Turning heads, its not everyday Europe comes to Dublin.
Stena Europe comes to Dublin Ireland.
Covering for other Stena ships on overhauls, seen on the Holyhead-Dublin run in early 2021.
Stena Europe is expected to leave the fleet in 2023 after many years of faithful service, loved by crews & passengers.

Wishing you all the luck in the world in getting back on your feet Nathan. I'm sure after the initiative you've shown people will come forward with work for you. I see it's already been posted on Facebook a few times.

I made a donation to the Oregon City shelter and Shepherds of Good Hope in Ottawa, Canada, after reading news reports of "Freedom Convoy" protesters harassing Shepherds of Good Hope staff on January 29, 2022. Very uncool.
The theme for this week's Macro Monday's group is "Life is Hard". And well it is for lots of folks we know right now. Though we are doing okay, I know or know of more and more people who are losing their jobs. Looking for work for some has become their current job, so to speak, and so I thought of them and tried to visualize one way of capturing that in a Macro. If you have an opportunity please visit the group pool for many other very creative images for this week's theme or consider entering one yourself!
This is the first of 2. I'll upload the second one on Monday as I can.
Day 9 of 365 – HELP WANTED
My cell phone rang this morning as I walked into work. It was my Contracting company letting me know that their client terminated my contract effective today. I could go on for days about the horrible circumstances and rant about the people involved however it would do any good. When I finally came to peace and the rant was complete, I would still be unemployed. Leaving today was bitter sweet. Bitter because I love my job, bitter because.....well let's just say because and leave it at that. Tomorrow is a new day filled with a plethora of opportunity and wonderful possibilities. I guess you could say I've reached the next "crossroads" of life.
Keep your head up!

Subject - Myself and the LA Times
...when you get a call,
...the week before Christmas,
...at 2:00 in the afternoon,
...on a Tuesday,
...from the company HR Manager,
...who lives in a different state,
...and he says he'll be at your office in an hour.
Such was our story a few weeks ago when my dear hubby called and said he was coming home from work early. His company re-structured and his job was eliminated. So now we're back in the job market looking for gainful employment, and my days as a Stay at Home Mom may be numbered.
My apologies dear Flickr Friends for not being as involved in all your beautiful photo streams lately - but we're down to one computer and I'm pretty sure the "supportive wife handbook" says I shouldn't complain when hubby is using it to search for a job.
On the POSITIVE side of thing:
1) My dear one has amazing skills, interviews well, and makes a good first impression
2) We live in a big city with plenty of opportunities
3) He received a fair severance package, so we're not destitute yet.
4) We don't live extravagantly, have a fairly low mortgage payment and both our cars are paid off.
5) Savings doesn't have to be saved for retirement
6) We're willing and able to relocate if needed
7) I was a pretty sharp cookie in my day and I'm sure I could get a job - gulp - if I had to.
8) My sweet husband has a calm personality and a positive outlook that is totally contagious
9) I don't eat when I'm stressed, so I didn't gain my usual Holiday extra pounds
I have faith it will all work out OK in the end.
The photograph of the bus stop/shelter was taken in Windhoek on the 25th of May 2009. Although Africa Day was a public holiday many young men were out looking for work, like the one pictured.
The message on the bus stop itself is ironic, firstly as there are no buses on a public holiday and secondly because the final slogan from one of our cellular networks which says “get connected”, although very clever, makes no difference to this young man.
Poverty and living below the breadline is a stark reality as we celebrate Africa Day, many of it’s people can barely feed themselves let alone own a cell phone and other ‘desirable’ things, that are often punted on buses, bus stops etc.
I chose to photograph the subject from a low angle in black and white to emphasize this reality.
The inspiration i get from this Young man is the willingness to work even on a holiday. He was happy and positive despite obvious hardship.

We purchased this drawing in New York City from a lovely gallery lady who had known Isabel very well, and we were told that our drawing is a man reading "in Union Square" where Ms. Bishop would REGULARLY go to sketch. Now, years later, I go onto Google and search the words: Smithsonian interview Isabel bishop. You will find the interesting Union Square / Isabel Bishop little story there that she told in her ORAL HISTORY interview. ENJOY!
This is the mountain of paperwork and job leads I got from Goodwill today when I went for a one on one interview. They're helping me conduct my job hunt.

I photographed this at the Poppy Festival in Lancaster, California near to where we live in Hollywood, California. It was an art show and this guy happened to stand a long time in front of this painting and I stood a long time photographing him as he HELD ON...
NOTE BUG ON HER SHOULDER... maybe he was remembering something about his childhood in the forest (he seems to like WILD NATURE in greens and dark reds)
I worked every day since high school Lord
at the Junction IGA
I watched the economy slowing down.
and my friends and neighbors pay..
I watched the school kids getting wet
because they can't afford a roof
I watched the Goverment spend money
In every country on this Earth..
there's a flag on my front lawn
it's just blowing in the wind
makes me wonder where we're going
makes me think of where we've been.
the facotry's in Ross county
Ain't hired in 5 years
there ain't much work going on
round here my friend,.....
Last night i was sacking groceries
talking to a Johnson twin
when the front door busted open
and a man with a gun came in
as i looked down the barrel
of that pistol in his hand/
I saw the fear in his eyes
as he made his demand..
Lord it was like a nightmare
a nighmare straight from hell
he looked like someone i once knew
but i really couldn't tell..
the factory's in Ross county
Ain't hired in 5 years
ain't much work going on
round here my friend,
today the front page of the paper
showed him laying on the floor
says i took a gun and shot him
when he turned towards the door.
i swear i can't remember
can't remember what i done
but something in me's lost
something in me is gone.
Lord it was like a night mare
a night mare straight from hell
he looked like someone i once knew
but i really couldn't tell....
today the story on the news cast
shows the mayor of our fine town
he's standing with a shovel
ready to break new ground.
their building a new prision
bringing 30 new jobs this way
the town folk say its good news
i say "it's time to pray..".
behind the mayor there's a flag
it's blowing in the wind
makes me wonder where we're going
makes me think of where we've been.
the factories in ross county
ain't hired in 5 years
there ain't much work going on
round here my friend.
no there ain't much work going on round here my friend....

