Red horse-chestnut, a cross between horse-chestnut and red buckeye, is an excellent shade tree for large areas. Its distinctive, rose-red, cone-shaped flower clusters bloom in May among the lustrous, dark green leaves.

A close-up of “Tiger’s Eye”, a gem/semi-precious stone from South Africa.

Tiger’s Eye has a silky lustrous look derived from its many parallel and wavy threads of minerals visible in this macro shot.

The fibres are originally composed of crocidolite, a form of asbestos**. During later stages of formation or subsequent heating they convert to quartz of the same shape. Iron minerals stain the stone with reds and yellows. The darker and bluish areas have incomplete replacement of crocidolite by quartz (Hawk’s Eye). Strong iron staining also gives dark bands.

A radiant sunrise in Austin, Texas

One of my favourite flowers

Ranunculus is a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants in the family Ranunculace. Members of the genus include the buttercups, spearworts and water crowfoots. The petals are often highly lustrous, especially in yellow species, owing to a special coloration mechanism: the petal's upper surface is very smooth causing a mirror-like reflection. The flash aids in attracting pollinating insects and temperature regulation of the flower's reproductive organs.
