Bend in the river Maas near Givet, France.
The Meuse river enters the Netherlands near Maastricht, becoming the Maas river. It flows north to the city of Nijmegen where it sweeps west and parallels the Waal river; they join at Hollands Diep and flow to the North Sea. Short sections of the Maas at its western end are named Bergsche Maas and Amer river.
Limburgse Maas is the section between the cities of Maastricht and Nijmegen. It is non-navigable from Maastricht to Maasbracht, bypassed by the Julianakanaal; fifty kilometers of tight curves on the natural Maas are bypassed by the 35km straight-line canal. West of the city of Nijmegen the Maas-Waalkanaal connects the two rivers at the point where the Maas turns to the west.
Kanaal van St Andries, just 2.1km long, connects the Waal with the Maas at the point where their natural paths almost touch. A popular connection is the Andelse Maas, which strikes north from Heusden and leads to Gorinchem, with stopping points along the way.
The current in the Maas has been somewhat tamed by a lock at the Belgian border, a bypass canal (Julianakanaal) with three locks and another five locks on the Maas between Roermond and Kanaal van St Andries.

TRUON (70 m lang) fährt voll beladen gegen den Strom der Maas Richtung Roermond. Das Schiff wirkte auf mich etwas verloren in der weiten Wasserfläche, die das Hochwasser gebildet hatte....

Winterliche Temperaturen und eine ungewohnte Ruhe auf der Maas bei Gennep (Nordlimburg/NL). Auf den Wegen im Bereich der alten Festung 't Genneperhuis waren jedoch viele Spaziergänger und Radfahrer bei angenehmem Winterwetter unterwegs. Hier mündet die vom Niederrhein kommende Niers in die Maas.

An dieser Stelle bei Gennep (NL) mündet die Niers in die Maas bei derzeit hohem Wasserstand.
Die Niers ist der Fluss des linken Niederrheins, der parallel zwischen Rhein und Maas verläuft. Die letzten 8 von 118 Kilometern sind auf niederländischem Gebiet. In Sichtweite liegen die historischen Reste der Festung Genneperhuis.

Uitzicht vanaf de Erasmusbrug over de Nieuwe Maas naar het haven gebied van Rotterdam
De Nieuwe Maas is de rivier waaraan de steden Rotterdam, Schiedam en Vlaardingen zijn gelegen. De rivier ontstaat ter hoogte van Slikkerveer uit de samenvloeiing van de Lek en de Noord en eindigt 24 kilometer westelijker bij Vlaardingen, vanwaar zij samengaat met de Oude Maas en via het Scheur en ten slotte vanaf de Maeslantkering via de Nieuwe Waterweg verder naar de Noordzee stroomt. De voornaamste zijrivier is de Hollandse IJssel die zich 4 kilometer van het begin, ter hoogte van Kralingseveer, bij de Nieuwe Maas voegt. Westelijker zijn er de Rotte en de Schie.

The Nieuwe Maas is the river to which the cities of Rotterdam, Schiedam and Vlaardingen are situated. The river rises at Svkerveer from the confluence of the Lek and the North and ends 24 kilometers west of Vlaardingen, from which it joins the Oude Maas and via the Tear and finally flows from the Maeslantkering via the Nieuwe Waterweg to the North Sea . The main tributary is the Dutch IJssel which adds 4 kilometers from the beginning, at the level of Kralingseveer, to the Nieuwe Maas. More generally there are the Rat and the Schie.

Am derzeit zum Verkauf stehenden Hotel/Restaurant De Hamert mündet der Geldernsch Nierskanaal in die limburgische Maas, die an diesem Montag Hochwasser führte. In Verbindung mit dem Nachmittagsnebel eine nicht sooft anzutreffende Sicht...

Der Maas-Niederrheinpfad oder Maas-Niederrheinpad - abgekürzt MNp - ist ein ca. 340 km langer regionaler Wanderweg am linken Niederrhein zwischen Maas - Niers - Schwalm - Nette und den Naturgebieten Meinweg - Maasduinen - Reichswald links und rechts der deutsch-niederländischen Grenze. Mittelpunkt dieser Wanderschleife mit Querverbindungen ist Venlo (NL). Im Bild ist eine winterliche Teilstrecke in der Bruchlandschaft am Naturgebiet Zwart Water bei Venlo - Straelen.
Der rot-gelben Wandermarkierung kann man nach unserer Erfahrung unbesehen folgen, auch wenn wir nur einige Teilstücke kennen.
