Mahjong - In Chinese, the game was originally called 麻雀 (pinyin: máquè)—meaning sparrow—which is still used in some southern dialects. It is said that the clacking of tiles during shuffling resembles the chattering of sparrows. There are 3 suits of 9 tiles and 15 special tiles depicting flowers, dragons, the four winds and the seasons. It has been so long since I played I have completely forgotten the rules but I still have my set of beautiful pieces.

There is also a 'pairs' Mahjong game for phones etc. which uses the traditional mahjong tile symbols.

At first glance, it may look like your average mahjong set.

But sharper ones will notice that the rather unique symbols and shapes on these tiles on display at the now closed Peace Centre, showing the twist from the usual mahjong designs.

Star Cruises is credited with almost single handedly developing the cruise industry in the Asia-Pacific region. Its foray into the global shipping market has allowed it to tap into lucrative and more mature markets in North America and Europe. Its services cater to Asian passengers as well as to North Americans, Europeans and Australians interested in Asian destinations.

Lively afternoon game of mahjong at a neighbrhood shop in Yangpu district.

Incredibly lucky hand I won at Mahjong yesterday!

Apparently these are the Flowers and Seasons tiles. Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter and Orchid, Chrysanthemum, Plum Blossom, Bamboo. But I can't see the resemblances. Since this set is likely to come from Singapore, maybe the special tiles have different names there? Numbers for Macro Monday

This rooster is a familiar sight for many old Hongkongers, belonging to a chain Mahjong* Club established in 1930. This shop at Temple street is the pioneer branch.

Temple Street (廟街) is a street located in the areas of Jordan and Yau Ma Tei in Kowloon, Hong Kong. It is known for its night market and as one of the busiest flea markets at night in the territory.

The night market lies in the Yau Ma Tei, Jordan part of the street. Popular with tourists and locals alike in the evening, it is also common to see the place crowded at dusk. It sells cheap merchandise and food items.

The place is sometimes known as "Men's Street".

* Mahjong is commonly played by four players. Similar to the Western card game rummy, Mahjong is a game of skill, strategy, and calculation and involves a degree of chance. It is also known as the "National game" in Hong Kong

These Mahjong tiles are really cool looking. They measure 1.4" tall, 1" wide, and are 3/4" thick! Much more like bricks than tiles.

The "MM" tile is in front for a reason.

Number 9s taken with a Macro Takumar 50/4.

looking through the viewfinder, i thought she was waving for the camera. turns out she was telling me not to take her photo, oops.

Introduced the wife and kids to Mahjong today - very successfully, with enjoyment all round.

'A mahjong school is a licensed venue in Hong Kong where people over the age of 18 can play mahjong.

Since 1871 privately run gambling businesses have been banned in Hong Kong; however mahjong-hosting venues have been tolerated by the Hong Kong government. After World War II the government has required such venues to obtain Mahjong/Tin Kau Licences with the constraint that such businesses must be known, in Legal English, as Mahjong Schools - a white lie to get around the ban on privately run gambling businesses. Although technically "schools", these Mahjong/Tin Kau Licences are issued by Television and Entertainment Licensing Authority.' Wikipedia
