Peziza varia is a saprobic fungus that is common in North America and can be found on decaying logs, wood chips or occasionally soil that is rich in organic matter. The tend to be more abundant in colder weather (early spring/autumn) and can grow in clusters, as seen here, or singly. Red sandstone heart, naturally occurring, found along beach in Vik, Iceland

Heart shaped stones regularly occur in nature and can often be found on beaches. It is thought that the shape arises from a cleave intersects a rock formation at a high angle and breaks. Gradual erosion by wave action smoths the edges and surface of the stone to produce a her shpe.

A tawny owlet harasses a parent for food.

A male juvenile tawny owl attempting (and narrowly failing) to take food from a sibling.

As you will see from the associated trail cam footage it was all over in the blink of an eye, and the owlet with the food left pretty quickly!

These 14 week old juvenile tawnys were part of a clutch of four, which along with their parents, were supported by an owl conservation project on Exmoor National Park (UK) in 2024. All four juveniles made it through to autumn dispersal and settling in new territories.

Tawnies are by far the most common owl species in the UK, with an estimated population of 50,000 pairs (2005). Nevertheless, they are amber-listed as a Species of Conservation Concern in the UK as a result of a probable decline (Eaton et al, 2015) later highlighted by the BTO Tawny Owl Point Survey 2018.
