Reading through this article about the benefits of Machine Learning,
www.datacamp.com/blog/what-is-machine-learning
I've learned that Machine Learning (ML) is a branch of artificial intelligence (AI) enabling AI to imitate the way that humans learn, gradually improving it's accuracy.
The following statement particularly caught my attention in the article:
'In the 21st century, data is the new oil, and machine learning is the engine that powers this data-driven world. It is a critical technology in today's digital age, and its importance cannot be overstated.'
I have also learned throughout the article the many ways machine learning is beneficial for me personally: it helps me to see what I'd like to see, shows me what I'd like to buy, listens to me, tracks my behaviour and feeds my mind it's daily dose of information.
And from there I can see the benefits of me being in a perfectly round digital world with all my favourite things and thoughts circulating around me, I just need make sure that no one will ever come close to me with their strange worlds and disturbing opinions, unless they want to see my existential fear being properly activated...
To be fair with the article, it does mention one actual benefit to humanity; it states that machine learning is used widely in health care. Google's DeepMind Health for example is working with doctors to build machine learning models to detect diseases earlier and improve patient care. And I would like to think that there are many other areas as well where the application of ML is implemented by goodwill and in faith of a better future for us, not driven by greed, power or any other sinister agendas.
I believe regardless of what is the original intent of creating a tool/machine/algorithm, once created, you will have the moral choice to use it and aim towards what's right, or to use it and aim towards what's wrong, or don't even care at all, just use the tool and see what happens, in any ways, there is always a price to pay.
We've yet to see what is the ultimate price to pay for releasing and so desperately trying to finalize an 'all knowing' machine god above us, and I can only hope that while we are still in control, human goodwill will always outweigh human greed, and we can still remain to be compassionate individual human beings seeing each other in the warm light of the sun, and not turning into some cold numbers on a blue screen as part of a soulless database.
...
I do understand the importance of science and economics, but I don't want to live in a 'data-driven' world...
I want to live in a love-driven world.
If only machines could 'deep learn' love, and mass generate it into the world... that I could call Progress.

"Artificial intelligence is about replacing human decision making with more sophisticated technologies" - Fagulni Desai.
“The term (political correctness) first appeared in Marxist-Leninist vocabulary following the Russian Revolution of 1917. At that time it was used to describe adherence to the policies and principles of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union (that is, the party line).” – Encyclopedia Britannica
The communists killed millions and millions of their people in order to create a utopian society based on equality. In communism, one must be “politically correct.” If you say something wrong you might disappear in the night, never to be seen again. Of course, self-censorship and voluntary compliance are preferred by the regime. Indoctrination keeps an individual within the proper ideological bounds of the state.
“Restriction of free thought and free speech is the most dangerous of all subversions. It is the one un-American act that could most easily defeat us.” – William Douglas
Many cannot recognize the threat of censorship, because they are ignorant of the crimes of communism. The public is more aware of the atrocities of the Nazis, as opposed to the atrocities of the communists. This is what happens when universities are bastions of Marxism, and professors are fond of Karl Marx. (Karl Marx and Frederick Engels wrote The Communist Manifesto). My grandpa, who went through the Great Depression, used to say, “People go to university to become socialists.” So this stuff is nothing new! This is what leftists call the “long march through the institutions.” The plan was to infiltrate the institutions of the West in order to transform them from the inside out. The Long March of the 1960s sowed the doctrines of critical theory (neo-Marxism). (Critical theory came out of the Frankfurt School). These seeds produced various kinds of critical theory: critical race theory, queer theory, postcolonial/decolonial theory, feminist theory, critical environmental theory, and critical pedagogy. Our children are being taught these subversive ideologies, even though they are rooted in evil. The fruits of these ideologies have produced mass death and misery. They gave us Stalin’s Great Purges and Mao’s Great Leap Forward. Indeed, the communists regulated speech, and millions died.
“Censorship reflects a society’s lack of confidence in itself. It is a hallmark of an authoritarian regime.” – Potter Stewart
Regulating hate speech is undemocratic; it is rooted in totalitarianism. Regulating hate speech is a way of enforcing the politically correct doctrine of the day. It suppresses free speech, and it suppresses open dialogue. It suppresses critical thinking, and it suppresses creativity. And it will eventually lead to the criminalization of ideological opposition.
“Misinformation, disinformation, hate speech and other risks to the information ecosystem are fueling conflict, threatening democracy and human rights, and undermining public health and climate action.” – United Nations
The West is losing its freedom of speech. People in England are being arrested for social media posts. In Germany, they are trying to ban a political party. We saw Western governments colluding with big tech to censor dissenting views during COVID-19. Various politicians want to fight misinformation and disinformation. The European Union also wants to crackdown on what it deems as misinformation and disinformation. What they are doing, however, is fighting against freedom of speech—against freedom.
“The proliferation of misinformation and disinformation threatens to erode the credibility of public institutions and limit their capacity to implement policies that enhance public well-being.” – World Bank
When central bank digital currencies and social credit scores are implemented, you better watch what you say or do. If you say or do the wrong thing, you will have your money frozen. You will be like the Canadian truckers, who had their bank accounts frozen during COVID-19. With quantum computing, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, machine learning, and data-driven technologies, a surveillance apparatus is being built. This Beast system will be an authoritarian dystopia like the world has never known.
