This candid cellphone shot was taken and processed in May, 2017. It was snapped while I waited to see my mother, who was spending her last few years in a nursing home. I look at it every so often, and It pulls at me every time I see it. I've never shown it publically until now.
Photographs can work to build empathy, by helping us better understand and appreciate our mutual human condition. I don't know if this shot qualifies on that level, but even if it does, my feelings about posting it remain mixed.
Spontaneous, uninvited photographs can be seen as unwelcome by those being photographed. Given that, I decided to wait until most, if not all, of those in the photo had passed on and, hopefully....would be past caring. If I have not waited long enough for any who may be dissatisfied with it, I apologize.
Bowling alley in the administration building of a veterans care facility. It was strange & unnerving to explore a location that still had power. I felt uneasy the whole time with the expectation of being caught. I assumed it was alarmed but we saw nothing. Moments after exiting security drove around the corner while we were setting up for exteriors. We were very lucky to have gotten out in time!

RETIREMENT SECURITY: Better Information on Income Replacement Rates Needed to Help Workers Plan for Retirement
Notes: Age groupings are based on the age of the reference person, or the person who rents or owns the home, for the consumer unit. There may be adults in the in the consumer unit who are older or younger than the reference person. A consumer unit can comprise (1) all members of a household related by blood, marriage, or other legal arrangement, (2) a person living alone or sharing a household but who is financially independent, or (3) two or more persons living together who make joint expenditures. For the purposes of this report, we refer to consumer units as households. We did not adjust spending levels for household size. The "other" category of spending includes expenditures for reading, tobacco, alcoholic beverages, education, cash contributions, personal care, and miscellaneous expenses. The "personal insurance and pensions category" includes deductions for government and railroad retirement, private pensions, and Social Security. According to Bureau of Labor Statistics officials, the private pensions category includes defined benefit, defined contribution, and individual retirement accounts. Housing expenditures include expenses such as rent, utilities, and mortgage interest payments, but do not include payments on mortgage principal. For more information on mortgage principal, see appendix II. For more information on Consumer Expenditure Survey expenditure categories and treatment of taxes, see appendix I. For average total spending, 95 percent confidence intervals are less than +/-9 percent of the estimate itself for all age groups.

The original Home for the Aged (initially known as the Industrial Home and later changed the name to House of Refuge) was built in 1883 and was located on Yonge Street in Newmarket. In 1953 a new home was considered to replace the original. The new home was to be run jointly by Metropolitan Toronto and York County from 1954, but after the formation of Metropolitan Toronto, York County purchased the home and changed the name to York Manor Home for the Aged.
The original home was inadequate, so the County purchased land adjacent to the old home and built a new 176 bed home. The groundbreaking ceremony took place in 1959, and York Manor Home for the Aged officially opened October 17, 1961, at the corner of Eagle Street and Yonge Street. In attendance were Major A. A. Mackenzie (MPP) and the Honorable Louis Cecil, Minister of Public Welfare.
In 1968 the building was expanded with the addition of 52 beds. It was officially opened on November 19, 1970. In 1985 Council approved the construction of two new long-term care facilities - one in Newmarket and the other in the south (later Newmarket Health Centre and Maple Health Centre). York Region took over Greenacres from Metropolitan Toronto in 1991 and residents of York Manor were transferred to Greenacres in 1993. Greenacres was renamed Newmarket Health Centre. York Manor was later demolished in 1994. The Eldred King Gardens was dedicated in 1997 at the former York Manor site.
