Стрекозы являются одними из самых древних насекомых на Земле. Они появились приблизительно 350 миллионов лет назад. Удивительно, но со времени своего появления внешний вид стрекоз не изменился. Доказательством этому служат находки древних представителей этих насекомых в янтаре – застывшей смоле голосеменного растения гингко. Разве что в размерах они несколько уменьшились. Древние виды стрекоз, жившие в Каменноугольном периоде, имели размах крыльев порядка 70 см.
