A carpet of Pinyon and Juniper woodland waits in the waning darkness for winter sunlight to warm the needles and bear witness to the dawn of a new year, Sedona, Arizona. If I could be bold enough to speak for the trees (like the Lorax), I suspect we humans are viewed as mobile nutrient packets with short-term perspectives.

Peace cannot be kept by force; it can only be achieved by understanding. - Albert Einstein
If you want to end the war then Instead of sending guns, send books. Instead of sending tanks, send pens. Instead of sending soldiers, send teachers. -
Malala Yousafzai (17 year-old Noble Peace Laureate)
To replace the old paradigm of war with a new paradigm of waging peace, we must be pioneers who can push the boundaries of human understanding. We must be doctors who can cure the virus of violence. We must be soldiers of peace who can do more than preach to the choir. And we must be artists who will make the world our masterpiece. - Paul Chappell
Thank you for your kind visit. Have a wonderful and beautiful day! xo💜💜
I've photographed this particular patch of common orange lichen (Xanthoria parietina) before. It used to cover a short twig like a human figure swathed in a fabulous gold gown. The bright yellow blob is easy to see from the bicycle path through the park during the winter, but when leaves cover the trees and tall weeds grow around it, I have trouble keeping track. Now the leaves have fallen. Today I visited my favourite lichen, and found the little figure had disappeared over the summer, probably broken by a passing squirrel. I think I'll christen that part of my daily rounds The Street of the Lifted Lorax. I was 7 when The Lorax was first published, and it has been my favourite Dr. Seuss book ever since.
Thank you to everyone who visits, faves, and comments.
Mouser thanks whoever cut this dead tree down and created this perfect perch for her. She sat there for hours. looking like a second Lorax [who, if you recall, popped out of a stump], while I tramped around taking pictures.
If you look close, she's sitting on evidence of what may have killed this tree. Just view large to see the work of bark beetles.

Lovell Canyon looks really great with all the white stuff. Reminds me of a scene from The Lorax movie. =)
Inspired very much by The Lorax, and the message that we need to take care of our home. The trees, the birds, the turtles, the polar bears and elephants.
I feel very connected to trees. Like in a way that feels that maybe I was one once. Or maybe that I will be one in the future. I look to them and see wisdom, I see strength and a steadfastness. How trees can be homes and provide food and give shelter and sometimes just be pretty things to look at.
I remember once, a favourite tree of mine fell down in a wind storm. I walked to it and ran my hand along the textured bark and it felt like an ancient giant had fallen. I broke a tiny stick off and put it in my backpack, and I still have it. Years later, the tree and me.

2nd place in the Association for Environmental and Outdoor Educators Spring 2008 Photocontest. Theme: Unless. (Think Dr. Seuss's Lorax).
Unless people start to care about the environment, nothing is going to get better. It's not. Children represent the future, and supporting their education in all fields is the biggest investment we can make in our future. If only politicians would understand that and stop the continuing budget cuts across schools nation wide.
It should be noted this picture was taken by a friend and colleague (Although Ironically I did the editing to clean it up a bit). There is a Sepia version in the photo preceding this one in my stream www.flickr.com/photos/j-fish/2450485476/in/photostream/

For Project Soul Pancake: Pint Sized Protest
Step 1: Find a couple of little people.
Step 2: Emblazon a tiny piece of paper with something you stand for.
Step 3: Stage your protest in a public sapce.
Step 4: Walk away and let the world hear your battle cry...or should we say whisper?
As soon as I saw the project for this week I immediately thought of The Lorax by Dr.Seuss. It seemed like the perfect match, especially considering just where this photo was taken. All I needed was a few minutes, some polymer clay and there was my lorax.
Most of my "forest" photos are taken in my town's community forest, a beautiful expanse of trees and lakes and endless nature. I'm on the board of directors for the governing society and every year we have to send a plea to the city and the provincial government to leave it just as it is. Not build roads right through it, not put houses in it...just leave it for everyone as a sanctuary. Someone's gotta speak for the trees, it might as well be me!

Chap still covered in pox and an exceptionally bad night for all (except for Little Lady remarkably!). He seems a bit chirpier this afternoon but I expect we're in for a night of broken sleep again.
This afternoon whilst Little Lady napped I started making the 25 superhero masks that I need for Chap's birthday party next weekend (spots depending!) and had my sewing bits out. This is my new Christmas pin cushion and some of my pins. I was looking at the photo afterwards and it reminded me of something, couldn't think what it was at all until Chap said that they looked like Truffula (or Truckula as he calls them) from The Lorax, one of our favourite films at the moment.
Had a nice surprise today as 2 of my photos have reached Explore this year already! So chuffed :)

I just love these trees and pair them with some star trails and it makes a surreal landscape that is not seen during the day.
we have a big protest here in BC ... now for one year to save the last of the old growth forests and so many arrests .. many moons ago we were out there to protest too..
. i see the protesters as heroes .... and lots of violence against them from the RCMP .. police .. why o why ??

My mom made the comment that my dog, Bebe, looked like the Lorax from Dr. Seuss. I could kind of see the resemblance.
On another note, thank you everyone for looking at my photos!
Kayley did an amazing job 'reading' to Erika. She knows this story well and knows the 'Dr. Seuss way' of rhyming verses etc...and putting it all together, I just HAD to take video!
i was listening to a program on alzheimers today and i got to thinking about ancestral memory and wondered if your dna can have alzheimers too. maybe the next generation will forget how to walk upright. actually, i don't think that's what ancestral memory means....i've been abusing the term for so long, i forget if i ever knew. anyway, this is sam in his barbaloot ears. his grade gave an astoundingly sweet performance of the lorax today in the gym. i cried! they put so much great effort into the art and costumes and dance and scenery. and at the end, they gave out a tiny sapling to every kid in the school! i'm kvelling here. go out and plant a tree (if the ground isn't rock hard) and don't forget to register to vote if you live in pennsylvania. sorry to blab.
The next image in my summer reading series with my amazing friend, Vanessa Powell. We're taking turns choosing quotes from our favourite children's stories and this week I chose this quote from "The Lorax":
'“I am the Lorax. I speak for the trees. I speak for the trees for the trees have no tongues.”
The lorax has always been one of my favourite stories and I feel a particular connection to it as I'm quite passionate about my favourite forest of trees and have done my share of protesting and protection of the trees that I love.
The Once-ler's house from Dr. Seuss' The Lorax.
This model was mostly designed and built by my girlfriend. I primarily played the role of technical adviser. There was a lot of 'I want to do this' from her and a lot of 'Well, you can't really do that, but you can do this or this' from me.
It is her first LEGO model, so there is a lot for her to learn about what pieces exist and what is possible. But is was really cool to see some of the things she came up with.
The fact that the movie is coming out next week is purely coincidental. We didn't even realize it was being released until a few days ago.

This is a sort of revisited version of this shot from last year. The My Face Is My Canvas group had selected Dr.Seuss characters as this week's emulation challenge and man was it ever a challenge! Those characters are all so iconic and not the easiest to incorporate into face paint (aside from the grinch which I've done too). I did try to do some fish for One Fish Two Fish, but they didn't turn out too well so you get The Lorax. pt 2!
I had my interview this morning for the Otesha article and I hope I was coherent enough, it was pretty early when they called since they're a few hours ahead and I wasn't totally prepared. It was pretty laid back and she asked some interesting questions and said that it should be out in the next week so I'll post a link when it pops up!
Hope you all have a great weekend!