“In this case wisdom is needed: Let the person who has understanding calculate the total number of the beast, because it is a human total number, and the sum of the number is 666.” – Revelation 13:18
This is a photo of my relative, Ella Schoen, age 13, taken in 1904. I had a macular hole affecting central vision in my left eye. Through photo editing software, I created an image of the visual distortions (metamorphosia) that I saw. Objects also appeared smaller than actual (micropsia). Peripheral (side) vision was unaffected. The final photo is my eyesight 9 months post-vitrectomy surgery – objects lean to the right, appear slightly thinner than actual and there is still a small round distortion/loss around the very center of my vision (I am looking directly between her eyes). My eyesight continues to improve, though I now also have a very common surgically-induced cataract.
I recently fell, resulting in a traumatic brain injury. Immediately following the fall, I noticed distorted vision in my right eye and will be undergoing vitrectomy surgery due to a macular hole for that eye as well (only 10-15 percent of patients have bilateral macular holes, having the condition in both eyes).
Sharing because I could find no good visualizations of what it is like to have a macular hole. Please feel free to use it for educational/editorial, modeling or machine learning purposes.

A close encounter.
One of four birds present.
Some people are now using noise reduction applications in post processing eg. NoNoise AI or DeNoise AI. These programs are not simply finding hidden details already existing “behind” the noise and enhancing them. Simplified, the software is reading your photo, comparing it to its massive data library compiled from machine learning to recognize what something should look like, and then replaces the original artifacts with clean textures and details based on its photo-driven libraries.
In a sense, it can be argued that the final edited images from AI noise reduction software are composites, with areas of the image replaced by the software. I would argue that these images do not reflect the original capture at all.
Chacun a son gout!
Melancholy actress. More AI art, this time from Midjourney, coupled with another AI image editing program, Luminar Neo. Is it art? Who made it? At this point I am but a reporter, using words and knobs and someone else's machine learning. Text prompt: actress 45 smoking sitting in chair melancholy mirror wine crossing legs chair.
We need a new world-culture, a global synthesis of interconnectedness and global consciousness. We need a global citizenship movement that will promote social justice and social transformation. We must fight for fundamental human rights, over all national law and cultural identity—there must be equality for everyone! Global citizens are not born; they are created through social engineering. Children, you lack a global perspective on shared humanity, but we will indoctrinate you over time. Since you are part of this cult, you must help bridge the gap and rectify all misinformation. Remember, we global citizens are New World Order ambassadors. We must not only reflect on the virtues of globalism, but we must also act on them. As we reeducate the sheep, we must live a lifestyle of activism. True leaders are global citizens, whether they are CEOs, prime ministers, or just like you: Children of the Corn (Children of the Beast).
The number one (propaganda) issue that underscores our interconnectedness is climate change. The earth depends on our collective stewardship, which transcends all geopolitical borders and economies. One of our most important duties is to protect and enforce our global(ist) compacts. The health of the planet and society depends on useful idiots like us to lead the charge.
Smart cities are the engines of global control. They are full of opportunities, which we’ll exploit. This is a classic case of global multidimensionalism, which not only involves all facets of life, but is also omnipresent (The internet is borderless, and so is globalization). The most successful city is a smart city, because it’s interconnected globally. It reaches to the corners of the earth through smart technologies like the Internet of things, Artificial Intelligence, and Machine Learning. Now we are faced with a secular humanist phenomenology and a new age cosmology in which we must develop new and efficient methodologies. This paradigm shift is in perfect alignment with the values of global citizenship.
Take the jab, take the Mark. Be a sheep, awaken the dark. Bow the knee, bow in submission. Worship the Beast, son of perdition.
Children of the Corn—deeply rooted, widespread. Children of the Beast—tares uprooted, twice dead.
Matthew 24:4 “Then Jesus replied to them: ‘Watch out that no one deceives you.’”
My kid has birthday recently so we took him and his guests to play laser tag - a less messy kind of paintball. Players get that gear strapped onto their back and then start running around a labyrinth shooting at each other with laser pointers, basically. What better way to celebrate a new year in one's life than to make believe massacre each other? ;) Anyways, they sure did have fun.
Thank you everyone for your visits, faves and comments, they are always appreciated :)
We use automated means for systematic computational analysis of wrongthink data and statistics. We surf the data ecosystem with machine learning classifiers, looking for content of wrongthink. When we track it down, we measure its effectiveness. Once its narratives are diagnosed, we analytically target the data and run it through our narrative richness classifier—our machine learning algorithm. We’ve trained it to identify content that is representative of wrongthink. Our algorithm has learned the characteristics that perpetuate wrongthink. In the information ecosystem we must use manipulation to win the hearts and minds of the people. Therefore we are constructing a periodic table of social systems, in which we can categorize groups of wrongthink offenders. With this table we will gain an understanding of these groups. Then we will be able to understand their reactions and interactions with conspiracy theory wrongthink. We can’t have free thinking, critical thinkers, who can think for themselves. So we must control the information—the narrative. We use media narratives and entertainment to persuade, engage, and mobilize the masses. Like the devil, we twist the truth to suit our narratives. We use technology to manipulate you—Techno-Manipulation. We will tell you what is fact and what is misinformation. If you are one of the wrongthink revolutionaries, we will eventually censor and deperson you. One day you will wakeup and find yourself in a global mass Techno-Surveillance police state, where your every move will be monitored and analyzed in real time. Eventually, if you are found guilty of wrongthink hate crimes, you will be sent to a reeducation camp. If, however, you refuse to reform, you will be sentenced to death. Off with your head, you wrongthink terrorist! We must stamp out terrorism (critical thinking)! Exterminate the useless thinkers/eaters—bring on another holocaust! Welcome to the Techno-Dark Ages—the Techno-World Order—where you will take the Techno-Mark (666) and worship the Techno-Beast (Image of the Beast). Techno-Deindividuation and Techno- Eugenics: boy, the transhuman (666) future looks bright! Techno-Dystopia and the Internet of Bodies, here we come! Join the Fourth Industrial Revolution, join the Fourth Reich, follow the Führer! Give the Antichrist salute. Hail Beast! Hail Satan!
