa (PBUH) discovered from him as to what is (your) activities brother? He replied, that (i) do worship only, (i-e have recoiled from other worldly affairs). Esa (PBUH) said that than your brother is more worshiper than you”. He (Esa- PBUH) called the brother of that person more worshiper because due to the hard
(7)
work and labor of his brother due to which the person (who was asked by Esa- PBUH) was availing time for worshiping and was not facing any worldly embarrassment during his worship.
Some people consider offering prayers is the only beneficial act, ok it is worship and one must offer it but there are other qualities in human beings as well and by offering ‘Nafal’ prayers a person may reform oneself only but by striving in doing action while keeping in view needs of the time can reform the whole locality. So of what benefit it is that one may engage in self reform and forget about reformation of the society as a whole and think with himself that I have nothing to do with society. Do we think that by such thinking and action we will ever become successful people? No not at all, we all are voyagers of the same boat and will sink and swim together. For ‘safe voyage’ we all will have to work jointly. If a person has high qualities in his character but he remain contented over doing small and pity works than it is tantamount to waste ones abilities.
Respected fellows! ‘Nafal’ prayers are even offered by aged woman but there is a difference of heaven between old woman and a man of abilities. The real thing is that a person may become a source of peace, tranquility and beneficial for his family, kinship, and tribe and for the general masses as well according to the needs of the time if he may have to toil extensively while doing this.
Quran guides its followers in every sphere of life. Take a view of the episode of Bibi Mariam and Hazrat Esa (PBUH) and it also give a lesson of toleration in labor and hard work according to ones powers. The time of birth of Esa (PBUH) is ripe and it was to happened through a miracle. There is nobody to look after the blessed woman (Bibi Mariam) of an honorable family and on one hand she feared taunting of the people and on the other hand suffers from pangs of bearing a child. It is a difficult situation to face with. In apparent drive to get hide from the eyes of the people, she (Bibi Mariam) leave for a desolate place wherein she give birth to a child. It is clear to every one that in such conditions woman needs some sweets and quickly digested food, so that the body may get required energy promptly. There is a tree of dates near the place of birth (of Hazrat Esa-PBUH) but it is not the season of dates (fruit) and despite the critical conditions and difficulties there arise a voice from invisible that there will be arrangements for foods as per requirements but for that (Bibi Mariam) has also to do a part of her work. That is why it was said,
Verse: ( )
Translation: ( )
(8)
The sayings of Allah proved and on shaking the tree, dates began dropping though it was not the season of that fruit. Allah Subhanahu Ta’allah could provide her (Bibi Mariam) fresh dates without shaking the tree but it was the part of schemes of things of Allah that there should be a bit part to play by Bibi Mariam in this regard as well. The same tradition of giving such kind of food to an infant after birth still persists in backward areas of tribal societies of Pashtuns and a kind of pudding is prepared which is both sweet and quickly digestible as well and it is locally called ‘Ghrubai’ which suffice the need of poor people on such occasions.
To rectify a misconception:
By mentioning the episode from the Holy Quran I have an aim to explain that some people who want to avoid any working or labor say occasionally that livelihood is already decided from heavens than there is no need of taking pains for it.
Listen carefully! These are the talks uttered by parasitic people and who told it to you (people) that livelihood is provided through such a way from heavens that one will not have to either work or labor.
No not at all, it is not the case but according to the laws of creator of universe a human being will have to toil and work than he will be able to find respectable livelihood that brings solace.
Allah Subhanahu Ta’llah says in the holy Quran:
Verse: ( )
Translation: ( )
And there is a ‘Hadis-i-Qudsee’ (such saying of prophet Muhammad (SAW) the words of which are from the side of Allah) mentioned in ‘Mabsut-i-Sarhasi’ (the name of book), saying,
(9)
( )
Translation: ( )
It means that there will be augmentation for him in his livelihood or Allah Subhanahu Ta’llah will awarded large profit, beyond expectation, even in a meager labor somebody does. Yes it should be kept in mind that Islam has mentioned the virtues of legally earned livelihood and we are also talking here in this context. Deceitfulness, adulteration and weighing less are one of the worst kinds of sin in Islam and earning through such way can never give satisfaction to anybody. Person earning through such ways will always remain in anxiety and the ominous effects of the same will also cast its shadow on the offspring and the coming generation of such a person. By ignoring teachings of holy Quran Muslims have, today, forgotten the Day of Judgment and that is why they are earning through these wrong ways without considering it either against morality or contrary to the religious teachings. Resultantly they follow neither religion (in its true sense) nor their worldly affairs.
