A Wing and a Flare

I hope you love moon halos as much as I do! Especially if they're hovering over a weathered Lockheed Harpoon! Although my Clear Outside app called for almost 100% cloud coverage, it indicated solely high clouds. And I knew high clouds often look beautiful when smeared in a long exposure image. I met friends Ivan, Tami, and Tyler at an old decommissioned WWII airfield. I ended up staying until 4:30 am, much of it catching up with Tyler before driving back and listening to metal and Lakers podcasts. I illuminated the scene with a handheld Protomachines LED2 during the exposure. The wing looks extra looooooong due to the distortion from my fisheye lens! Fun!

Moon Over Nazca (1761)

As a kid, I loved Indiana Jones movies, and so I was excited to photograph the Aeropuerto de Nazca fuel truck used in one of those movies, now rusting away in a decommissioned WWII airfield, photographed on a cold February evening. I believe this is a 1937 Ford truck. This is a long exposure night photo which shows the movement of the stars over long periods of time. I illuminated the truck with a ProtoMachines LED2 handheld flashlight from camera right while the tripod-mounted camera's shutter was open. This will likely be featured in my next night photography book, which I'm working on now. Until then, my new book "Abandoned Southern California: the Slowing of Time" is out!

Night time at Bedrock City, a place right out of history that I have loved from childhood. I've been fortunate enough to do night photography there several times. However, this time was bittersweet. When I was there, I thought it might be the last time I would ever see it since it was going to be torn down to build a raptor park. Since then, however, I've heard some recent news that the new owners have decided to keep the buildings, so I am quite happy to hear that. I lit the prehistoric service station from several different angles with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. The clouds often blotted out the full moon but added mystery and drama to the images. Here, the moon is peaking over the top of the gas station. This was photographed during a 10-day 2559-mile night photography road trip with Mike Cooper, Tim Little, and George Loo. This photo may appear in a third book of night photography that I am working on now.

Magic Rock Star Trails

Raining stars over the California desert, a long exposure night photo showing the celestial movements of the heavens over the course of 21 minutes. I'm reaching deep into the archives today to a photo that is almost five years old. This is the only night I've ever ventured out when completely forgetting to take my tripod. But because I'm forgetful, I have always kept my father's old 1970s tripod from Sears in the back of my car, and it served me well here.

I'm always amazed at how much color comes out in a photo that is hidden or barely discernible when we are looking at it with our own eyes. I know this intellectually, of course, but am still amazed every time. It's this sort of quality that further inspires me to slow down and really appreciate the night sky and how the world looks at night in general.

Caught Between The Moon and Yucca Valley (9405)

The moon behind a silhouette of a Joshua Tree in beautiful Joshua Tree National Park, CA on a perfect night in mid-June. I met my friend Dave for dinner and then drove out to this picturesque area of the Park for the beginning of my photog adventure in this area. To the right of this photo was a strange humming sound, and as I walked closer, I realized that it was a giant bee hive. That area could wait for another time to explore. Time to walk to a different area and photograph! I liked the way the moon appeared to nestle between the branches of this Joshua Tree, and the stars this evening were magnificent, shimmering on that way that stars shimmer only in the desert night sky.

The Gold Eye and the Heavens Above (6322)

You know you are somewhere quiet and remote when you are keenly aware of that barely perceptible "hum" and are conscious of how well you can hear your breathing. Silence is louder and the stars shine brighter. This is Ojo Oro Arch, a hidden gem located in a secret corner of the Mojave Desert, not a strange new world from "Star Trek" but almost as far. Bodhi Smith, Chip Morton and I hiked several miles and hung out during this night photography trip. When I finally settled down to sleep under the stars around 3:30 am cocooned by a canopy of stars and the Milky Way arching directly overhead. Every several minutes, I saw shooting stars streaking through the night sky. Much thanks to Bodhi for inviting me on this fantastic trip. I illuminated the rocky arch with warm white light and red light using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 during the exposure. Thank you very much for looking!

Pinnacle of Light (1358)

I was on vacation in Mammoth Lakes with my girlfriend, but snuck off for some night photography one evening, heading over to Mono Lake to photograph their otherworldly tufas. When some guys go out for the evening without their girlfriend, they might hit a bar; I grab my camera and go outside in the starlight. I've always been a bit strange. Anyway, I felt really creative this evening, having a lot of fun illuminating the tufas with a warm white light from my ProtoMachines LED2 while the shutter of my tripod-mounted camera remained open for the exposure. I was thankful for a beautiful night, not too windy, but serene and gorgeous, and here, I could easily see the Milky Way arching completely overhead, something that always fills me with awe. This was the last photo of the evening, something I saved for last because I wanted the Milky Way to seem like it was emanating from the tallest tufa in this grouping.

I Followed The Lights To the Mojave Barn (4904)

Near the top of a rise is an immense barn, rising up out of the Mojave Desert amidst the Joshua Trees and the pines, where the stars shine more brightly. And sometimes, if you are a night photographer and you ask really nicely, you could enter the barn and shoot light out from every crack. I was such a night photographer. Dusty but grinning from ear to ear, I walked through the cavernous two-story structure, throwing out warm beams of light with my faithful ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device while my camera faced the barn and registered all 195 seconds of the exposure in this resultant image.