Daniel 7:7 “Then in my vision that night, I saw a fourth beast—terrifying, dreadful, and very strong. It devoured and crushed its victims with huge iron teeth and trampled their remains beneath its feet. It was different from any of the other beasts, and it had ten horns.”

As countries undemocratically move towards implementing their New World Order goals of a net zero future, urban areas will evolve into smart ghettos. We’ll transform this world into one big community of Agenda 21 smart cities. We’ll use community-led initiatives to make Personal Carbon Allowance Programs palatable and socially acceptable to the sheep. We’ll promote an authoritarian system for tracking your carbon emissions. The levers of mass formation psychosis will be much more impactful through global citizen re-education programs. There has been much advancement in Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies such as AI and machine-learning. These technologies will play a key role in tracking your lifestyle emissions, so that you can make ethical decisions. AI will monitor your consumer habits by using your historical and real time data, providing recommendations for your needs. AI will provide an in-depth analyzes on the choices you make for food, transport, and utilities. Energy efficiency apps will provide statistics about your lifestyle emissions, helping you to reduce your consumer-related footprint. Awareness of your home energy consumption will help you change your lifestyle, thus you can do your part in saving the planet. Eventually AI will control every aspect of your life. It will plan out your days. It will control how long you sleep and what you eat. It will control your home utilities. We must be willing to change how we live and work, so that we can combat the effects of geoengeneered climate change. For a greener tomorrow we must lower our lifestyle emissions. We must lower our expectations and become a lifestyle emissions slave. Climate crisis rationing, do your part to save the earth! You are nothing but bottom feeders, carbon polluters! Our plan is not only to depopulate the earth but to replace humanity with human-machine hybrids. It’s for the greater good of the planet! You will be deemed obsolete, because you aren’t part of a sustainable future—net zero human-machine hybrids are the future. Survival of the fittest—Outwit, Outplay, Outlast!
You’ll be a digital slave in a digital gulag, socially engineered and controlled by a Social Credit Score System. Smart ID’s-smart currency. Hello world! Hello facial recognition and biometrics! Hello surveillance society! The future definitely doesn’t look dystopian, now does it!?! Smart cities-to smart homes-to smart people (transhumans). Smart chip-smart people-controlled sheep. “Disaster will be inescapable, as if a man ran from a lion only to meet a bear, then escaped into a house, leaned his hand against the wall, and was bitten by a poisonous snake.”
Since the globalists are possessed by the spirit of antichrist, they are paving the way for the eventually reign of the Antichrist.
David Spangler: “We do not want another committee, we have too many already. What we want is a man of sufficient stature to hold the allegiance of all the people and to lift us up out of the economic morass into which we are sinking. Send us such a man, and whether he be God or devil, we will receive him.”
If you take the Mark (666) your mind will be changed from that of a man, to that of the Beast, till seven times pass by for him. Seven will be the Dragons years. The Beast will say, “Is this not Babylon the Great, which I myself have built by the might of my power as a royal residence and for the glory of my majesty?” However, a proclamation will be made: “Fallen, fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a dwelling place for demons, a haunt for every unclean spirit, a haunt for every unclean bird, a haunt for every unclean and detestable beast.” Then the handwriting will be on the wall:
“God has numbered the days of your reign and has brought it to an end.”
“You have been weighed on the balances and have not measured up.”
Your kingdom has been given to another.
“And I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and the One seated on it was called ‘Faithful’ and ‘True,’ and with justice He judges and makes war.” “And the Beast was seized, and with him the False Prophet who performed the signs before him, by which he deceived those who received the Mark of the Beast and those who had worshiped his Image. The two were thrown alive into the lake of fire that burns with sulphur.” “In the time of those kings, the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed, nor will it be left to another people. It will crush all those kingdoms and bring them to an end, but it will itself endure forever.” “Whoever has ears, let them hear.”

More Victorian erotica in which mythology provides all the excuse the artist needs for nudity. Original greyscale version here.
This is a photo of a painting I found online and applied the usual cleanups to before upscaling with Bigjpg AI Image Enlarger. and colorized using DeepAI Image Colorization API. (These are not paid endorsements, but if they're interested they may feel free to contact me.)
The colorization needed a bit of work, and if you look carefully you can see where I've digitally "repainted" a few patches, but I think the final result looks great.
Having previously been confused by the artist's signature, I believe it may belong to Georges Landelle, a French artist with very little biographical data online except the dates bearing witness to a tragically short life.
However, I've only come across a couple of Landelle's paintings, neither of them nudes; one of them had a clear signature, but it didn't look much like the one on this painting. For this reason, the attribution must remain conjectural in the absence of further proof.