What are the teachings of our holy prophet Muhammad (SAW) regarding livelihood can be judged from the single episode here. Once a poor person came to see the prophet Muhammad (SAW) and solicits that he may be helped as he has nothing (livelihood) with himself. The prophet of Islam asked him as there is anything available in his home? The person replied, that there is a large bowl which is used by both of us (husband and wife) for drinking purposes and making ablution with the help of that and also take bath with it and added that there is also a thick blanket in the home which is used for sleeping purposes at the night time. The prophet Muhammad (SAW) said to him to go and fetch both the things, which he brought. Then the prophet of Islam announced in a gathering of ‘Ashaab’ (companions of prophet Muhammad (SAW), is there any buyer of (these) things? The prophet did not asked the person as to whether he is willing to sell these things or not, because from the point of view of ‘Shariah’ (Islamic law) the ‘Qazi’ (Judge) has the authority to do like this. One of the ‘Suhabi’ replied to the announcement that he want to pay one Dirham for it. The prophet asked again as any body want to buy these things with high price than that? Another ‘Suhabi’ replied, O, prophet of Allah! I am paying two Dirhams for it and the prophet handed over both the things to that ‘Suhabi’ while give away the two Dirhams to the (soliciting) person. After that the prophet Muhammad (SAW) asked the person to procure flour for his household with one of the Dirham and to buy an axe with the second one (Dirham) and should come back then to see the prophet. The person came back after buying an axe and the prophet Muhammad (SAW) put a handle in the axe with his own blessed hands and tell the person to go to jungle daily and to sell the woods in bazaar that he cut down from there
(10)
and remember that I (the prophet) should not see you for a time frame of fifteen days to come.
After the lapse of fifteen days when the person came back, he was wearing new clothes. Prophet Muhammad (SAW) enquired about him and he said that he has bought new clothes for himself and also managed flour etc. for the household as well as having cash money with him. The prophet Muhammad (SAW) asked him to tell as to whether (his) current condition was a better one or the (previous) condition of begging was good in which if he died (while continue begging) he will have to resurrect from his grave in a condition that there could not be seen any flesh on his face on the doomsday
It is mentioned in sayings of prophet Muhammad (SAW) that he who begs would not have flesh on his face on the doomsday but will have only face skeleton, which if we see even today in a graveyard will make us frightened. The faces such people will be made frightening as a punishment for begging.
The fate of parasitical honey bees in their hives:
Most of the people have seen hives of honey bees and if someone has examined keenly, he would have found dead honey bees lying beneath the hive. The fact of the matter is that those male bees in the honey hive are parasitical and rearing is their sole work to do as honey is prepared by female bees only. After mating with the queen bee, the work of those of male bees comes to an end. That is why female bees kill them after fighting with them as they (male bees) then become parasitical and have no role to play afterwards and there remain no place for them in the hives of honey bees, who are known for their hard labor.
Also from the Islamic point of view a parasitical man is a worst person and parasitic habit is a big sin. The reason lies in the fact that the heart and mind of an idle person becomes abode of Satan and he whose heart and mind is taken possession of by Satan and its too expecting anything good from him is nothing short of a big mistake.
Some of the people maintain saying that they have become aged and starts recoiling work. I want to ask as in the religion of Allah, old age can be presented as an excuse for exonerating oneself from any obligation? Is keep fasting and offering obligatory prayers are forgiven in old age? According to ones power, these worships are obligatory by every mean. Regarding worldly affairs of ours there is also a big lesson in these directives for us. It is understandable that in old age activities can not be carried out with that much vigor like the one done in youthfulness but keeping the needs of the time in this stage of the life and then isolating oneself from worldly affairs is against Islamic teachings. A friend told (me) that an award is given every year (in some foreign country) to a person
(11)
who has done something precious for the benefit of humanity and he also informed me that an African woman was given that award last year as she had cultivated three lac trees in her whole life so far. It is not because she cultivated it for her benefit, the inclination which is found over here as we work for ones own benefit only and to work for the benefit of humanity is something contrary to our mentality.
With surety, I can say it that if an announcement is made ever pertaining to the effect that if people in their collective capacity were found having done something injurious to the humanity than they would be awarded such and such punishment, that punishment would meted out to Ahmadzai Wazir tribe. Because if there happened a forest, we destroyed it, if there is presence of variety of beautiful birds in the area, we dispelled them, trees bearing fruits are cut down by us, we set fire to hay piles, to suppress the weaker and raising issues and fighting with one another is our way of life. Now tell (me) as to what we have done so far, for the goodness of humanity as well as in the good interest of the area.
For Allah sake! Honor your precious time. These rains which pours down in set timings, tell us to arise and make the barren mountains green once again by cultivating trees on it as we have made them so by cutting trees on it. They need no care from us as nature managed water for these (trees). Alas! Thousands of olive trees have naturally grown up in the mountains of our area but it is we who do not take any benefit from it by patching them. Have you (people) ever inquired as to what kind of used is made of olive fruit today and I am sure that if we began taking advantage from these olive trees, it will accrue millions of rupees to us and thus suffice the needs of every person over here.
