The port of Makassar is the largest city of Sulawesi (and number five in Indonesia). It had been an important trading post long before the Dutch took control in the early 17th century.
A sunset in Makassar harbour. A lot of boats in the wooden pier.

Makassar wins for the least charming city I've ever been to... by a huge margin. But of course I had to make the most of it, and drag Peter and Elise to the old port to see some boats. It was stinky and early in the morning and stupidly hot. I don't think they appreciated it quite as much as I did.
A broken ship at Paotere traditional port in Makassar Indonesia usually were let drowned to the bottom of the sea, as the cost to haul it would be far too expensive for these poor fishermen.
I travelled alone for an assignment :)
Makassar (Buginese) – sometimes spelled Macassar, Mangkasara' – is the provincial capital of South Sulawesi, Indonesia. It is the largest city on Sulawesi Island in terms of population number and the fifth largest city in Indonesia after Jakarta, Surabaya, Bandung, and Medan. From 1971 to 1999, the city was named Ujung Pandang, after a precolonial fort in the city, and the two names are often used interchangeably. The port city is located on the southwest coast of the island of Sulawesi, facing the Makassar Strait.
This is a fairly new mosque that was made by the initiative and benefaction of the current vice president of Indonesia. Reputed to be the richest man of the country who made his fortune in holdings from real estate to forestry, Hj Jusuf Kalla made sure that this mosque stands out in lime and soft yellow. The exterior and interior furnishings are said to have come from Turkey.
