I did not edit my hair, just the parts around me.

Looking toward Knickerbocker Village and South St. on this light snowy day.

from the archives.

my favorite part of this photo is near the lamppost where you can see the shadows reflecting onto the sidewalk. I love that!

Lower East Side, New York City.

Hush.

"Hush's work has been described as a sensory assault of shape, color, and character. Inspired by the portrayal of the female form in art, the artist builds up and tears down layers of paint and images as he works, "letting the canvas and marks take their own path." The result is an enigmatic synthesis of anime, pop-infused imagery and graffiti that exposes the conflict between power and decay, innocence and sexuality, and the fusion of Eastern and Western culture. Hush continues to evolve his style with this latest batch of pieces, which merges his early anime and pop-art influenced graffiti technique with an exploration of Romanesque iconographic imagery. The new works are bigger, deeper and richer than anything he has produced to date. About the Artist: Hush is stimulated, influenced and driven by his cross cultural experiences. Having originally trained as a graphic designer and illustrator at Newcastle School of Art and Design, his work has taken him across Asia and Europe, whilst simultaneously developing his prominence as a contemporary artist. Hush now resides in the UK painting in his studio daily."

Katz's Delicatessen on the Lower East Side was established in 1888.

Katz's is famous for its Jewish deli foods including its famous hot pastrami and corned beef sandwiches (swipe left for 2nd photo) and its hot dogs. A ticket is given upon entering, which serves as a bill that must be handed in when leaving. Their slogan "Send a Salami to Your Boy in the Army" started during World War II. Our exterior photo from 2008 and interview with the long-time manager (whose uncle was one of the owners), Robert Albinder appears in our book “Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York”.

Delancey St. Hustle 11/14/17

Continuing our week celebrating Jewish-owned NYC businesses in honor of Hanukkah which is being celebrated this week, we are highlighting Gertel’s Bakery in the Lower East Side. This #Jewish bakery was owned by Abe Stern and specialized in homemade rugelach, challah bread, and hamantaschen. Sadly, the bakery was forced to close when the building was sold to a developer who knocked it down to build a luxury eight-story condo. Not visible in this photo was their overhanging #neon sign (swipe left for 2nd photo) which luckily was saved and moved to their wholesale business in Brooklyn. We also wished that this great #handpainted #signage with the #script lettering was also saved. Photo from 2004 taken with 35mm film appears in our book, "Store Front: The Disappearing Face of New York".