In the Ars Electronica Center's Machine Learning Studio visitors can use computer vision and machine learning applications to discover how machines learn and perceive their environment. Working with tech trainers, they can build and train self-driving model cars here, program robots with facial recognition, and gain insights into how they can teach these devices a wide variety of activities. Step-by-step, they can experience not only how these technologies function, but also that everything the machines know is determined by us.

Congratulations to Intel on their acquisition of Nervana. This photo is from the last board meeting at our offices; the Nervana founders — from right to left: Naveen Rao, Amir Khosrowshahi and Arjun Bansal — pondered where on the wall they may fall during M&A negotiations.
We are now free to share some of our perspectives on the company and its mission to accelerate the future with custom chips for deep learning.
I’ll share a recap of the Nervana story, from an investor’s perspective, and try to explain why machine learning is of fundamental importance to every business over time. In short, I think the application of iterative algorithms (e.g., machine learning, directed evolution, generative design) to build complex systems is the most powerful advance in engineering since the Scientific Method. Machine learning allows us to build software solutions that exceed human understanding, and shows us how AI can innervate every industry.
By crude analogy, Nervana is recapitulating the evolutionary history of the human brain within computing — moving from the logical constructs of the reptilian brain to the cortical constructs of the human brain, with massive arrays of distributed memory and iterative learning algorithms.
Not surprisingly, the founders integrated experiences in neuroscience, distributed computing, and networking — a delightful mélange for tackling cognitive computing. Ali Partovi, an advisor to Nervana, introduced us to the company.
We were impressed with the founding team and we had a prepared mind to share their enthusiasm for the future of deep learning. Part of that prepared mind dates back to 1989, when I started a PhD in EE focusing on how to accelerate neural networks by mapping them to parallel processing computers. Fast forward 25 years, and the nomenclature has shifted to machine learning and the deep learning subset, and I chose it as the top tech trend of 2013 at the Churchill Club VC debate (video). We were also seeing the powerful application of deep learning and directed evolution across our portfolio, from molecular design to image recognition to cancer research to autonomous driving.
All of these companies were deploying these simulated neural networks on traditional compute clusters. Some were realizing huge advantages by porting their code to GPUs; these specialized processors originally designed for rapid rendering of computer graphics have many more computational cores than a traditional CPU, a baby step toward a cortical architecture. I first saw them being used for cortical simulations in 2007. But by the time of Nervana’s founding in 2014, some (e.g., Microsoft’s and Google’s search teams) were exploring FPGA chips for their even finer-grained arrays of customizable logic blocks. Custom silicon that could scale beyond any of these approaches seemed like the natural next step. Here is a page from Nervana’s original business plan (Fig. 1 in comments below).
The march to specialized silicon, from CPU to GPU to FPGA to ASIC, had played out similarly for Bitcoin miners, with each step toward specialized silicon obsoleting the predecessors. When we spoke to Amazon, Google, Baidu, and Microsoft in our due diligence, we found a much broader application of deep learning within these companies than we could have imagined prior, from product positioning to supply chain management.
Machine learning is central to almost everything that Google does. And through that lens, their acquisition, and new product strategies make sense; they are not traditional product line extensions, but a process expansion of machine leaning (more on that later). They are not just playing games of Go for the fun of it. Recently, Google switched their core search algorithms to deep learning, and they used Deep Mind to cut data center cooling costs by a whopping 40%.
The advances in deep learning are domain independent. Google can hire and acquire talent and delight in their passionate pursuit of game playing or robotics. These efforts help Google build a better brain. The brain can learn many things. It is like a newborn human; it has the capacity to learn any of the languages of the world, but based on training exposure, it will only learn a few. Similarly, a synthetic neural network can learn many things.
Google can let the Brain team find cats on the Internet and play a great game of Go. The process advances they make in building a better brain (or in this case, a better learning machine) can then be turned to ad matching, a task that does not inspire the best and the brightest to come work for Google.
The domain independence of deep learning has profound implications on labor markets and business strategy. The locus of learning shifts from end products to the process of their creation. Artifact engineering becomes more like parenting than programming. But more on that later; back to the Nervana story.
Our investment thesis for the Series A revolved around some universal tenets: a great group of people pursuing a product vision unlike anything we had seen before. The semiconductor sector was not crowded with investor interest. AI was not yet on many venture firms’ sectors of interest. We also shared with the team that we could envision secondary benefits from discovering the customers. Learning about the cutting edge of deep learning applications and the startups exploring the frontiers of the unknown held a certain appeal for me. And sure enough, there were patterns in customer interest, from an early flurry in medical imaging of all kinds to a recent explosion of interest in the automotive sector after Tesla’s Autopilot feature went live. The auto industry collectively rushed to catch up.
Soon after we led the Series A on August 8, 2014, I found myself moderating a deep learning panel at Stanford with Nervana CEO Naveen Rao.
I opened with an introduction to deep learning and why it has exploded in the past four years (video primer). I ended with some common patterns in the power and inscrutability of artifacts built with iterative algorithms. We see this in biology, cellular automata, genetic programming, machine learning and neural networks.
There is no mathematical shortcut for the decomposition of a neural network or genetic program, no way to “reverse evolve” with the ease that we can reverse engineer the artifacts of purposeful design.
