The ‘low’ greenhouse gas emissions garden represents an example garden from the 2050s, a hundred years on from the Heritage garden. To achieve the ‘low’ emissions level reflected in this future garden, a far higher standard of worldwide environmental care is needed than is currently the case. Energy technology and social change would play an important role in preventing emissions from reaching the higher levels of the high emissions garden. Nevertheless, the low emissions future has higher global emissions than today.
Garden climate
Both the lowest winter and highest summer average temperatures have increased by over one degree Celsius from today. The growing season will lengthen with fewer cold spring and autumn nights. Spring sowing can take place slightly earlier, and plants can be grown successfully later into the autumn. There will be less soil moisture under climate change because of increased temperatures causing increased evaporation.
Gardening practices
Mulch and ground cover plants are used to help conserve the soil moisture. Higher temperatures means important changes for gardeners, such as the need to increase plant and greenhouse shading during the summer and better water conservation. The gardener is thinking about which plants to grow in a different climate compared to the past.
Garden planting
The garden shows a range of plants which are already grown in some UK gardens, but often need a sheltered position and some protection through the colder months. These plants would thrive without winter protection under the ‘low’ emissions future.
Strong sculptural plants featured here are Cupressus sempervirens, Acacia dealbata, Loquat (Eriobotrya japonica) and the European fan palm (Chamaerops humilis).

Fire/Rescue staff train for low-visibility search and rescue on Friday, January 13, 2023. To simulate low visibility experienced during active structure fires, plastic wrap is placed inside SCBA masks, stressing team communication and touch-only techniques to navigate complex structures.
Earlier this year I was part of a project that involved working with street involved youth teaching and critiquing photography. One of our group took a photo of this bridge from underneath and it really captured me. So this Canada Day I found myself under this bridge on my way to watch fireworks and decided to take my own photo of it from this perspective. So this is for Cory because he inspired me.

From my piano series, this shot is looking down at the bottom end of the strings below the keyboard. These are the low notes. The strings are fat and long. They are paired until the notes get really low, then they are single strings.
During the middle of the Islamic lunar month, the tide goes out all the way. Many people enjoy beach combing or hunting for crabs that are prevalent (trapped!) in the shallow waters.
