Korestia is a historic region of Western Macedonia in Greece. It’s a cluster of mountain villages (Ano and Kato Kranionas, Halara, Ano and Kato Melas, Makrochori, Mavrokampos, Agios Antonios, Gavros) exhibiting strong architectural and cultural interest. The traditional architecture of the villages is great for the region of Western Macedonia. Old houses are constructed with handmade bricks with red clay and straw, giving a reddish color to the landscape. The construction of the houses was maintained until the mid-20th century and then abandoned.

Frías is a municipality and city in Spain, north of the province of Burgos, autonomous community of Castilla y León. The city is the head of the municipality, framed in the region of Las Merindades, judicial district of Villarcayo.

On the hill of La Muela, and close to the wide and mighty river Ebro, a strategic enclave was established for the passage of said river, since Roman times and especially in medieval times, which linked the Cantabrian coast and the plateau, giving rise to the notable prosperity of Frías and its monumental complex.

It maintains a medieval urban structure that crowns the castle of the Velasco family and the church of San Vicente. The buildings maintain a constructive system in which they are attached to each other. The sunroom on the upper floor uses tuff and timber framing.

Together with the municipalities of Oña and Poza de la Sal, it forms the Raíces de Castilla commonwealth.

The two forms of black-tailed deer that occupy coastal woodlands in the Pacific Northwest of North America are subspecies of the mule deer (Odocoileus hemionus). They have sometimes been treated as a species, but virtually all recent authorities maintain they are subspecies. The Columbian black-tailed deer is found in western North America, from Northern California into the Pacific Northwest of the United States and coastal British Columbia in Canada. The Sitka deer is found coastally in British Columbia, southeast Alaska, and southcentral Alaska (as far as Kodiak Island).

These two subspecies thrive on the edge of the forest, as the dark forest lacks the underbrush and grasslands the deer prefer as food, and completely open areas lack the hiding spots and cover they prefer for harsh weather. One of the plants that black-tailed deer browse is western poison oak, despite its irritant content. This deer often is most active at dawn and dusk, and is frequently involved in collisions with automobiles. (Wikipedia)

This is the Columbian sub-species. Based on maps of sightings in iNaturalist, the Sitka sub-species is not found on Vancouver Island.

There were three deer roaming the parking lot at our hotel. They then just ambled across the road to the flower beds on the other side, totally oblivious to the traffic. Thankfully, no collisions ensured.

Birds spend a lot of time caring for their plumage. The impermeability is ensured thanks to their uropygian gland, located at the base of the tail. It secretes a fatty liquid with which they smear their feathers. Without our knowing the reason, some birds are willing to expose themselves to the sun, their tail and wings spread out. Other species like to take dry, powdery earth baths. Eurasian jays and starlings prefer ants. The latter provide formic acid which has insecticidal properties. After bathing, smoothing to readjust the feathers is an important operation that requires time. Well-maintained plumage is the guarantee of survival.

PS: A big thank you to all those who choose to look at, comment on and like my photos. It is much appreciated, as you have noticed, I no longer respond directly to your comment just to say in fact "thank you and have a good day", but in return I will leave a small trace with you on one or more of your editions.

These charming orchid varieties are the perfect size for a table, shelf, or counter. Very easy to care for and flowering can last for weeks. When the blooming period ends the foliage still makes an attractive houseplant.

They are simple to maintain even by those with very little experience caring for houseplants.

A beautiful kingfisher predominantly found in the mangrove habitats around coastal regions and along estuaries and rivers. This is also one of the few migratory kingfishers in the country. The bird is seen much of the year except during the rainy season where it disappears and is thought to migrate south for the breeding season.

The bird is quite distinctive in its appearance with a black cap, purple wings and reddish beak. This Kingfisher is observed perching conspicuously - usually on a narrow perch like in this picture, or an open branch extending onto the water from where it dives into the water to catch fish or sometimes insects. This behaviour is quite different from the Stork Billed Kingfisher or Collared Kingfisher both of which perch inside the trees on branches making them hard to sight many times.

