For mums-to-be like Musu, giving birth can be a matter of life and death.

She's gone into labour in one of the most dangerous places in the world to have a baby – Sierra Leone. Here, a shocking one in four deaths of women at child-bearing age happen during pregnancy and childbirth and tragically one in eleven babies are lost before their first birthday.

The stories of these three women at Freetown's maternity ward highlight the dangers mums face – and the difficulties its staff do their best to deal with.

While one mother has successfully given birth, the patient in the middle is facing complications. The woman at the far end of the ward sadly lost her baby after suffering severe bleeding.

Musu is one of the lucky ones. She's just given birth to a healthy boy.

With the free help of skilled doctors, nurses and midwives at the maternity hospital in Freetown, she delivered without a problem. But in poor countries like Sierra Leone, there's not always enough medical staff and know-how at hand.

Midwives at Freetown's maternity hospital are already putting the training into practice. They're checking the progress of labour on a partograph – a chart that helps them to spot any early warning signs of a problematic birth.

The training they received from British doctors helps them to deal with the main causes of mothers' deaths – including severe bleeding and obstructions during birth. It also includes care for new babies and emergency help like resuscitation and surgical skills.

fishing by the light of the moon

such is island life here.

many up at dawn hoping to make some money to feed their families,

life is simple.

bob and i were talking yesterday. not many islander have a big house with a big mortgage. they aren't consumed like north americans in that way. it is much more simple. make enough to live on. food and clothing. simple. and yet not easy.

times are hard financially on the island right now.

so this shot is much more then just another 'moon' shot to me. it speaks of the people's determination to keep trying, to keep persevering, to keep believing that today will be better then yesterday.

yeah... love these people so much.

The scheme teaches hands on skills and encourages health workers to keep their expertise up to date in the long run too.

As well as educating health workers directly, the programme coaches people to be trainers themselves, so that they can pass on their skills to new doctors, nurses and midwives in the future.

Scenes like this are all too familiar in Sierra Leone. This family are taking away the bodies of two stillborn children. They were twins: a boy and girl.

Their mother developed pre-eclampsia during labour – a condition which leads to bodily swelling and puts herself and children at serious risk. Tragically, she died too.

British volunteers like Dr Mohamed Yilla, from Aberdeen (centre), are helping to prevent these tragedies. He's part of a scheme – funded by UK aid – that is helping to cut the high numbers of deaths in mothers and babies in poor countries.

The initiative – called Making it Happen – takes skilled health workers from Britain to share their expertise with doctors, nurses and midwives in countries across Africa and Asia.

Musu's healthy baby boy is living proof that the scheme is paying off. Both she and her son are doing well back at their home in Freetown, Sierra Leone.

They’re not the only ones. Mothers' deaths have reduced by nearly 30% in hospitals trained up by the Making it Happen scheme, while the number of babies dying was cut by around 15%.

As I worked through what I want 2012 to look like and listened intently to what the Universe was hinting at, I used some old techniques and some new. I read my Fairy Tale Tarot deck and looked at Sabian Symbols. I prayed in Meeting and in my car. I listened to the conversations I had with my friends and examined what stories were really speaking to me during this time. I brainstormed qualities and imagined scenes from the year. It took a lot of pondering and meditating and thinking, but finally… I am ready to unveil 2012.

Grabbing the Tiger By the Tail

2012 will be a year of saying yes to adventure, of facing the fearsome, of just doing it, no matter what "it" is.

2012 will look ballsy and awesome, effortless and amazing! Sometimes it will look as challenging as it feels, but it will always look real.

2012 will feel exciting and terrifying, hard but do-able, good like a hard work out or a tricky puzzle.

2012 will be bright orange and zebra striped. It will smell like cinnamon and snow. It will sound like big bells, the crack of a bat and the roar of a crowd, it will sound like the Rocky Theme song (being played by a Hawaiian marching band... which will follow me everywhere this year. Get ready).

Day 56.

Decided to start looking in earnest for a new job. Things aren't great at work and can't get any better when the two team members go next month. Already I've been added to the rota for the late shifts again and am getting less time to do the project I enjoy.

That, added to the sudden death last night of the lad who sat next to me in the mornings when I was in the call centre (who was also working on the services project that I was doing), makes me think that any more time spent doing the job I've grown to resent, is time wasted (and I'm not getting any younger, let's face it).

So, I'll be scouring the local papers, checking with the agencies and the job centre, looking on-line and approaching places I'd like to work in the hope that something comes my way.

It's about time I got off my fat arse and started to make it happen.

Sick day. Boo. I wanted to go to the Poetry Slam at the Green Mill, but still didn't feel too hot, so instead I watched movies, read and slept. Basically I was a domesticated house cat, if they could read.

This, by the way, is one of my favorite mugs. It's the sheep from Wallace and Grommitt which I bought when living in London. It helps the medicine go down.

Leslie Conery, Deputy CEO of ISTE and Chair of ISTE's Annual Conference, travelled to Toronto to present Peter and Brenda with the "Making IT Happen" award, in acknowledgement of all the work they have done over the years in supporting educators as they work to integrate technology into learning.

The awards were presented to Brenda and Peter following Friday's keynote at the annual #ecoo11 conference. Peter and Brenda are the facilitating minds behind the wonderful Minds on Media events.
