Die Sirenen besassen eine ganz besondere Gabe, nämlich in eine sehr verführerische Art und Weise zu singen. Jeder Seemann, der bei dieser Insel vorbeifuhr wurde von ihrer Stimme verzaubert und dazu verurteilt, in ihre Insel für immer zu bleiben und dort auch zu sterben. Überall auf der Insel der Faiakes gab es Knochen von Seeleuten, die nicht imstande waren, der göttlichen Melodie der Sirenen zu widerstehen. Doch Odysseus war gut vorbereitet, so dass er rechtzeitig seine Begleiter darum bat, ihre Ohren mit Wachs zu decken, ihn dann stark in das Boot zu binden und ihn auf gar keinem Fall zu befreien. Auf diese Weise war der Held Odysseus in der Lage, der Versuchung zu entgehen und seine lange Reise nach Ithaka fortzusetzen.