Cultivating useless trees is unwise act to do:
There has been a tendency prevailed in Waziristan from quite sometime to cultivate popular trees in this fertile land. Though scientifically it has been proved now, that a poplar tree sucks about 60 liters (comprising 15 gallons) of water daily through its roots and puff out it into the air through its leaves. It roots also goes down as much as 45 feet deep into the earth to suck water. It is not bad if the tree is cultivated in disserts as it can help maintain the weather moderate in such areas but in our areas there are natural forests for this purpose and so do not waste the precious trees by cultivating poplar tree over here. Do cultivate such trees in your lands and hilly areas that may either bear fruits or having precious wood.
Appeal from the government:
I want to make an appeal to the government that if there can be music programs broadcasted from Wana Radio Station, than there should be a program broadcasted on
(12)
weekly basis that may help the people of the area telling as to how to safeguard their crops and orchards from the attacks of various diseases and people may take benefit of the counsel of agricultural experts been called there. It is lamentable and pitiable that the area like Wana (Waziristan) which is famous for its fruits across the country is void of having any agricultural research laboratory up to this date. Crops and orchards are attacked by various diseases over here but there is no investigating facility to get at the root causes of all this. And the like having no proper know-how some times the spray made on fields and trees resulted in incurring losses instead of any benefit. Anyhow, keeping in view the onset of the season, (I) presented these few suggestions over here.
May Allah Subhanahu Ta’llah give us the strength to act rightly! (May it be so).
Ends…

Eid al-Adha (Arabic: عيد الأضحى ‘Īdu l-’Aḍḥā) or "Eid-u'z-Zuha" "Festival of Sacrifice" or "Greater Eid" is an important religious holiday celebrated by Muslims worldwide to commemorate the willingness of Abraham (Ibrahim) to sacrifice his son Ishmael (Isma'il) as an act of obedience to God, before God intervened to provide him with a ram to sacrifice instead.[1] The meat is divided into three equal parts to be distributed to others. The family retains one third of the share, another third is given to relatives, friends and neighbors, and the other third is given to the poor & needy.
Eid al-Adha is the latter of two Eid festivals celebrated by Muslims, whose basis comes from Sura 2 (Al-Baqara) ayah 196 in the Qur'an.[2] Like Eid ul-Fitr, Eid al-Adha begins with a Wajib prayer of two Raka'ah followed by a sermon (khuṭbah).
The word "Eid" appears in Sura al-Mai'da ("The Table Spread," Chapter 5) of the Qur'an, meaning 'solemn festival'.[3]
Eid al-Adha is celebrated annually on the 10th day of the 12th and the last Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah (ذو الحجة) of the lunar Islamic calendar.[4] Eid al-Adha celebrations start after the Hajj, the annual pilgrimage to Mecca in Saudi Arabia by Muslims worldwide, descend from Mount Arafat. The date is approximately 70 days (2 Months & 10 days) after the end of the month of Ramadan, i.e. Eid-ul-Fitr. Ritual observance of the holiday lasts until sunset of the 13th day of Dhu al-Hijjah.[5]
The Arabic term "Festival of Sacrifice", ‘Eid ul-’Aḍḥā, was borrowed as a unit from Semitic roots that evolved into Indic languages such as Hindi, Urdu, Gujarati and Bengali and Austronesian languages such as Malay and Indonesian.
Another Semitic word for "sacrifice" is the Arabic Qurbān (Arabic: قربان), which is used in Dari Persian - Afghanistan and Iranian dialect of Persian as Eyde Ghorbân عید قربان, and in Tajik Persian as Иди Қурбон (Idi Qurbon), into Kazakh as Құрбан айт (Qurban ayt), into Uyghur as Qurban Heyit, and also into various Indic languages. Other languages combined the Arabic word qurbān with local terms for "festival", as in Kurdish (Cejna Qurbanê[6]), Pashto (Kurbaneyy Akhtar), Chinese (古尔邦节 Gúěrbāng Jié), Malay and Indonesian (Hari Raya Korban, Qurbani), and Turkish (Kurban Bayramı). The Turkish term was later used in other languages such as Azeri (Qurban Bayramı), Tatar (Qorban Bäyräme), Bosnian and Croatian (Kurban-bajram), Serbian (Курбан бајрам), Russian (Курбан байрам).
Another Arabic name, ‘Īd ul-Kabīr (عيد الكبير `Īd al-Kabīr), meaning "Greater Eid/Festival" (the "Lesser Eid" being Eid ul-Fitr[7]), is used in Yemen, Syria, and North Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt). The term was borrowed directly into French as Aïd el-Kebir. Translations of "Big Eid" or "Greater Eid" are used in Pashto لوی اختر Loy Akhtar, Kashmiri Baed Eid, Hindi and Urdu Baṛā Īd, Malayalam Bali Perunnal, and Tamil Peru Nāl.
