One last @mesaverdenps shot for the road- we didn’t see much wildlife on this trip, but we did get to see one of the animals I was eager to see! A collared lizard darting over the rocks and looking to warm up and sun himself in the summer heat.

Don’t be fooled by the recent “make America beautiful again” executive order that’s been signed in the face of the budget bill being passed and seemingly restoring funding for the parks that’s been cut. It’s just a political maneuver to make this administration look like it has to solutions to problems that it has created. Keep calling and speaking out.

Mesa Verde is in the southwestern corner of Colorado was constructed throughout the thirteenth century by cliff-dwelling Ancestral Puebloans. Cliff Palace, which is the largest cliff-dwelling in North America, is believed to have sustained a population of about 100 people until a drought lasting longer than two decades forced relocation. Mesa Verde is still thought to inhabit the spirits of the ancestors of the Pueblo. @visitmesaverde @mesaverdefoundation

Here we go, again. Year after year they deliver. Tiny but vivacious.

Martín en el Teatro San Martín

To go from the shining white granite of Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra to the glowing red rocks of Utah is a bit of a culture shock, but one that I was really looking forward to on this trip. Finally got to visit @cedarbreaksnps and loved every second- especially the fact that Bristlecone Pines are growing along the rim of the amphitheater, putting two of my favorite elements of two of my favorite national parks in conversation with each other- the hoodoos of Bryce and the Bristlecones of Great Basin. Cedar Breaks is a gem.

#Allpubliclandsmatter! Zion is celebrating an anniversary today and it wouldn’t be if it didn’t achieve National Monument status before it ever became a National Park. 116 years of grandeur, no matter what the designation is!

I don’t think I’ve ever experienced anything quite like Antelope Canyon X. Walking around there almost felt sacrilegious, as if such a beautiful place deserved to be totally left alone and natural, and far from human involvement, even if we took great care to respect the environment. The stone walls of the canyon, despite being only carved by the powerful forces of erosion feel so delicate and artful. I felt drawn to be cautious wherever I was in the canyon for fear of disturbing the amazing forms and textures found in front of me. This formation in the rocks is called The Lady in Red. No matter what you see in the rocks, a visit here is sublime. My thanks to @canyon_x_tours for an amazing experience.

Across Utah and Arizona, you are in the Navajo Nation. In Navajo, sacred land is referred to as Diné Bikéyah. This land belongs to the people. Hopitutskwa, Pueblos, and Núu-agha-tʉvʉ-pʉ̱ (Ute) land is also found across these two states and at archeological sites and natural sites. It is an honor to see them.

Monument Valley isn’t just the iconic landscape of the American Southwest across history and pop culture, it is still a living and breathing and active community within the Navajo Nation- Tsé Bii’ Ndzisgaii, or Valley of Rocks.Traveling through this region is not akin to traveling through a National Park- you are often very close to homes and the patterns of everyday life in the Navajo Nation. Mindfulness of the privilege of being here is the way to go.

Enjoying a night by the beach, with the waves crashing and the setting milky way shining bright above. My headlamp caught the movement of the ocean, but it’s the #stars that really made this moment unforgettable.

Happy #worldphotographyday from one of the most strange and special places I’ve ever been: Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument’s Great Chamber. Officially part of a geological structure called Cutler Point, The Great Chamber is an open sandstone dome with a tall sand hill at its center, created by wind blasting away at the sandstone walls and carving the dome out of the mountain. The Great Chamber makes you work for the iconic shot- it’s a 25 mile drive from Kanab, Utah, mostly on backcountry roads that require a 4x4. And then, when you’re there, the trail from the road to the dome is steep but short- and all sand. Deep sand. And sandstone. But still, even as I emerged from the trail, exhausted, and having to sit down and rest before I even attempted to capture the beauty, I knew it was worth it. Those first few moments of just trying to catch my breath in The Great Chamber, even before I squeezed off a single shot, made me drink in the beauty of the place and be thankful that photography had gotten me to go to such a wild place.

I think I finally got a picture of these trees that I’m happy with.

I see them nearly every time I’m in The Everglades.

I take a picture every time.

The trees are partially obscured by the sawgrass from the road and they always face into or away from the sun. Nightmare.

This weekend was different.

The Toadstools of Grand

Staircase, just outside of Kanab, Utah is geological wonderland; one where not the forces of the Earth carved the landscape but Salvador Dali, himself, had a hand in crafting this bizarre symphony of stone.

Traveling through a slot canyon is an exercise in light and texture. Most times, the light is muted and soft and ethereal, causing the whole environment to glow and be uniform. But other moments, where the walls either recede or extend in dramatic fashion, bend the light and throw perspective into sharp relief. That’s what you’re seeing here. Peekaboo Canyon is a delight.

After months of fierce training, competition, and struggle…the best day of the year is finally here. Today’s the day where we see what champions are made of. Where the rubber meets the road. Where I continue to make sports analogies without real purpose because forget sports, IT’S SUPERB OWL SUNDAY!

Thrilled and proud and humbled that this shot made Honorable Mention in this year's Everglades Photo Contest!

White Sands has colors beyond compare. For a place with “white” in its name, White Sands is so much more about every vibrant color it possesses than the absence of color, as its name would suggest. The sand is merely a canvas for light and refracted color as the sun makes its journey through the sky.

Months later, and I'm still thinking about this perfect purple sunset above Redding Peak and Lassen Volcanic National Park.

Lassen is a gem of remote and quiet solitude and offers the superlatives that a collection of other national parks boast. From the Yellowstone, to Rainier, to Petrified Forest, to Craters of the Moon… all of those amazing features can be found here. And when you put them all in conversation with each other, Lassen is a symphony of delight. The result is music.

Some places and some songs just go well together:

Maybe the season /

The colors change in the valley skies /

Dear God, I've sealed my fate /

Running through Hell, Heaven can wait /

Long road to ruin there in your eyes /

Under the cold streetlights /

No tomorrow, no dead end in sight - foo fighters

Tumacácori National Historic Park. Unit no. 122 for me. Always sobering to see the remnants of colonialism and conversion.

️- tumacacori National Historic Park, as described by the NPS: Tumacácori sits at a cultural crossroads in the Santa Cruz River valley. Here O’odham, Yaqui, and Apache people met and mingled with European Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries, settlers, and soldiers, sometimes in conflict and sometimes in cooperation.

Page is a wonderland of geologic beauty, across a collection of Native Lands, Private Lands, and Public Lands. Glen Canyon National Recreation Area was my 100th National Park unit in 2021, when I was last in Utah to see Zion and Bryce. The lake itself also is a peaceful place to take in the sunset and the water. All of Colorado Plateau is a joy.