We sighted this bird on the banks of Zuari River, though we couldn't get closer much to my disappointment. The morning low tide exposed the banks due to which the boat had to maintain distance.

Thank you very much in advance for your views, feedback and faves.

As a car enthusiast I do like it when I see a shiny bodywork on a classic car. That means, well kept, well maintained and it usually shows that the owner actually likes what he's doing. However, some times, the old timers need to be seen with the touch of time on them. I found this old truck parked on the yard of a winery at the Finger Lakes in NY. It quickly drew my attention, sitting there like an old rusty fella having proudly served its cause by hauling loads of grapes and crates of good wines.

Fountain Elms was maintained as a house museum, exhibiting the Proctors' paintings, prints and decorative furnishings as the nucleus of a permanent collection. In June of 1941, the Institute was granted the power to "provide instruction in higher education at the college level in the field of fine arts with authority to confer the degree of bachelor of fine arts." Spectacular Whangarei Falls is a 26m high waterfall surrounded by park and native New Zealand bush. There is plenty of parking, a picnic area and free entry. You can view the waterfall from a choice of 3 platforms above the falls or by walking down a well-maintained gravel track to the bottom.

Whangarei Falls is located in Whangarei Scenic Reserve. The classic curtain waterfall is part of the Hatea River and one of the most popular swimming spot in the area. Easy access and a well-maintained Scenic Reserve make this waterfall one of New Zealand Must See Waterfalls.

I liked this one of the gallinules and did a photoshop treatment of mainly the water. I tried to maintain the integrity of the original and add something to spice up one of the most common species in my area.

12-february-2021: snow is white, so it is a body that reflects light 90% (albedo 0,9 out of 1), therefore maintaining the originary wavelength.

Contrary to what is believed, it is clear bodies, those that reflect the light the most, apparently "color themselves" more, reflecting and therefore making the wavelengths of the colors of the light they reflect reach from those bodies; on the other hand, it is the bodies that most absorb light, especially dark ones, those that light up well and change their apparent color less, precisely because they absorb light, which does not mean "turning on", but making it one's own by not showing it.

The snow, therefore, pure white, is really white only when illuminated by an equally clear and pure light, like the sun on a clear day; already in the shade, on a bright and flawless day, we notice that it generally becomes bluish, reflecting the light of the clear sky, as well as in the evening.

But it can have many shades, even very strong ones, such as pink-orange at sunset, or the less fascinating yellow and gray in pale sunny or cloudy days.

Bird Description: flic.kr/p/TNcMoC

Note: Photographing nesting birds is a sophisticated thing, it is recommended to maintain a distance that doesn't make the birds uncomfortable or feel threatened, and also to use proper hide is a good thing to do.

I have maintained my social isolation in family and with professional work at home. Here in Brazil we are already with more than 13.000 deaths by Covid-19.

That's why I'm posting my travel photos to Portugal of December 2019.

I hope that my friends here on Flickr are maintaining proper care...we will still overcome all this worldwide adversity.

The Arizona State Capitol in Phoenix, Arizona, United States, was the last home for Arizona's Territorial government, until Arizona became a state in 1912. Initially, all three branches of the new state government occupied the four floors of the statehouse. As the state expanded the branches relocated to adjacent buildings and additions. The 1901 portion of the Capitol is now maintained as the Arizona Capitol Museum with a focus on the history and culture of Arizona. The Arizona State Library which occupied most of the 1938 addition until July 2017 re-opened in late 2018 as a part of the Arizona Capitol Museum.

