Zweihundert Jahre nach der Französischen Revolution sollte der Louvre nach den Wünschen des französischen Staatspräsidenten François Mitterrand seiner eigentlichen Bestimmung als „universales Lyzeum“ übergeben werden. Dies sollte ein weiteres seiner „Großen Projekte“ werden, die einen Beitrag zur kulturellen Renaissance Frankreichs liefern sollten. Seine Idee war es, den Palast aus dem 13. Jahrhundert in das größte Museum der Welt umzuwandeln. Dafür sollte ein neuer Eingang mit einer unterirdischen Halle gebaut werden, der bisherige Ministeriumsflügel entkernt sowie Tiefgaragen angelegt werden. Mitterrand erteilte für das Gesamtvorhaben dem berühmten chinesisch-amerikanischen Architekten Ieoh Ming Pei einen Direktauftrag.
Die Pyramide war anfänglich heftig umstritten und provozierte den Spott der Kritiker, die behaupteten, Mitterrand habe hier die Grabkammer der Sozialisten errichten lassen. Auf Vorwürfe gegen die Form, die mit Grabstätten assoziiert wird, erwiderte Pei:
„Die Form ist älter als alle ägyptischen Modelle. Außerdem ist sie dort aus Stein und schwer, ein Werk für die Toten. Meine Pyramide ist leicht, ist Leben.“
Mitterrand eröffnete die Glaspyramide am 29. März 1989. Nach diesem ersten Bauabschnitt folgte ein weiterer Ausbau des Museumskomplexes.
Two hundred years after the French Revolution, the Louvre, according to the wishes of French President François Mitterrand, was to be given over to its proper purpose as a "universal lyceum". This should be another of his "big projects" that should contribute to France's cultural renaissance. His idea was to turn the 13th-century palace into the largest museum in the world. For this purpose, a new entrance with an underground hall was to be built, the previous ministry wing gutted and underground car parks created. Mitterrand placed a direct order with the famous Chinese-American architect Ieoh Ming Pei for the overall project.
The pyramid was initially heavily controversial and provoked the ridicule of the critics who claimed that Mitterrand had built here the burial chamber of the Socialists. On reproaches against the form associated with tombs, Pei replied:
"The shape is older than any Egyptian models. In addition, it is made of stone and heavy, a work for the dead. My pyramid is light, it's life. "
Mitterrand opened the glass pyramid on March 29, 1989. After this first construction phase, a further expansion of the museum complex followed.

Das vom französischen Archtikten Jean Nouvel entworfenene Gebäude ist ein Kunstmuseum auf der Insel Saadiyat, Abu Dhabi. Der Name leitet sich vom Louvre Paris ab, mit dem eine enge Zusammenarbeit besteht.
The Louvre, in its successive architectural metamorphoses, has dominated central Paris since the late 12th century. Built on the city's western edge, the original structure was gradually engulfed as the city grew. The dark fortress of the early days was transformed into the modernized dwelling of François I and, later, the sumptuous palace of the Sun King, Louis XIV. Here we explore the history of this extraordinary edifice and of the museum that has occupied it since 1793.
