Last night, I posted an image of two large Grizzly Bears (Ursus arctos horribilis) battling for breeding rights in the Khutzeymateen Grizzly Bear Reserve north of Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Canada.
As in most cases in wildlife cases involving the upper predatory species, the participants can suffer some serious wounds. In this case, the loser had a few major cuts and bruises but will in the future compete again.

"You know," he started, pausing to spit blood-laced saliva, "William S. Borroughs wrote that nobody owns a life, but anyone who can pick up a frying pan owns death." It mattered less that he was a sore loser. It mattered so much more that he tried to give the appearance of indifference, down to the forced tug of his lips into what failed to become a smirk. "Tell me. What does a man with a blade own?"

The isolation
A winter of discontent
Bent under a weight of guilt
The wind howls its low moan of sadness
The bark cracking with unhappiness and remorse
Even the sun’s sad peek through the clouds
Weirdly rocks no time together
They lost. It's not coming home.

With a wet spring and now summer too, water levels in the Great Lakes are higher then they have been in years. Great for sailors with deep keels but not so much for people with homes or cottages close to the water. Everything seems to have it's winners and losers.
This image is actually from last year, when water levels were already a bit higher. It's not often we see a sunset here with such a lavender hue.
