Oil on water is one of the first subjects that everyone should try out when they get a macro lens. We have been having fun making some amazing abstract shots using this method, you can see how in our latest video >>> youtu.be/mixLIIQ5N00
It's a super simple setup that can get some colourful and creative shots right out of the gate. We have spent many hours taking shot after shot of swirling oil and water mixtures to get some amazing varied results.
All it takes is a shallow glass bowl, some oil, water and a colourful backdrop. Using the Adaptalux Studio and our Colour Filters, we were able to change the colours and gradients behind the oil with ease, getting hundreds of unique shots really quickly.
If you are looking for a new macro subject to try out, definitely give this a go. The colourful abstract shots can make for some great desktop backgrounds. If you're into video, the motion of the water is really pleasing to capture if you have the right lighting.

Everyone has coins lying around at home (less so as we all move towards paying with plastic!). We have something special though, you can check it out in this week's video here - youtu.be/DHB8ZojzTWE
You may notice that this is not your average one cent coin. In fact, we went shopping at fellow kickstarter creator Chris Ovdiyenko's store Dead on Paper. We grabbed two different "Hobo coins" to experiment with including the "Davy Jones Locker" that you see here.
Using the Adaptalux Studio, we were able to get an accurate shot of the coin before experimenting with coloured Lighting Arms to add highlights. Picking out the details of the design can sometimes be an interesting lighting challenge, so we made use of diffusers and direct light in the various shots we took.
For the reflective surface, we used an iPad! The screen actually offers a great shooting surface if you want a reflection of the subject, and the iPad is just the right size for a subject like this. If you don't have a tablet lying around, some perspex will work too!
We have more details about the shoot, including more pics, on our blog here - bit.ly/AdaptaluxCoins