The beauty of compounding iterative algorithms — evolution, fractals, organic growth, art — derives from their irreducibility. (More from my Google Tech Talk and MIT Tech Review)
Year 1. 2015
Nervana adds remarkable engineering talent, a key strategy of the first mover. One of the engineers figures out how to rework the undocumented firmware of NVIDIA GPUs so that they run deep learning algorithms faster than off-the-shelf GPUs or anything else Facebook could find. Matt Ocko preempted the second venture round of the company, and he brought the collective learning of the Data Collective to the board.
Year 2. 2016 Happy 2nd Birthday Nervana!
The company is heads down on chip development. They share some technical details (flexpoint arithmetic optimized for matrix multiplies and 32GB of stacked 3D memory on chip) that gives them 55 trillion operations per second on their forthcoming chip, and multiple high-speed interconnects (as typically seen in the networking industry) for ganging a matrix of chips together into unprecedented compute fabrics. 10x made manifest. See Fig. 2 below.
And then Intel came knocking.
With the most advanced production fab in the world and a healthy desire to regain the mantle of leading the future of Moore’s Law, the combination was hard to resist. Intel vice president Jason Waxman told Recode that the shift to artificial intelligence could dwarf the move to cloud computing. “I firmly believe this is not only the next wave but something that will dwarf the last wave.” But we had to put on our wizard hats to negotiate with giants.
The deep learning and AI sector have heated up in labor markets to relatively unprecedented levels. Large companies are recently paying $6–10 million per engineer for talent acquisitions, and $4–5M per head for pre-product startups still in academia. For the Masters students in a certain Stanford lab, they averaged $500K/yr for their first job offer at graduation. We witnessed an academic turn down a million dollar signing bonus because they got a better offer.
Why so hot?
The deep learning techniques, while relatively easy to learn, are quite foreign to traditional engineering modalities. It takes a different mindset and a relaxation of the presumption of control. The practitioners are like magi, sequestered from the rest of a typical engineering process. The artifacts of their creation are isolated blocks of functionality defined by their interfaces. They are like blocks of magic handed to other parts of a traditional organization. (This carries over to the customers too; just about any product that you experience in the next five years that seems like magic will almost certainly be built by these algorithms).
And remember that these “brain builders” could join any industry. They can ply their trade in any domain. When we were building the deep learning team at Human Longevity Inc. (HLI), we hired the engineering lead from the Google’s Translate team. Franz Och pioneered Google’s better-than-human translation service not by studying linguistics, grammar, or even speaking the languages being translated. He focused on building the brain that could learn the job from countless documents already translated by humans (UN transcripts in particular). When he came to HLI, he cared about the mission, but knew nothing about cancer and the genome. The learning machines can find the complex patterns across the genome. In short, the deep learning expertise is fungible, and there are a burgeoning number of companies hiring and competing across industry lines.
And it is an ever-widening set of industries undergoing transformation, from automotive to agriculture, healthcare to financial services. We saw this explosion in the Nervana customer pipeline. And we see it across the DFJ portfolio, especially in our newer investments. Here are some examples:
• Learning chemistry and drug discovery: Here is a visualization of the search space of candidates for a treatment for Ebola; it generated the lead molecule for animal trials. Atomwise summarizes: “When we examine different neurons on the network we see something new: AtomNet has learned to recognize essential chemical groups like hydrogen bonding, aromaticity, and single-bonded carbons. Critically, no human ever taught AtomNet the building blocks of organic chemistry. AtomNet discovered them itself by studying vast quantities of target and ligand data. The patterns it independently observed are so foundational that medicinal chemists often think about them, and they are studied in academic courses. Put simply, AtomNet is teaching itself college chemistry.”
• Designing new microbial life for better materials: Zymergen uses machine learning to predict the combination of genetic modifications that will optimize product yield for their customers. They are amassing one of the largest data sets about microbial design and performance, which enables them to train machine learning algorithms that make search predictions with increasing precision. Genomatica had great success in pathway optimization using directed evolution, a physical variant of an iterative optimization algorithm.
• Discovery and change detection in satellite imagery: Planet and Mapbox. Planet is now producing so much imagery that humans can’t actually look at each picture it takes. Soon, they will image every meter of the Earth every day. From a few training examples, a convolutional neural net can find similar examples globally — like all new housing starts, all depleted reservoirs, all current deforestation, or car counts for all retail parking lots.
• Automated driving & robotics: Tesla, Zoox, SpaceX, Rethink Robotics, etc.
• Visual classification: From e-commerce to drones to security cameras and more. Imagen is using deep learning to radically improve medical image analysis, starting with radiology.
• Cybersecurity: When protecting endpoint computing & IOT devices from the most advanced cyberthreats, AI-powered Cylance is proving to be a far superior and adaptive approach versus older signature-based antivirus solutions.
• Financial risk assessment: Avant and Prosper use machine learning to improve credit verification and merge traditional and non-traditional data sources during the underwriting process.
• And now for something completely different: quantum computing. For a wormhole peek into the near future, our quantum computing company, D-Wave Systems, powered a 100,000,000x speedup in a demonstration benchmark for Google, a company that has used D-Wave quantum computers for over a decade now on machine learning applications.
So where will this take us?
Neural networks had their early success in speech recognition in the 90’s. In 2012, the deep learning variant dominated the ImageNet competitions, and visual processing can now be better done by machine than human in many domains (like pathology, radiology and other medical image classification tasks). DARPA has research programs to do better than a dog’s nose in olfaction.
