This photo was taken from the Pas des Arpettes (approx. 2511 m), a mountain pass in the Mercantour National Park. The foreground shows a rocky slope with scattered stones and tufts of alpine grass. A visible trail winds through the middle ground, leading into a wide valley. In the background, layers of mountain ridges stretch across the horizon, partially obscured by dramatic cloud formations. The terrain is typical of high-altitude alpine zones, with minimal vegetation and exposed geological features. The weather was dynamic at the time of capture, with shifting light and cloud cover adding depth to the scene

THIS is the last place we took my lovely son, Michel when he was here.

It was quiet, peaceful and calm, only the wind caressing your ears, strange little birds chirping and sheep blaring.

Michel seemed to come to rest from his all too busy life.

The three of us absorbed the epic surroundings, no words were needed.

I would like to say to you all, do not ever leave a loved one on a bad note, you NEVER know if you will meet again.

Due to circumstances, like a virus and lockdowns... this was the last time we hugged, when he left, and like usual, we told each other: I love you, take care.

He died on the 7th of July 2020.

Malham Moor and the surrounding area is wonderfully rich in natural history.

This wealth stems from the climate and the geology – the limestone laid down beneath ancient seas and capped by sandstone deposits, raised up, fractured by fault lines and scoured by glaciers to form the watershed of our modern rivers.

With love to you and thank you for ALL your faves and comments, M, (* _ *)

These beautiful hexagonal basalt rock columns are located next to the eastern dam of High Island Reservoir in Sai Kung, Hong Kong. There is an interesting “S” shaped pattern in the middle, which is quite unique. The "S" shaped section has been featured in the 2014 HK$ 1.7 postage stamp. The diameters of these columns range from 1.2 m to 3 m. The location is accessible from Man Yee Road.

This was taken close to noon on an overcast, rather dull day with my mobile phone set to panoramic mode.

Dry stone or loose stone walls are commonly used as field boundaries in the highlands, such as the Yorkshire Dales and the North York Moors.

A dry-stone wall is a wall that is made up of stones skill-fully placed one on top of the other with no binding agent to hold them together.

The wall is held up by a special construction method and by its own weight, and the stones must be carefully selected by shape to ensure that they have a large contact surface area with their neighbours and so do not slip.

Containing sheep in specific fields is the main reason for the existence of dry stone walls.

Also, they are a thing of beauty, they last much longer than 'wet' walls, and they're safer than fences when it comes to herding in wildlife.

Besides, what else is there to do with all those stones cluttering up the countryside?

The moors are bleak, the higher you go the less vegetation there is, nothing to stop the wind, wet walls would not stand a chance, but now the wind just ‘whistles’ through the stones!

Wishing you all a beautiful day and thank you for visiting, Magda, (*_*)

Scree slope reflected in the waters of Chilko Lake, approximating an arrow, pointing to the snow-capped mountains in the distance.

Posting this temporarily to continue the discussion of loose gravel. This lovely sign is probably most bothersome from a grammatical standpoint. Only one stone? As you can probably see, this work crew really overdid it with the stones (gravel) atop the hot tar. Meaning it will be dangerous to most four- and two-wheeled vehicles until it sinks in or dissipates somehow. Probably the snow plows will soon push most of it off to the side into yards and gardens.

In the Yorkshire Dales.

Drystone walls are, with hedgerows, one of the most commonly used field boundaries in England, and help create what we now regard as the traditional pattern of field and lanes so evocative of rural England.

While hedgerows are most common in the Lowland Zone, drystone walling is most often found in the Upland, Zone.

It defines the landscape of Yorkshire, cuts the land like endless veins.

The story I was told was that they were loose stone because of the wind, now 'whistling' through..

The roots of drystone walling as a method of enclosing fields lie at least as far back as the Iron Age.

My adopted country is a place of extremes, from lush, green and fertile to barren and bleak, a beautiful part of the world, where you can come to rest and feast your eyes and replenish your soul!

Although I am not really a landscape photographer, I cannot help myself to try and capture the beauty when I see it…

Thank you for ALL your comments and visits, so appreciated.

Ι feel very proud of this capture...After many hours searching for a theme in a clouded sky me and my friend found a known spot place with the only diference of a broken window waiting for us. The broken window was there because of the past days flooding in Eretria. The idea was to give it life again through my camera...It was a hard capture, cold and windy weather and an angry sea and my friend had to balance on a broken woodmade bridge for just one capture.

Squares are everywhere man! These guys were spying on me as I was on my way home today.

After driving around looking for squares, I found this guys in disguise on the side of the road. After many stops along the side of the road (one such stop almost got a dog run over by a Hummer on a back country road), a few strange looks and too much (or too little) time in Photoshop... well, here it is. Sheesh!

Gem collecting is my third-favorite hobby (after birdwatching and photography), but since I'm not rich, I have to sell some to keep buying more. These are no longer in my possession, but I've got another carat just like them.

I'm just posting this for a photo game and a pink-Tuesday pool, so feel free not to comment. But enjoy the shininess!

This photo is also available under a Creative Commons license. If you use it, please link back to me, and I'd love to see your work!