George liked the "live-in-motion art" better than the static art !
This is George and his musical friend who plays a "DIDGERIDOO"
The musical man taught himself to play it and designed his own instrument. He made "special" sounds come out of it, like "thank you" when he tipped his hat... it sounded just like "thank you" but it came from his musical instrument, as if the hat was making the sound when he raised the hat on high...
He had a flyer that said something like:
"The (Didjeridu) is a Euro-Australian name for the sacred Aboriginal wind instrument shaped naturally by termites from a Euralyptus tree. " "... the Aboriginal people have shared this instrument outside of the tribe on a RECREATIONAL LEVEL in much the same way as they would teach their uninitiated boys. RECREATIONAL PLAYING TEACHES US TO STUDY NATURE, LEARNING TO IMITATE OR CAPTURE THE SPIRIT OF THE AUSTRALIAN LANDSCAPE AND ITS INHABITANTS WHILE LEARNING A GREATER RESPECT FOR MOTHER EARTH." ".. known to be the oldest wind instrument known, probably as far back as forty-thousand years."
to paraphrase:
FLICKR photos and comments, titles, and descriptions are to study nature ... trying to capture the landscapes and the peoples on mother Earth in order to show greater respect for each of them. ....
be well, be happy, and enjoy the adventure of each day....
COLLAGE BY DIANE ALBERTINA with george, diane, and that glory of hat boxes...
A writer, William Burroughs, said in an interview, "I've recently done a lot of experiments with SCRAPBOOKS. ... I'll be walking down the street and I'll suddenly see a scene and I'll PHOTOGRAPH IT and put it in a scrapbook." He includes in his scrapbook not just the photograph but WHAT HE WAS THINKING ABOUT at the moment he saw the SCENE, what he was thinking about WHILE HE TOOK THE PHOTO, what MEMORIES the scene brought into his mind when he saw it, and he even includes what he had been READING just BEFORE HE SAW the scene, and what WORDS he wrote right after photographing the IMAGE. /// A TOTAL OBSERVATION OF LIFE AS IT EXISTS... MULTIPLE DIRECTIONS OF INPUT.
HE CALLS ALL OF THIS SCRAP-BOOKING "time travel" , taking ALL of the scraps of information SURROUNDING the photograph "to see how completely I can project myself back to that ONE POINT IN TIME."

That's right, folks, only minutes after the announcement, actually a news leak, the names of the new leaders of the new DEPARTMENT OF JOBS has been made official. They are, from left to right: Bobby Lee, Davey Duggins and brother Timmy Duggins. They are posing here, to serve as an example of being ready to begin their "SHOVEL-READY JOBS."
TIRED EYES AFTER THIS 13th DAY OF LOOKING FOR WORK and an awareness that even part-time at the computer for long stretches without a break of closing/relaxing ones eyes is not going to be easy-on-the-eyes even if one is paid for the time !!!

A strong spine beneath the tiny head... a mere reflection .. A strong spine beneath the tiny head... a mere reflection in a puddle puddle our neighborhood ... the brightness of a puddle on the cement. The glow of the reflected sunlight in the apartment window. The blue reflection of the sky. The wetness of rain-bubbles.
THE TOTAL SURPRISE that a puddle on cement can hold such a very pristine reflection.
THE TOTAL SURPRISE that in a photo rain bubbles look like piled frame-row of snow!

This is Magritte's "Hegel's Holiday (Les Vacances de Hegel)" 1958 ... he had in his book collection the works of Hegel and this book says that, "Hegel's dialectical method is in line with Magritte's own DISCIPLINE OF THOUGHT"... Magritte often speaks of "the absolute thought" (which also comes from Hegel) Magritte did experimental research into THE ESSENCE OF VISIBLE THINGS"

AKA The Recession, AKA The Credit Crunch.
Personally , I prefer the Recession. It's got more of an eighties feel to it.
The woman's clipboard said "Looking For Work ?" and she was walking up and down Queen Street occasionally sitting down and waiting to be approached.

TORRENTING ... passing large amounts of data from peer-to-peer
at any moment in time there is a quarter of A BILLION TORRENTING activities of BitTorrent going on on the internet ... more than users on facebook and youtube combined at that exact moment in time
WHAT IS THE WORLD COMING TO????? Yet, this actual red as it appeared in the sky over our balcony

I hadn't mentioned the Smiths lived in a Basement, common residences in Leo Street Peckham in East London. Reading about this families story brings home what affect the later War had on this family? Here his wife passes the front door key though to him after his day out looking for work.
Via the letters pages in the edition of February 11th Alf thanked Picture Post saying their series about his plight got him employment. He was offered and accepted a labouring position digging out trenches for air raid shelters Plus another as grave digger in Cornwall he was considering.