Another name refers to the fact that the holiday occurs after the culmination of the Hajj (حج), or pilgrimage to Mecca (Makka). Such names are used in Malay and Indonesian (Hari Raya Haji "Hajj celebration day", Lebaran Haji), and in Tamil Hajji Peru Nāl.
In Urdu-speaking areas, the festival is also called بقرعید Baqra Īd or Baqrī Īd, stemming either from the Arabic baqarah "heifer" or the Urdu word baqrī for "goat", as cows and goats are among the traditionally sacrificed animals. That term was also borrowed into other languages, such as Tamil Bakr Eid Peru Nāl.
Other local names include 宰牲节 Zǎishēng Jié ("Slaughter-livestock Festival") in Chinese, Tfaska Tamoqqart in the Berber language of Djerba, Tabaski or Tobaski in West African languages,[8]Babbar Sallah in Nigerian languages, and ciida gawraca in Somali.
Eid-al-Adha has other popular names across the Muslim world. The name is often simply translated into the local language, such as English Festival of Sacrifice, German Opferfest, Dutch Offerfeest, Romanian Sărbătoarea Sacrificiului and Hungarian Áldozati ünnep.
[edit] Background
According to Muslims, approximately four thousand years ago, the valley of Mecca (in what is now Saudi Arabia) was a dry, rocky and uninhabited place. According to Islam, the Prophet Abraham ('Ibraheem in Arabic) was instructed to bring his Egyptian wife Hagar (Hāǧar) and Ishmael, his only child at the time (Ismā'īl), to Arabia from the land of Canaan (currently Palestine and also parts of Lebanon,Jordan,Syria and Sinai) by God's command.
As Abraham was ready to return to Canaan, Hagar asked him, "Did "Allah" (God) order you to leave us here"? When Abraham replied: "Yes, I was directed by Allah" (God), Hagar said, "then Allah will not forget us; you can go". Although Abraham had left a large quantity of food and water with Hagar and Ishmael, the supplies quickly ran out, and within a few days the two began to feel the pangs of hunger and dehydration.
According to Islamic tradition, Hagar ran up and down between two hills called Al-Safa and Al-Marwah seven times, in her desperate quest for water. Finally, she collapsed beside her baby Ishmael and prayed to God for deliverance. Miraculously, a spring of water gushed forth from the earth at the feet of baby Ishmael. Other accounts have the angel Gabriel (Jibril) striking the earth and causing the spring to flow in abundance. With this secure water supply, known as the Zamzam Well, they were not only able to provide for their own needs, but were also able to trade water with passing nomads for food and supplies.
Years later, Abraham was instructed by God to return from Palestine to build a place of worship dedicated to Him adjacent to Hagar's well (the Zamzam Well). Abraham and Ishmael constructed a stone and mortar structure —known as the Kaaba— which was to be the gathering place for all who wished to strengthen their faith in God. As the years passed, Ishmael was blessed with Prophethood (Nubuwwah) and gave the nomads of the desert his message of submission to God. After many centuries, Mecca became a thriving desert city and a major center for trade, thanks to its reliable water source, the well of Zamzam.
One of the main trials of Abraham's life was to face the command of God to devote his dearest possession, his only son. Upon hearing this command, he prepared to submit to God's will. During this preparation, Satan (Shaitan) tempted Abraham and his family by trying to dissuade them from carrying out God's commandment, and Ibrahim and Ishmael drove Satan away by throwing pebbles at him. In commemoration of their rejection of Satan, stones are thrown during Hajj.
When Ishmael was about 13 (Ibrahim being 99), Allah (God) decided to test their faith in and submission to Allah in public. Both father and son were put through the most difficult test of their love for Allah. Abraham had a recurring dream, in which God was commanding him to offer his son as a sacrifice – an unimaginable act – sacrificing his son, which God had granted him after many years of deep prayer, the one who had been the centre of his affection and love for all these years. Abraham knew that the dreams of the prophets were inspired by Allah, and one of the ways in which God communicated with his prophets. This must be what Allah had wanted him to do. When the intent of the dreams became clear to him, Abraham decided to fulfil God's command and offer his beloved son in sacrifice.
Although Abraham was ready to sacrifice his dearest for Allah’s sake, he could not just go and drag his son to the place of sacrifice without his consent. Isma'el had to be consulted as to whether he was willing to give up his life as fulfillment to God's command. This consultation would be a major test of Isma'el’s maturity in faith, love and commitment for Allah, willingness to obey his father and sacrifice his own life for the sake of Allah.
Abraham presented the matter to his son and asked for his opinion about the dreams of slaughtering him. Ishmael’s reaction was absolutely astounding. He did not show any hesitation or reservation even for a moment. He said, “Father, do what you have been commanded. You will find me, Insha'Allah (God willing), to be very patient.” His mature response, his deep insight into the nature of dad’s dreams, his commitment to Allah, and ultimately his willingness to sacrifice his own life for the sake of Allah were all unprecedented.