We are starting the development of our artificial brains in the sensory cortex, much like an infant coming into the world. Even within these systems, like vision, the deep learning network starts with similar low level constructs (like edge-detection) as foundations for higher level constructs like facial forms, and ultimately, finding cats on the internet with self-taught learning.
But the artificial brains need not limit themselves to the human senses. With the internet of things, we are creating a sensory nervous system on the planet, with countless sensors and data collecting proliferating across the planet. All of this “big data” would be a big headache but for machine learning to find patterns in it all and make it actionable. So, not only are we transcending human intelligence with multitudes of dedicated intelligences, we are transcending our sensory perception.
And it need not stop there. It is precisely by these iterative algorithms that human intelligence arose from primitive antecedents. While biological evolution was slow, it provides an existence proof of the process, now vastly accelerated in the artificial domain. It shifts the debate from the realm of the possible to the likely timeline ahead.
Let me end with the closing chapter in Danny Hillis’ CS book The Pattern on the Stone: “We will not engineer an artificial intelligence; rather we will set up the right conditions under which an intelligence can emerge. The greatest achievement of our technology may well be creation of tools that allow us to go beyond engineering — that allow us to create more than we can understand.”

Google is an American multinational technology company focusing on search engine technology, online advertising, cloud computing, computer software, quantum computing, e-commerce, artificial intelligence,[9] and consumer electronics. It has been referred to as "the most powerful company in the world"[10] and one of the world's most valuable brands due to its market dominance, data collection, and technological advantages in the area of artificial intelligence.[11][12][13] Its parent company Alphabet is considered one of the Big Five American information technology companies, alongside Amazon, Apple, Meta, and Microsoft.
Google was founded on September 4, 1998, by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were PhD students at Stanford University in California. Together they own about 14% of its publicly listed shares and control 56% of the stockholder voting power through super-voting stock. The company went public via an initial public offering (IPO) in 2004. In 2015, Google was reorganized as a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc. Google is Alphabet's largest subsidiary and is a holding company for Alphabet's Internet properties and interests. Sundar Pichai was appointed CEO of Google on October 24, 2015, replacing Larry Page, who became the CEO of Alphabet. On December 3, 2019, Pichai also became the CEO of Alphabet.[14]
The company has since rapidly grown to offer a multitude of products and services beyond Google Search, many of which hold dominant market positions. These products address a wide range of use cases, including email (Gmail), navigation (Waze & Maps), cloud computing (Cloud), web browsing (Chrome), video sharing (YouTube), productivity (Workspace), operating systems (Android), cloud storage (Drive), language translation (Translate), photo storage (Photos), video calling (Meet), smart home (Nest), smartphones (Pixel), wearable technology (Pixel Watch & Fitbit), music streaming (YouTube Music), video on demand (YouTube TV), artificial intelligence (Google Assistant), machine learning APIs (TensorFlow), AI chips (TPU), and more. Discontinued Google products include gaming (Stadia), Glass,[citation needed] Google+, Reader, Play Music, Nexus, Hangouts, and Inbox by Gmail.[15][16]
Google's other ventures outside of Internet services and consumer electronics include quantum computing (Sycamore), self-driving cars (Waymo, formerly the Google Self-Driving Car Project), smart cities (Sidewalk Labs), and transformer models (Google Brain).[17]
Google and YouTube are the two most visited websites worldwide followed by Facebook and Twitter. Google is also the largest search engine, mapping and navigation application, email provider, office suite, video sharing platform, photo and cloud storage provider, mobile operating system, web browser, ML framework, and AI virtual assistant provider in the world as measured by market share. On the list of most valuable brands, Google is ranked second by Forbes[18] and fourth by Interbrand.[19] It has received significant criticism involving issues such as privacy concerns, tax avoidance, censorship, search neutrality, antitrust and abuse of its monopoly position.
In March 1999, the company moved its offices to Palo Alto, California,[52] which is home to several prominent Silicon Valley technology start-ups.[53] The next year, Google began selling advertisements associated with search keywords against Page and Brin's initial opposition toward an advertising-funded search engine.[54][22] To maintain an uncluttered page design, advertisements were solely text-based.[55] In June 2000, it was announced that Google would become the default search engine provider for Yahoo!, one of the most popular websites at the time, replacing Inktomi.
In 2003, after outgrowing two other locations, the company leased an office complex from Silicon Graphics, at 1600 Amphitheatre Parkway in Mountain View, California.[59] The complex became known as the Googleplex, a play on the word googolplex, the number one followed by a googol zeroes. Three years later, Google bought the property from SGI for $319 million.[60] By that time, the name "Google" had found its way into everyday language, causing the verb "google" to be added to the Merriam-Webster Collegiate Dictionary and the Oxford English Dictionary, denoted as: "to use the Google search engine to obtain information on the Internet".[61][62] The first use of the verb on television appeared in an October 2002 episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.[63]
Additionally, in 2001 Google's investors felt the need to have a strong internal management, and they agreed to hire Eric Schmidt as the chairman and CEO of Google.[49] Eric was proposed by John Doerr from Kleiner Perkins. He had been trying to find a CEO that Sergey and Larry would accept for several months, but they rejected several candidates because they wanted to retain control over the company. Michael Moritz from Sequoia Capital at one point even menaced requesting Google to immediately pay back Sequoia's $12.5m investment if they did not fulfill their promise to hire a chief executive office, which had been made verbally during investment negotiations. Eric wasn't initially enthusiastic about joining Google either, as the company's full potential hadn't yet been widely recognized at the time, and as he was occupied with his responsibilities at Novell where he was CEO. As part of him joining, Eric agreed to buy $1 million of Google preferred stocks as a way to show his commitment and to provide funds Google needed.