From it's most earliest days in the early 1900's to it's sad end in the mid 1950's Packard maintained a signature design element on their grill surrounds. Starting lower on the sides the grill surrounds would bump up and raise in the center, and you will find versions of this on every model of every Packard for every year of Packard's existence. When I first came upon the Reo in the photo the first thing I noticed was the Packard like grill surround, and thinking, in fact, that it was indeed a Packard. Well, that was only true until I noticed the emblem in the center with the letters R E O emblazoned on it. Like Packard in their day, Reo was considered somewhat of a luxury automobile, and as such, they were priced accordingly. I suspect, however, that they didn't have the same panache that Packard enjoyed. So, was the Packard like grill surround on this 1930 Reo a design coincidence, or could you say that "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery?" REO, the company, was founded by the former founder and owner of the Oldsmobile company, Ransom E. Olds (Notice the first letters in his name REO.) The company started in Lansing, Michigan, and had a long and somewhat successful history producing cars and trucks from 1905 to 1975. In 1936, Reo stopped producing cars in favor of devoting it's time to the end in 1975 to producing trucks.

Vince M

Although truck orders during World War II enabled it to revive somewhat, the company remained unstable in the postwar era, resulting in a bankruptcy reorganization. In 1954, the company was still underperforming, and sold its vehicle manufacturing operations (the primary asset of the company) to the Bohn Aluminum and Brass Corporation of Detroit. Three years later, in 1957, Reo's vehicle manufacturing operation became a subsidiary of the White Motor Company. White then merged REO with Diamond T Trucks in 1967 to form Diamond Reo Trucks. In 1975, this company filed for bankruptcy and most of its assets were liquidated. Volvo later took over White and thus currently owns the rights to the REO brand name.

The temperatures dropped to -10C on Sunday night and most of the ponds froze over in the area to the east of Tofield, Alberta, Canada so it it was investing times photographing these birds on the ice.

View of Whitley Court ruins and the well maintained gardens...

Nice viewed large...

The historic and beautifully maintained revival-style mansion was built in 1851 and occupies 29+ acres. There are 24 rooms including 7 guest bedrooms, 8 full bathrooms and private living quarters on the 3rd floor. Comes with a fully furnished gourmet kitchen. Banquet facility can accomodate up to 200. An octagon banquet hall provides additional opportunities for the owner and adds to the splendor of the structure. There is a cottage with 3 private bedrooms as well as 3 additional structures. The inn is situated in the charming Gaslight Village of Wyoming, NY 226

The Xantus Hummingbird is one of three endemic birds to the Baja Peninsula, specifically the southern end. The XH appears in various locations down there. I found this bird in a beautiful garden outside of Todos Santos, which is on the southwest side of the Baja near the very bottom.

If I'm honest, my luck was ridiculously good. I took a two hour bus ride, walked 3 km up some hills on dusty roads (the previous image is taken from that walk). As soon as I arrived at what I believed was the likely location, I heard the hummingbird give its distinctive one-note chirp. I glanced upward, and there he was. I got pretty good shots before he flew off to other parts of this very well maintained garden of flowers and cacti.

I then walked down to the water to look for gulls and photograph Frigate birds. Once I had finished that, I thought I might as well have another look for the Xantus Hummingbird. This time he landed on the leaf of an Agave Cactus with the sun hitting him and illuminating the spaces between the cactus's other leaves.

I have to put in the effort to find the birds. The bird also has to be in the same place at the same time as I. Those are pretty great odds. Getting a glorious shot is just great luck.

This is an example of what I call Apex Birding: go look for a lifer; find the lifer; capture a photo that I am 100% happy with.

Union Pacific C40-8 9299 was blowing up as it solo-blasted a westbound stack train just west of Norway.

It was built by General Electric in 1989 and was looking a little sick as it struggled to maintain track speed as it tossed its guts skyward into the Iowa air.

Assigning a second motor might have been a good idea.

Having photographed this operation numerous times it was always a joy to see the care used in maintaining these units well into the UP era. This shot was taken in March 2000 and look at how clean these units are. The mechanical staff at Helper really took great care of these units.

San Francisco has maintained its reputation as a center of cultural bohemianism. In earlier years it had drawn writers from Mark Twain to Jack London, and it became a center for the 1950s beat poets and for the Haight-Ashbury hippie counterculture that peaked with the 1967 “Summer of Love.”