When both father and son had shown their perfect obedience to Allah and they had practically demonstrated their willingness to sacrifice their most precious possessions for His sake—Abraham by laying down his son for sacrifice and Ishmael by lying patiently under the knife – Allah called out to them stating that his sincere intentions had been accepted, and that he need not carry out the killing of Ishmael. Instead, Abraham was told to replace his son with a ram to sacrifice instead. Allah also told them that they had passed the test imposed upon them by his willingness to carry out God's command.[9]
This is mentioned in the Holy Qur'an as follows:
"O my Lord! Grant me a righteous (son)!" So We gave him the good news of a boy, possessing forbearance. And when (his son) was old enough to walk and work with him, (Abraham) said: O my dear son, I see in vision that I offer you in sacrifice: Now see what is your view!" (The son) said: "O my father! Do what you are commanded; if Allah wills, you will find me one practising patience and steadfastness!" So when they both submitted and he threw him down upon his forehead, We called out to him saying: O Ibraheem! You have indeed fulfilled the vision; surely thus do We reward those who do good. Most surely this was a manifest trial. And We ransomed him with a momentous sacrifice. And We perpetuated (praise) to him among the later generations. "Peace and salutation to Abraham!" Thus indeed do We reward those who do right. Surely he was one of Our believing servants.[10]
As a reward for this sacrifice, Allah then granted Abraham the good news of the birth of his second son, Is-haaq (Isaac):
And We gave him the good news of Is-haaq, a prophet from among the righteous. [11]
Abraham had shown that his love for his Lord superseded all others: that he would lay down his own life or the lives of those dearest to him in submission to God's command. Muslims commemorate this ultimate act of sacrifice every year during Eid al-Adha.
In keeping with the tradition of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, Muslims are encouraged to prepare themselves for the occasion of Eid. Below is a list of things Muslims are recommended to do in preparation for the Eid al-Adha festival:
1. Wake up early (before sunrise). 2. Make wudu (ablution) and offer Salat al-Fajr (the pre-sunrise prayer). 3. Prepare for personal cleanliness - take care of details of clothing, etc. 4. Take a Ghusl (bath) after Fajr prayer. 5. Brush teeth (preferably with a miswak, or tooth-stick). 6. Dress up, putting on new or best clothes available (White, when available, is optimal[12]). 7. Apply (alcohol free) perfume (attar) (men only). 8. It is customary to eat dates preferably or something before going to Eid prayers but you can't eat sacrificed meat as Sacrifice must be done after Eid prayers to be accepted as Sacrifice otherwise it becomes just normal meat and no reward for sacrifice. [13] 9. Go to the prayer grounds (known as an 'Eidgah') early. 10. Offer Salat al-Eid (the congregational Eid prayer) in an open place, weather permitting, or in mosque. 11. Use two separate routes when travelling to and from the Eid prayer location. 12. Recite the following Takbir which starts at Maghrib (sunset) on the 9th of Dhu al-hijah and last until the Asr on the 12th Dhu al-ilhijah: Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar, Allahu-Akbar. La ilaha illa-lah wallahu-Akbar. Allahu-Akbar wa-lillahil-hamd, which translates to: "Allah (God) is the Greatest (3 times); there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and Allah is the Greatest. Allah is the Greatest and to Him are due all praises."
[edit] Salat al-Eid
Salat al-Eid is Wajib (strongly recommended, but just short of obligatory). It consists of two Raka'ah (units) with six additional Takbirs. No adhan (Call to Prayer) or iqama (call) is to be pronounced for this Eid prayer.[14] It must be offered in congregation. The Salaat (prayer) is followed by the Khutbah, or sermon, by the Imam. The Khutbah is part of the worship and listening to it is Wajib. During the Khutbah, the Imam reminds the Muslim community about its responsibilities and obligations towards Allah, and good works, kindness, mercy and generosity towards their fellow Muslims and humanity as a whole.
At the conclusion of the prayers and sermon, the Muslims embrace and exchange greetings with one other (Eid Mubarak), give gifts (Eidi) to children, and visit one another. Many Muslims also take this opportunity to invite their non-Muslims friends, neighbours, co-workers and classmates to their Eid festivities to better acquaint them about Islam and Muslim culture.[15]
[edit] Rules Regarding the Animal to be Sacrificed
1. The animal has to be one of the cattle approved by the Sharia (Cow, Camel, Goat, Sheep etc.) 2. The animal has reached the required age. The adult age is: (a) One year for a goat, sheep, lamb (b) Two years for a cow (c) Five years for a camel. 3. The animal is free from an obvious defect like a one-eyed animal whose defect is obvious, a sick animal whose sickness is obvious, a lame animal whose limp is obvious and an emaciated animal that has no marrow in its bones 4. The animal is in full possession of the one who is offering the sacrifice; i.e. it is not stolen or taken by force, not of joint possession or held in pledge 5. The animal can not be sold or given away once selected or bought for sacrifice, unless exchanging for something better.[16]
[edit] Rules Related to the Person offering the Sacrifice
1. Being a Muslim 2. It is necessary for the one who intends to offer the sacrifice that he does not remove any hair or nail from the sunset on last day of Zhul-Qa’dah until the sacrifice is done on the Eid day 3. Doing the slaughter with one’s own hands. If one is not able to do so then he can appoint some one else to do the slaughter on his behalf. In such case one should witness his slaughter if at all possible. 4. It is a necessary condition of the sacrifice that the animal be slaughtered with the intention of offering a sacrifice (udhiyah). The intention must be in the heart, and should not be spoken out loud. 5. Taking the Name of Allah at the time of slaughter.
