Today- 13 June 2008- is the Feast Day of Saint Anthony of Padua (1195-1231), one of the most beloved of saints, often called 'Saint of the Whole World', on account of the miracles that have come to those who have prayed for his intercession before God. Saint Anthony is also invoked for the recovery of lost things.
Born in Lisbon, Portugal in 1195, Anthony first entered the Canons Regular of St Augustine, but after ordination, joined the Friars Minor. He had exceptional talent as a preacher and was sent throughout Italy and France to preach against the Catharist heresy. He was the first theologian of the Franciscan Order; taking a vow of poverty to be closer to Christ.
It is said that when Anthony was praying in his room, the infant Jesus appeared to him, put His little arms around his neck and kissed him - because he had kept his soul free from even the smallest sin and because he loved Jesus very much. He is therefore often depicted cradling the infant Jesus.
St Anthony passed away on Friday 13 June 1231 in Padua, Italy. He was just 36 years of age.
" Today, Friday 13 June 2008, I awoke and on reading my prayers for strengthening I found that not only was it the Feast Day of St Anthony of Padua, 13 June - but also a Friday, the day the Saint died...777 years ago - I felt compelled - maybe 'called' - to make this tribute painting; with many prayers. I have always wished to paint a tribute to Saint Anthony of Padua - and thank God - & St Anthony- for enabling me to do this - with thanks: I have felt the help of this Saint in my life...I pray that more and more people will discover St Anthony - and that even doubters may turn to him, when lost or despairing, and find solace in the following prayer."
'Unfailing Prayer to Saint Anthony' :-
Saint Anthony, gentlest of Saints, your love for God and Charity for His creatures, made you worthy, when on earth, to possess miraculous powers.
Miracles waited on your word, which you were ready to speak for those in trouble or anxiety.
Encouraged by this thought, I ask you to obtain for me the favours that I seek ( here mention your request).
The answer to my prayer may require a miracle, even so, you are the Saint of Miracles.
O gentle and loving Saint Anthony, whose heart was full of sympathy, whisper my petition into the ears of the Infant Jesus, who loved to be held in your arms; and the gratitude of my heart will ever be yours.

Oil on canvas 24 x 18in
I took this shot earlier in the Fall and then forgot about it. There's a desktop folder on my laptop labeled "potentials" that I visit once in a while.
This lost glove was found on a hiking trail that I frequent and someone placed it on a branch in case the one who lost it passed by again. I like the textures and the blurred Fall colors in the background here.

Run all you want. She gets you in the end.
So many stories here. For me, I am reminded of all the optimism and drive of photographs and adverts I have seen for athletic shoes. All that drive, ambition, optimism and promise. In the end, no matter your level of success, this is what awaits you... and your shoes.
