Black Bear that was just passing by.

Many viewers have commented that The Guardian Building (originally The Union Trust Company Building) reminded them of a church.

This picture shows approximately half of the bank lobby on the main floor. Imagine the original bank building with 60-90 bank teller cages lining the entire length of both sides of this "nave". The ceiling was composed of a 3/4 inch (1.9cm) of horsehair and coated with a layer of plaster cement. Then, a canvas layer was applied, and painted with designs reminiscent of the patterns of Navajo rugs. This was a sound-deadening system.

The "altar piece" ( I suppose) was the three-story mural of the map of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Highlighted were the major Michigan moneymakers of the1890s to 1920s: mining, manufacturing, lumber, fishing, commerce, and agriculture. It was completed in 1929, unfortunately the year of the beginning of "The Great Depression".

This superbly decorated Art-Deco bank building was nicknamed "The Cathedral of Finance." So, if the earlier pictures reminded you of a church (reprised in the first comment below) --you were very observant : -)

... like crossing through time, as you enter the dark, with the rumble of lumber beneath the car, and the bright as you exit ...

Dalkena, WA, grew up around a lumber mill built in 1902. A fire in 1935 burned all but 2 of the 40 buildings that made up the town and mill. This barn is the only remaining original building. A newer church and a few homes, plus the barn, make up what remains of the town of Dalkena. Of interest, this barn was also used for town dances and other gatherings.

This Nissan certainly looks like it should be on the road. Other than a rusty hood the body looks in good shape. It has really nice mismatched tires. There is no license plate on the front, so it is not being used, except on private property. This house is not located on a farm, so I imagine this truck is just parked here in the yard. I find it interesting that someone with a flatbed truck chooses to haul his lumber in the cab. Does anyone have an idea on the age of this truck? HTT

We went for a hike again and it was wonderful. The forest is so cool and soothing.

Milling planks the ancient ways, with steam. This sawmill is using steam power to cut logs into planks. Attached by a twisted drive band to the engine, the loggers keep the wood hard-pressed against the cutting guides whilst the saw does its job. With smoke, steam and sawdust filling the air, and the ragged sound of wood cutting accompanied by the repetitive chough of the engine, this really is quite something to watch.

Rio Grande forest products train No. 146 follows the path of the Price River, approaching Lynn, Utah the evening of Aug. 16, 1987. Leading the charge are two GP40-2s, two SD40T-2s, and a single SD50. DRGW 146 will pause in seven miles and swap crews at the depot in Helper, Utah.

A tree had fallen across the trail and was cut to allow hikers and bikers to get by. It looks like the forest crew was in a good mood that day as they cut a smiley face into the log with a chainsaw. A fun way to leave a mark while cleaning up.

Bulls and cows alike are required to put reproduction on the front burner for a short period of time. It is during the rut that bulls may burn off as much as thirty percent of their accumulated body fat herding and breeding, leaving them in a severely energy depleted state going into winter. This bull was so tired he was just lumbering through.

St. Louis Southwestern GP60 No. 9661, an EMD GP60 demonstrator, and an SP B30-7 pull a 50-car Eugene, Oregon to Chicago, Illinois forest products train through Riverton, Utah the evening of Aug. 19, 1994. You can bet your bottom dollar this 5,624 ton train had a helper engine added at Castilla for the steep ascent to Soldier Summit.

With SP run through power, Rio Grande train No. 194 pulls through Roy, Utah at 56th South on Union Pacific's Salt Lake Subdivision.

A single GP40M-2 switches out the Hagle lumber yard on local freight LOF63. This crew works most of the remaining carload freight customers in and around Oxnard. The 1533 is a former MKT GP40, rebuilt to a GP40M-2 by the SP in the early 90s.

While driving around Pilsen I happened in to the BNSF local on the remaining stub of the Lumber District. They brought some additional empty gondolas over to Sims Metals on Paulina and then switched Domino Sugar. 7/3/23. I was hoping to grab a shot of the train out on the short stub still in place on Cermak (a short distance behind the engine in this shot), but they only dropped off three empty gons here rather than pull the whole string out.

Went to the Illinois Railway Museum (IRM) where our friend engineered the Shay #5 Steam Locomotive.

Built in 1929 by the Lima Locomotive Works it was put in service by J. Neils Lumber Company logging the Northwest. Restored in 2018 at the IRM.

The IRM is a great place with lots of old trains. Well worth a visit! I'll post more pix later

The Lumber Exchange Building was the first skyscraper built in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, dating to 1885. It was designed in the Richardsonian Romanesque style by Franklin B. Long and Frederick Kees and was billed as one of the first fireproof buildings in the country. It is the oldest high-rise building standing in Minneapolis, and is the oldest building outside of New York City with 12 or more floors.

I like this large truck. One man can deliver all this lumber to a job because he carries his own fork lift with him.

I’m not tooting my own horn, but notice that I caught the tie down in mid-air. A little stop action. Soon I will be able to progress to turtles crossing the road or to ducks swimming in the river.

Happy Truck Thursday!

Southern Pacific’s EUCHQ was a crowd pleaser for those who enjoyed a drag freight. It was basically a bulk forest products train, running between Eugene, Oregon and Chicago, Illinois. The EUCHQ was routed via the now abandoned Modoc and the mothballed Tennessee Pass Subdivision. A new face leads today’s train, rumbling through a Provo, Utah the afternoon of Sept. 5, 1994.

After a trip to CN's Southwark yard to interchange, a heavy St. Lawrence and Atlantic train mainly laden with propane and lumber heads east through mile 108 of the Sherbrooke subdivision behind half a dozen EMD products. On the right is the former approach signal to Ste-Rosalie. SLR and CN rail is now split with a short stretch of rule 105 track.

When I look at this image, I can hear the sounds of the city as if they were present in the room with me. I can hear the #17 lumber its way up the street and a car horn blare just out of fame. I can feel the warm sun in the chill air and smell the freshly baked bread still warm from the oven. I can feel the vibe of the city and it feels alive.

I love this city. Thank you for having me.