Google generates most of its revenues from advertising. This includes sales of apps, purchases made in-app, digital content products on Google and YouTube, Android and licensing and service fees, including fees received for Google Cloud offerings. Forty-six percent of this profit was from clicks (cost per clicks), amounting to US$109,652 million in 2017. This includes three principal methods, namely AdMob, AdSense (such as AdSense for Content, AdSense for Search, etc.) and DoubleClick AdExchange.
In addition to its own algorithms for understanding search requests, Google uses technology its acquisition of DoubleClick, to project user interest and target advertising to the search context and the user history.
In 2007, Google launched "AdSense for Mobile", taking advantage of the emerging mobile advertising market.
Google Analytics allows website owners to track where and how people use their website, for example by examining click rates for all the links on a page. Google advertisements can be placed on third-party websites in a two-part program. Google Ads allows advertisers to display their advertisements in the Google content network, through a cost-per-click scheme.[138] The sister service, Google AdSense, allows website owners to display these advertisements on their website and earn money every time ads are clicked.[139] One of the criticisms of this program is the possibility of click fraud, which occurs when a person or automated script clicks on advertisements without being interested in the product, causing the advertiser to pay money to Google unduly. Industry reports in 2006 claimed that approximately 14 to 20 percent of clicks were fraudulent or invalid.[140] Google Search Console (rebranded from Google Webmaster Tools in May 2015) allows webmasters to check the sitemap, crawl rate, and for security issues of their websites, as well as optimize their website's visibility.

On September 24, 2012, Google launched Google for Entrepreneurs, a largely not-for-profit business incubator providing startups with co-working spaces known as Campuses, with assistance to startup founders that may include workshops, conferences, and mentorships. Presently, there are seven Campus locations: Berlin, London, Madrid, Seoul, São Paulo, Tel Aviv, and Warsaw.
On March 15, 2016, Google announced the introduction of Google Analytics 360 Suite, "a set of integrated data and marketing analytics products, designed specifically for the needs of enterprise-class marketers" which can be integrated with BigQuery on the Google Cloud Platform. Among other things, the suite is designed to help "enterprise class marketers" "see the complete customer journey", generate "useful insights", and "deliver engaging experiences to the right people". Jack Marshall of The Wall Street Journal wrote that the suite competes with existing marketing cloud offerings by companies including Adobe, Oracle, Salesforce, and IBM.
Internet services
In February 2010, Google announced the Google Fiber project, with experimental plans to build an ultra-high-speed broadband network for 50,000 to 500,000 customers in one or more American cities.[178][179] Following Google's corporate restructure to make Alphabet Inc. its parent company, Google Fiber was moved to Alphabet's Access division.[180][181]
In April 2015, Google announced Project Fi, a mobile virtual network operator, that combines Wi-Fi and cellular networks from different telecommunication providers in an effort to enable seamless connectivity and fast Internet signal.
Facebook is an online social media and social networking service owned by American company Meta Platforms. Founded in 2004 by Mark Zuckerberg with fellow Harvard College students and roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes, its name comes from the face book directories often given to American university students. Membership was initially limited to Harvard students, gradually expanding to other North American universities and, since 2006, anyone over 13 years old. As of July 2022, Facebook claimed 2.93 billion monthly active users,[6] and ranked third worldwide among the most visited websites as of July 2022.[7] It was the most downloaded mobile app of the 2010s.[8]
Facebook can be accessed from devices with Internet connectivity, such as personal computers, tablets and smartphones. After registering, users can create a profile revealing information about themselves. They can post text, photos and multimedia which are shared with any other users who have agreed to be their "friend" or, with different privacy settings, publicly. Users can also communicate directly with each other with Facebook Messenger, join common-interest groups, and receive notifications on the activities of their Facebook friends and the pages they follow.
The subject of numerous controversies, Facebook has often been criticized over issues such as user privacy (as with the Cambridge Analytica data scandal), political manipulation (as with the 2016 U.S. elections) and mass surveillance.[9] Posts originating from the Facebook page of Breitbart News, a media organization previously affiliated with Cambridge Analytica,[10] are currently among the most widely shared political content on Facebook.[11][12][13][14][15] Facebook has also been subject to criticism over psychological effects such as addiction and low self-esteem, and various controversies over content such as fake news, conspiracy theories, copyright infringement, and hate speech.
Zuckerberg built a website called "Facemash" in 2003 while attending Harvard University. The site was comparable to Hot or Not and used "photos compiled from the online face books of nine Houses, placing two next to each other at a time and asking users to choose the "hotter" person". Facemash attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 photo-views in its first four hours. The site was sent to several campus group listservs, but was shut down a few days later by Harvard administration. Zuckerberg faced expulsion and was charged with breaching security, violating copyrights and violating individual privacy. Ultimately, the charges were dropped. Zuckerberg expanded on this project that semester by creating a social study tool. He uploaded art images, each accompanied by a comments section, to a website he shared with his classmates.
