"Armitage is a Leeds-born sculptor who was a former student of Leeds College of Art from 1934 to 1937. Armitage, who was awarded a CBE in 1969 and who died in 2002 aged 85, is widely regarded as among the most significant British sculptors of the 20th century. He is best known for moulding bronze to depict parts of the human body and the 16-ft ‘Hands’ sculpture in Millennium Square, Leeds is a classic example of his work."