Men, women, and children are expected to dress in their finest clothing to perform Eid prayer (ṣalātu l-`Īdi) in a large congregation is an open waqf field called Eidgah or mosque. Those Muslims who can afford, i.e Malik-e-Nisaab; sacrifice their best domestic animals (usually a cow, but can also be a camel, goat, sheep or ram depending on the region) as a symbol of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his only son. The sacrificed animals, called Uḍhiyyah (Arabic: أضحية, also known by its Persian term, "al-Qurbāni"), have to meet certain age and quality standards or else the animal is considered an unacceptable sacrifice.
The regular charitable practices of the Muslim community are demonstrated during Eid al-Adha by concerted efforts to see that no impoverished person is left without an opportunity to partake in the sacrificial meal during these days.
During Eid al-Adha, distributing meat amongst the people, chanting the Takbir out loud before the Eid prayer on the first day and after prayers throughout the three days of Eid, are considered essential parts of this important Islamic festival. In some countries, families that do not own livestock can make a contribution to a charity that will provide meat to those who are in need.

This was the main cake that took centre place on the table yesterday at my son's 1st and nephews 2nd birthday party. Their birthday is tomorrow! As it was a joint birthday party we needed to make sure there was enough cake for everyone so as well as this I did 2 others. Very hard work!! This is obviously an Andrea's Sweetcakes design. Two 9" vanilla sponges on bottom tier and two 7" lemon Madeira cakes on top tier. I forgot to take pictures before the party so I'm hoping my cousin has some better ones that I can upload showing all the details.

Pike Place Market is a public market overlooking the Elliott Bay waterfront in Seattle, Washington, United States. The Market opened August 17, 1907, and is one of the oldest continually operated public farmers' markets in the United States. It is a place of business for many small farmers, craftspeople and merchants. Named after the central street, Pike Place runs northwest from Pike Street to Virginia Street, and remains one of Seattle's most popular tourist destinations.
--Wikipedia
The Market is built on the edge of a steep hill, and consists of several lower levels located below the main level. Each features a variety of unique shops. Antique dealers, comic book sellers, small family-owned restaurants, while the area contains one of the few remaining head shops left in Seattle. The upper street level contains fishmongers, fresh produce stands and craft stalls operating in the covered arcades. Local farmers and craftspeople sell year-round in the arcades from tables they rent from the Market on a daily basis, in accordance with the Market's mission and founding goal: allowing consumers to "Meet the Producer."
Pike Place Market is home to nearly 500 low income residents who live in 8 different buildings throughout the Market. The Market is run by the quasi-government Pike Place Market Preservation and Development Authority (PDA). The Pike Place Market sees 10 million visitors annually

Sura An-Nasr (Arabic: سورة النصر) (Divine Support) is the 110th sura of the Qur'an with 3 ayat. Al-Nasr translates to English as "The Victory". This the third shortest sura after sura Al-Asr and Al-Kawthar, with only three medium length ayahs. This is believed to be the last revelation given to Muhammad and a sign to his approaching death.

Summary
The surat praises God for leading numerous people to Islam. According to Tafsir ibn Kathir, this sura, like Surat Al-Ikhlas, is an equivalent to one fourth of the entire Qur'an. This was the last sura to be revealed, only a few months before the Prophet's death.
Tafsir ibn Kathir quotes a hadith, which states that Muhammad said with reference to this sura:
Verily, the people have entered into the religion of God in crowds and they will also leave it in crowds.
Commentary
This short surah brings the good news to Allah's Messenger concerning the advent of victory, the Conquest and peoples' collective acceptance of Allah's religion. It instructs him to turn towards his Lord in a devoted adoration and a humble request for His forgiveness. The surah also presents the nature and the righteousness of this Faith and its ideology - how high humanity ascends to an ideal and brilliant summit unattainable otherwise than by responding to the call of Islam.
