The bombed-out shell of Sarajevo’s Vijećnica — the iconic pseudo-Moorish town hall and former National Library of Bosnia and Herzegovina — stands here as both a brutal artifact of war and a potent symbol of cultural erasure. Captured during or shortly after the Siege of Sarajevo (1992–1996), this photo belongs to the visual language of warchitecture — the deliberate destruction of culturally significant architecture as an act of war.
Once the pride of Austro-Hungarian civic ambition and Balkan grandeur, Vijećnica was deliberately targeted and set ablaze by Serbian nationalist forces in 1992. Roughly 2 million books and irreplaceable manuscripts were lost in the fire, making the attack not just a military strategy, but a cultural one. This building’s skeletal frame — windows blown out, stonework scorched, and facade defaced — mirrors the collective trauma of a city under siege.
The unique pseudo-Moorish style, with its striped façade and ornamental crenellations, adds a bitter irony to the image. Once designed to showcase harmony through architectural multiculturalism — drawing from Islamic, Sephardic, and European influences — the building’s desecration instead became a haunting visual metaphor for ethnic division and cultural targeting.
Graffiti at the base of the building in the photo reads like fragmented political commentary, some of it emerging from the desperation of a city blockaded for years. Street lamps and wires dangle in disrepair, civilian infrastructure hanging on by a thread. The jagged skyline of the roofline, meant to evoke Islamic palatial forms, is pockmarked and incomplete. The shadows of soldiers and civilians once sheltered here seem to echo through every open window and hollowed floor.
This photograph is a quintessential example of warchitecture — a term coined during the wars in the former Yugoslavia to describe how cities became weaponized landscapes. Buildings were bombed not only for tactical advantage but to obliterate identity, memory, and community. The architectural scars visible here are both literal and symbolic.
Vijećnica has since been rebuilt and reopened in 2014, but photos like this one are crucial for understanding the cost of cultural warfare. They remind us that war does not merely kill people — it also targets what those people build, preserve, and revere. In that sense, this image is both documentation and testimony.
Whether viewed through the lens of historical tragedy or architectural resilience, this is a photo that demands reflection. It holds space for mourning, but also for memory — for the bricks, books, and beliefs that war tried to erase but could not.
Lost Knowledge
As I walk through the door a familiar scent greets me in the doorway. The smell of Pinesol cleaner fills the air and the scent are so intoxicating. I am used to that smell for I am here almost everyday off my life since I started working at this place. Nothing had change and still the same smell of Pinesol. One thing though is missing, the old woman who sit by the window and look outside. She is not there, where is she? She always greets me with a smile even though she won’t say anything. She just smiles and then looks away. Where is she, I seem to have missed her smile. I was just gone for a day.
Hi Ava, you’re back. We miss you. Thank you I said and proceed to ask, “Where is Ms. Coleman?” I was saddened to hear she had passed away the day before. I was very surprise when one of the staff said, “She left this for you, your name is on it”. For me I said, an old shoe box.
My mind was preoccupied with her and this old box. I opened the box as soon as I get home and was very surprised by its content. Old pictures and lots and lots of clipping. Her entire life in an old box and she shared it with me. I peruse through all the pictures and clippings and was astonished to find out that this old fragile woman was an accomplished scientist with numerous awards and publications. She dedicated her life in pursue of knowledge, a knowledge that she has nobody to share with. No one will know her life story, her struggle and her accomplishment. It will be forever Lost Knowledge.
