A minute (body length 2–3 mm.) lustrous black fly with a round abdomen Body length 2–3 mm. Brilliant black. Eyes black and green. Proboscis brown. Antennae brown (male), red (apical half slightly yellow in female). Halteres brown.

The habitat is deciduous woodland, on tree leaves, and bark (Linden, pine, alder, poplar), on hedge foliage. Larvae have been found in decomposed elm wood, garden compost heaps, decaying vegetation and leaf litter. The flight period is from June to August.

One of my favourite flowers

Ranunculus is a genus of about 500 species of flowering plants in the family Ranunculace. Members of the genus include the buttercups, spearworts and water crowfoots. The petals are often highly lustrous, especially in yellow species, owing to a special coloration mechanism: the petal's upper surface is very smooth causing a mirror-like reflection. The flash aids in attracting pollinating insects and temperature regulation of the flower's reproductive organs.

Please excuse the over poetic title! However, there is, I think, an essence of mythology in the image that justifies a poetic title. It's a photo of Coombes Brook within the RSPB Coombes Valley Nature Reserve taken late December as the sun was setting. At the point where the river drops very slightly the red setting sun cast a glow across the surface of the water that looked so lovely and mysterious.

The thing is though, when I reviewed the image at home the colour cast of the sun that I saw in real life was hardly there but I decided to work with the image anyway for an edit. As part of the process I decided to add a cooling filter to give it a bit more of a winter feel and as I opened the filters a warming filter was added by default and guess what? - the original cast of the sun suddenly re-appeared - it was recorded by the camera after all, just needed waking up - so, I learnt something new on the day I edited this!

So there it was, a lustrous, gorgeous copper cast from the sun, which really added to the mythology - and hence the title. (phew)