Of the several traditions regarding the revelation of this surah, we quote that of Imam Ahmad which goes as follows:
Aisha said that the Messenger of Allah used to repeat very frequently, towards the end of his life, 'Exaltations and praises be to Allah, whose forgiveness I ask; I repent of my sins.' He also said, 'My Lord told me I would see a sign in my nation. He ordered me to praise Him, the Forgiving, and ask His pardon when I see this sign. Indeed, I have. When the victory granted by Allah and the Conquest come ... (transmitted by Muslim)
Ibn Katheer said in his commentary on the Qur'an:
The Conquest', it is unanimously agreed, is a reference to the conquest of Makka. The Arab tribes were awaiting the settlement of the conflict between Quraish and the Muslims, before accepting Islam, saying: 'If he, Muhammad, prevails over his people, he would indeed be a prophet.' Consequently, when that was accomplished they accepted Islam in large numbers. Not two years were to pass after the conquest of Makka when the whole Arabian Peninsula was dominated by Islam, and, all thanks to Allah, every Arab tribe had declared its belief Islam.
Al-Bukhari in his Sahih related
Amr ibn Salamah said that when Makka was conquered, every tribe hastened to declare acceptance of Islam to Allah's Messenger. They were waiting for it to take place saying, Leave them to themselves. He would indeed be a prophet if he prevailed over them.
This version is the one which agrees chronologically with the beginning of the surah in the sense that its revelation was a sign of something to follow with some instructions to the Prophet, on what he should do when this event took place.
There is, nevertheless, another fairly similar version in agreement with the one we have chosen and it is that by Ibn 'Abbas which says:
Umar used to let me join the company of elders who were present at Badr, some of whom felt uneasy and asked why I should be allowed with them when I was young. But ' Umar said to them, 'You know that he is of high standing.' One day 'Umar invited them all and invited me as well. I felt that he wanted to show them who I was so he asked them, 'What do you make of Allah's saying, ' When the victory granted by Allah and the Conquest come?' Some of them replied, 'He ordered us to praise Him and seek His forgiveness when He helps us to triumph and bestows His favours on us.' The others remained silent. Then 'Umar asked me, 'Do you agree with this view, Ibn Abbas?' I answered in the negative. 'Umar asked me again. 'What then do you say?' I replied, 'It was a sign from Allah to His Messenger indicating the approach of the end of his life meaning, when the victory from Allah and the Conquest come, you; end is near, so extol the praises of your Lord and seek His forgiveness.' 'Umar commented, 'I have known no more than what you have said. (transmitted by al Bukhari).
So it is possible that the Messenger, having witnessed his Lord's sign, realized that he had fulfilled his mission on this earth and that it was time for him to leave, which was what Ibn 'Abbas actually meant.
However, there is another account narrated by Al-Hafiz al Baihaqi also attributed to Ibn 'Abbas who according to it said
When this surah was first revealed, the Messenger of Allah called Fatimah and said, 'My death has been announced to me.' She was seen to start crying, then she smiled. She explained later, 'I cried when he told me of his approaching death. But he said to me, 'Be restrained, because you will be the first of my family to join me', so I smiled.'
According to the last tradition quoted the time of the revelation of the surah is actually fixed as coming later than the sign, that is, the Conquest and the people's collective movement into Islam. When events took place in this fashion the Messenger of Allah knew that his life would soon come to a close. But again the first account is more authentic and fits in more suitably with the outline of the beginning of the surah, especially as the Fatimah incident is related in a different form which gives more weight to what we have suggested. This other form goes as follows:
Umm Salamah, the Prophet's wife said: The Messenger of Allah called Fatimah to him sometime during the year of the Conquest and he said something to her. She cried. Then he spoke to her again and she was smiling. After he had died, I asked her about the incident and she explained 'The Messenger of Allah told me he was soon to die, so I cried. Then he told me that I would be the next most celebrated woman in Paradise after Mariam (Mary), the daughter of Imran, so I smiled.'
This narration agrees with the general meaning of the Qur'anic text and with what Imam Ahmad related which appears in the Sahih of Muslim - that is, there was a sign (in the surah) between Allah and His Messenger and when the Conquest was accomplished the latter knew that he was soon to meet his Lord, so he spoke to Fatimah in the manner described by Umm Salamah.
Let us now consider the actual text of the surah and the injunction it gives for all time: When the victory granted by Allah and the Conquest come, and you see people embracing the religion of Allah in large numbers. Then, celebrate the praises of your Lord and seek His forgiveness. He is ever disposed to mercy.
The beginning of the first verse implicitly presents a concept of what goes on in this universe: the events that take place in this life, and the actual role of the Messenger of Allah and his followers in the progress of Islam, and to what extent it depends on their efforts. "When the victory granted by Allah", denotes that it is Allah's victory and Allah is the One who brings it about in His own good time, in the form He decides and for the purpose He determines. The Prophet and his companions have nothing to do with it at all, and they obtain no personal gain from it. It suffices them that He does it through them, appoints them as its guards and entrusts it to them. This is all they acquire from the victory of Allah, the Conquest and the people's acceptance en masse of His religion.
