Aerial view of the MacArthur Maze, the freeway interchange just east of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. This interchange, which links Interstates 80, 580, and 880, was originally built in the 1930's and was called the "Distribution Structure". It's a major east/west and north/south hub of traffic in the Bay Area.
This interchange has suffered some dramatic mishaps over the years, the most tragic being the collapse of the Cypress Structure and loss of 42 lives during the 1989 Loma Prieta Eathquake.
I avoid this interchange like the plague during rush hour, but find it very convenient to use it when traffic is light.

Visible in the background are the MacArthur Maze (freeway interchange) and the Oakland skyline.
That's Temescal Creek draining into the bay from under the freeway at the left side of the frame. The birds seem to like the creek's outflow for some reason.
There is an active abatement program here, which uses aquatic herbicides, to control Spartina, an invasive non-native cordgrass. Spartina species can interfere with the ability of wildlife such as shore birds and the endangered salt marsh harvest mouse to flourish on the edge of San Francisco Bay.

COLLAPSE OF HIGHWAY 580 OVERPASS IN THE MACARTHUR MAZE, Oakland, CA -- Early this morning a massive chunk of a 580 Eastbound overpass collapsed. The collapse was caused by an oil tanker truck that exploded underneath the 580 overpass. The heat from the truck weakened the 580 Overpass causing the overpass to collapse down crushing the truck.
The driver of the truck reportedly was not killed but was taken to the hospital. It is estimated that this disaster will affect East Bay and Bay Bridge traffic, an already extremely congested area, for months.