A "face book" is a student directory featuring photos and personal information. In 2003, Harvard had only a paper version[ along with private online directories. Zuckerberg told The Harvard Crimson, "Everyone's been talking a lot about a universal face book within Harvard. ... I think it's kind of silly that it would take the University a couple of years to get around to it. I can do it better than they can, and I can do it in a week."[29] In January 2004, Zuckerberg coded a new website, known as "TheFacebook", inspired by a Crimson editorial about Facemash, stating, "It is clear that the technology needed to create a centralized Website is readily available ... the benefits are many." Zuckerberg met with Harvard student Eduardo Saverin, and each of them agreed to invest $1,000 ($1,435 in 2021 dollars[30]) in the site.[31] On February 4, 2004, Zuckerberg launched "TheFacebook", originally located at thefacebook.com.
Six days after the site launched, Harvard seniors Cameron Winklevoss, Tyler Winklevoss, and Divya Narendra accused Zuckerberg of intentionally misleading them into believing that he would help them build a social network called HarvardConnection.com. They claimed that he was instead using their ideas to build a competing product. The three complained to the Crimson and the newspaper began an investigation. They later sued Zuckerberg, settling in 2008 for 1.2 million shares (worth $300 million ($354 million in 2021 dollars[30]) at Facebook's IPO).
Membership was initially restricted to students of Harvard College. Within a month, more than half the undergraduates had registered.[36] Dustin Moskovitz, Andrew McCollum, and Chris Hughes joined Zuckerberg to help manage the growth of the website.[37] In March 2004, Facebook expanded to Columbia, Stanford and Yale.[38] It then became available to all Ivy League colleges, Boston University, NYU, MIT, and successively most universities in the United States and Canada.
In mid-2004, Napster co-founder and entrepreneur Sean Parker—an informal advisor to Zuckerberg—became company president.[41] In June 2004, the company moved to Palo Alto, California.[42] It received its first investment later that month from PayPal co-founder Peter Thiel. In 2005, the company dropped "the" from its name after purchasing the domain name Facebook.com for US$200,000 ($277,492 in 2021 dollars). The domain had belonged to AboutFace Corporation.
In May 2005, Accel Partners invested $12.7 million ($17.6 million in 2021 dollars) in Facebook, and Jim Breyer added $1 million ($1.39 million in 2021 dollars) of his own money. A high-school version of the site launched in September 2005. Eligibility expanded to include employees of several companies, including Apple Inc. and Microsoft.
Facebook was sued by the Federal Trade Commission as well as a coalition of several states for illegal monopolization and antitrust. The FTC and states sought the courts to force Facebook to sell its subsidiaries WhatsApp and Instagram.[183][184] The suits were dismissed by a federal judge on June 28, 2021, who stated that there was not enough evidence brought in the suit to determine Facebook to be a monopoly at this point, though allowed the FTC to amend its case to include additional evidence. In its amended filings in August 2021, the FTC asserted that Facebook had been a monopoly in the area of personal social networks since 2011, distinguishing Facebook's activities from social media services like TikTok that broadcast content without necessarily limiting that message to intended recipients.
In response to the proposed bill in the Australian Parliament for a News Media Bargaining Code, on February 17, 2021, Facebook blocked Australian users from sharing or viewing news content on its platform, as well as pages of some government, community, union, charity, political, and emergency services.[187] The Australian government strongly criticised the move, saying it demonstrated the "immense market power of these digital social giants".
On February 22, Facebook said it reached an agreement with the Australian government that would see news returning to Australian users in the coming days. As part of this agreement, Facebook and Google can avoid the News Media Bargaining Code adopted on February 25 if they "reach a commercial bargain with a news business outside the Code".
Facebook has been accused of removing and shadow banning content that spoke either in favor of protesting Indian farmers or against Narendra Modi's government. India-based employees of Facebook are at risk of arrest.
On February 27, 2021, Facebook announced Facebook BARS app for rappers.
On June 29, 2021, Facebook announced Bulletin, a platform for independent writers.[197][198] Unlike competitors such as Substack, Facebook would not take a cut of subscription fees of writers using that platform upon its launch, like Malcolm Gladwell and Mitch Albom. According to The Washington Post technology writer Will Oremus, the move was criticized by those who viewed it as an tactic intended by Facebook to force those competitors out of business.
In October 2021, owner Facebook, Inc. changed its company name to Meta Platforms, Inc., or simply "Meta", as it shifts its focus to building the "metaverse". This change does not affect the name of the Facebook social networking service itself, instead being similar to the creation of Alphabet as Google's parent company in 2015.
In November 2021, Facebook stated it would stop targeting ads based on data related to health, race, ethnicity, political beliefs, religion and sexual orientation. The change will occur in January and will affect all apps owned by Meta Platforms.
In February 2022, Facebook's daily active users dropped for the first time in its 18-year history. According to Facebook's parent Meta, DAUs dropped to 1.929 billion in the three months ending in December, down from 1.930 billion the previous quarter. Furthermore, the company warned that revenue growth would slow due to competition from TikTok and YouTube, as well as advertisers cutting back on spending.
Analysts predict a "death spiral" for facebook stock as users leave while ad impressions increase, as the company chases revenue.
On March 10, 2022, Facebook announced that it will temporarily ease rules to allow violent speech against 'Russian invaders'. Russia then banned all Meta services, including Instagram.