According to this concept, the duty of the Messenger and his companions whom Allah chose and gave the privilege of being the instruments of His victory, was to turn to Him at the climax of victory in praise, expressing gratitude and seeking forgiveness. Gratitude and praise are for His being so generous as to have chosen them to be the standard bearers of His religion; for the mercy and favour He did to all humanity by making His religion victorious; and for the Conquest of Makka and the people's collective acceptance of Islam.
His forgiveness is sought for the various unrevealed, defective feelings, such as vanity, which sometimes creep into one's heart at the overwhelming moment of victory attained after a long struggle. Human beings can hardly prevent this happening and therefore Allah's forgiveness is to be sought for it. Forgiveness also has to be sought for what might have been insinuated into one's heart during the long and cruel struggle and for petulance resulting from the belatedness of victory or the effects of convulsive despair, as the Qur'an brings out elsewhere: Or think you that you will enter Paradise while yet there has not come to you the like of that which came to those who died before you? Affliction and adversity befell them; they were shaken as with earthquake, till the Messenger (of Allah) and those who believed along with him said: 'When will Allah's help come?' Now surely Allah's help is near. (Al-Qur'an 2:214)
It is also necessary to seek Allah's forgiveness for one's shortcomings in praising Allah and thanking Him for His favours which are perpetual and infinite. And if you were to count the favours of Allah, never will you be able to number them. (Al-Qur'an 16:18)
However much one's efforts in this respect, they are never adequate. Another touching thought is that seeking forgiveness at the moment of triumph arouses in one's mind the feeling of impotence and imperfection at a time when an attitude of self-esteem and conceit seems natural. All these factors guarantee that no tyranny will afflict the conquered. The victorious is made to realize that it is Allah who has appointed him, a man who has no power of his own and is devoid of any strength, for a pre determined purpose; consequently the triumph and the conquest as well as the religion are all His, to Whom all things ultimately return.
This is the lofty, dignified ideal the Qur'an exhorts people to toil towards and attain, an ideal in which man's exaltation is in neglecting his own pride and where his soul's freedom is in his subservience to Allah. The goal set is the total release of human souls from their egoistic shackles, their only ambition being to attain Allah's pleasure. Along with this release there must be exerted a striving which helps man to flourish in the world, promote human civilisation and provide a rightly-guided, unblemished, constructive, just leadership devoted to Allah.
In contrast, man's efforts to liberate himself while in the grip of egoism, shackled by his zest for worldly things, or overpowered by his cravings, turn out to be absolutely in vain unless he sets himself free from self and lets his loyalty to Allah override everything else, particularly at the moment of triumph and the collecting of booty.
Such a standard of behaviour, which Allah wants humanity to aspire towards and to attain, was the characteristic feature of the Prophets at all times.
So it was the case with Prophet Yussuf (Joseph), when all he wanted was achieved and his dream came true:
and he placed his parents high on the throne of dignity and they fell down prostrate before him. He said: 'Father! This is the fulfillment of my dream of old. My Lord has made it come true. He has been gracious to me. He has released me from prison and has brought you from the desert after Satan had stirred-up strife between me and my brothers. My Lord is gracious with all that He plans to do. He is full of knowledge and wisdom. (Al-Qur'an 12:100)
Then, at that moment of climax, Yussuf took himself away from the jubilations and from the embracing arms to turn towards his Lord, praising him with a pure feeling of gratitude: My Lord! You have given me something of sovereignty and power and have taught me something of the interpretation of visions. Creator of the heavens and the earth! You are my Protector in this world and the here after. Let me die in submission and join the righteous. (Al-Qur'an 12:101)
Thus vanished the feeling of predominance and reputation and the happiness brought by his reunion with his family, and the picture we are left with is of that individual, Yussuf, praying to Allah to help him remain submissive to Him until he dies and to let him, out of His mercy and grace, join His righteous servants. So, it was also with Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon), when he saw the Queen of Sheba's throne brought into his very reach in a flash: And when he (Sulaiman) saw it set in his presence he said: 'This is of the bounty of my Lord, that He may try me whether I give thanks or remain ungrateful. He who gives thanks does so for his own good, and he who is ungrateful ... my Lord is all sufficient and bountiful. (Al-Qur'an 27:40)
And so indeed it was with Muhammad all through his life. In the moment of triumph, as the Conquest of Makka was accomplished, he entered it on the back of his camel with his head bowed down. He forgot the joy of victory and thankfully bowed his head seeking his Lord's forgiveness, though he had just conquered Makka, the city whose people had openly and unashamedly persecuted and expelled him. This also was the practice of his companions after him.
Thus, upon belief in Allah, was that great generation of humanity raised very high, reaching an unparalleled standard of greatness, power and freedom.