Taken within walking distance of my home , and if there was anyone else was about it was easy to maintain a safe distance

Some Hadada ibis maintain a pair bonding throughout the year. Commonly, a female, with her wings half-open, approaches a male and touches her beak to his beak. After this brief mutual beak-to-beak touching, she resumes feeding elsewhere among the party. Billing behavior of pairs includes rattling of beaks up and down and side-to-side while nodding heads. Courtship includes the offering of sticks by each bird to the other 😄, followed by neck intertwining, mutual preening, head shaking

“Hut” is the canoe term to change the bow paddle to the other side in order to maintain direction as per the aim of the stern paddler. This image from the bottom of the canoe reveals the round opening of the water from the last paddle on the port side and the water ripples from the paddle water drops as it’s taken to the opposite starboard. The reason for this hut was to turn the canoe to the left to align towards the sunset as viewed below…

San Francisco Square in the Historic Center of Quito.

From left to right, in the San Francisco building, you can see the doors of the Chapel of Cantuña, the Chapel of Villacísla, the main church, the convent and the museum.

***

The Church and its chapels (La Iglesia de San Francisco), which were considered sacred places.

Together, Church and Convent encompass three hectares including 13 cloisters (six of them major), three churches, and a large courtyard. In total, about 40,000 square meters of construction. San Francisco follows the classical typology of medieval monasteries. The main Church is the guiding axis and from there the cloister galleries extend: the refectory, the chapterhouse, and winery. These define a quadrangular courtyard, with the four respective pandas, or galleries: that of the chapter room, the refectory, the converts, and the mandatum. In addition to the basic dependencies of a convent, there were areas devoted to health care, education, crafts, a garden, and even a jail (to maintain strict discipline). The kitchen and dispensery operated in the cloister of services.

Walking from the Old Town’s narrow colonial streets into this open plaza reveals one of the finest sights in all of Ecuador: a sweeping cobblestone plaza backed by the mountainous backdrop of Volcán Pichincha, and the long, whitewashed walls and twin bell towers of Ecuador’s oldest church.

The Public Square (Plaza de San Francisco) was a purely urban space, demarcated and connected to various public activities (teaching, market, water supply).

Sad part of our History.

In pre-Hispanic Quito, the current lands of the Church and Convent of San Francisco were occupied by the royal palace of the Inca Huayna Cápac, before the advance of the armies commanded by the Spaniards from the south and the impossibility of defending the city the indigenous general Rumiñahui arranged the total destruction of it. In the city fire the palace was destroyed and buried under a huge amount of rubble and garbage. One of Rumiñahui's soldiers was the great-grandfather of the indigenous Cantuña, who as an eyewitness to the events had full knowledge of what was buried in the place. The construction of the church and convent of San Francisco began around 1537, just three years after the Spanish foundation of the city, with the completion of a provisional temple that was maintained until 1550, when construction of the current building began and which was completed around 1680. Although the building was officially inaugurated in 1705.

Erie Street, Historic Lowell, Arizona. A living snapshot of a different time in America is preserved and maintained by a community of volunteers. Visiting Erie Street is like walking into a 1950s post-apocalyptic landscape. From all that is immediately apparent, it could have been abandoned in a hurry and forgotten for half a century. Rusting cars, trucks, and an old Greyhound bus sit deserted along the street as if their passengers had suddenly vanished (or worse). Erie Street is most of what is left of Lowell, Arizona, a mining town incorporated into Bisbee in the early 1900s. Much of the town's residential area was demolished to widen an open-pit copper mine. Losing most of its residents caused the commercial district to struggle, and many businesses failed as a result. Today, the street's special curiosities include a Harley Davidson repair shop with a now-defunct gas pump and Sprouse Reitz Co., a department store that is nearly empty except for a few appliances and a whole pile of mannequin parts.

Despite appearing untouched since its decline, further investigation reveals that Erie Street is continually restored by a vibrant and passionate community of residents and volunteers who want to remember a different America. So although you can no longer see a show at Lowell's movie theater or pay $0.22 for gasoline, the Lowell Americana Project has made it possible to experience the street as a living snapshot of another time. And not everything on Erie Street is purely decorative—visit the Bisbee Breakfast Club for an excellent Huevos Rancheros.