Another cold but beautiful winter night near Joshua Tree National Park, having fun with a fisheye lens I had just purchased while photographing this water tower. Instant fun. Instant creativity. This is a long exposure photo. I love how a single image can show the passage of time (50 minutes here), showing time in a way that we cannot ordinarily perceive. 77% waxing moon. I illuminated the foreground from multiple angles with a handheld flashlight while the tripod-mounted camera held its shutter open.

To See the Stars

After a fun day of kayaking, I ran over to the north side of Big Bear Lake, standing in really wet sand and mud to see the Milky Way arching over Big Bear Solar Observatory. The lake is at 6752 ft. in elevation and is good for seeing the evening stars, but even so, I was surprised to see this much of the Milky Way despite the glow of the town's lights and an 86% moon that had just risen just ten or fifteen minutes before. And the light of the moon is mostly what is illuminating the left side of the observatory. I was also pleased to see that the wind had subsided, creating beautiful reflections. You can see smoke from the devastating Apple Fire drifting over the San Bernardino Mountains. I also want to mention that despite the fact that we were up here for our one-year anniversary, my wife insisted that I run out and take a photo of the observatory anyway. She figured she was going to sleep anyway, and besides, she knows that night photography is like breathing to me. All the same, I made sure I woke up reasonably early so I wouldn't ruin our day.

Take Me to Emerald City (7473)

A late evening scene of two buses angling in at a distant mill. And I managed to stay awake for Thanksgiving dinner the following evening, a great success. Although warm and sunny during the day, by the time I packed up, it was below freezing and I had ice on my windshield. I illuminated the interior of the two buses with warm white and green light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure.

I believe both school buses were built in the 1930s, although I don't know this for a fact. That's all the information I have on these other than to say that they would probably make a cool RV conversion. Then again, remember, I'm a person who thinks that maybe I should convert either the Oscar Mayer Weinermobile or a large taco truck into an RV, so take it for what it's worth.

Stars of the Silver Screen (4691)

A large arch in the Alabama Hills, framing the snow-capped Sierra Nevadas. The second night of my mini-trip to beautiful Owens Valley had some clouds, but undaunted, I photographed this arch anyway. After all, the sky had this gauzy atmosphere, soft and beautiful, so I embraced it. I was surprised by how many people pulled up to the area, only to leave. I used a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device to illuminate the arch from several angles. Many films, including classic Westerns, and TV shows and commercials have been created here in the Alabama Hills near Lone Pine, CA. I had someone approach me, and despite me yelling hello, did not respond. He was a bit lost and never heard me over the breeze, his headlamp weaving in and out of the rocks. When he arrived, I spoke to him for five minutes before realizing that I was still clutching my bear spray with my thumb on the activator, ready to go, which he never saw. He was a night photographer from Fresno.

Epic night clouds rush past the old Road Runner's Retreat Restaurant in the Mojave Desert. Much of the business along Route 66 in California dried up overnight when the much quicker I-40 was completed. This was photographed during a week-long 1582-mile road trip with Mike Cooper. A night photo, as you might guess. This truck must be an unbelievable force of nature. And back in the 1920s or whenever this was built, it must have been particularly imposing, a sort of monstrous Mad Max/Burning Man contraption that was bigger than life. I snuck in a quick visit just before Thanksgiving Day, photographing for two nights in a row in the California desert near the Mexican border. A 1950s sci-fi looking long exposure night sky photo around 3:36 am. These are the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy (CARMA), a multi-university-based interferometer, using 23 radio telescopes used jointly to image the astronomical universe at millimeter wavelengths, producing high-resolution astronomical images. Earlier, I had driven from a ghost town in Nevada and had been doing night photography in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest earlier. I didn't get to CARMA until 3 am. I was tired and not too pleased that the skies were suddenly cloudy. But in retrospect, the clouds look pretty great like this. I was there for about one hour photographing the dish arrays. I vowed to return, but never could. CARMA was dismantled the following year.

When The Earth Reached Its Arms To the Heavens (2507)

Listening to the cosmos seems easier to imagine with the Milky Way arching overhead. Owens Valley Radio Observatory, run by Cal Tech since 1958, and located in the beautiful Owens Valley near Big Pine and Bishop, CA. I illuminated the dish with a handheld ProtoMachines LED flashlight during the exposure. The sky was murky with the Georges Fire near Mt. Whitney, which was caused by lightning, so I had to be patient, waiting for the skies to periodically clear. Another challenge was that this enormous radio telescope kept moving during exposures! The beautiful night desert, where silence is louder and the stars shine brighter. This is Ojo Oro Arch, a hidden gem located in a secret corner of the Mojave Desert, not a strange new world from "Star Trek" but almost as far. Bodhi Smith, Chip Morton and I hiked several miles and hung out during this night photography trip. When I finally settled down to sleep under the stars around 3:30 am cocooned by a canopy of stars and the Milky Way arching directly overhead. Every several minutes, I saw shooting stars streaking through the night sky. Much thanks to Bodhi for inviting me on this fantastic trip. Imagine walking carefully on a flat white valley floor completely aglow from the light of a full moon on a whisper-quiet evening. That is Racetrack Playa in Death Valley N.P., CA, far from anywhere, and utterly enchanting. For the longest time, none of us were sure these mysterious stones left these tracks while sliding across the parched desert floor. Although we know now, it's still magical.

I met up with my friend Lance Keimig (National Parks At Night) and a beautiful group of people in DVNP. We went out late nights to photograph the amazing sites. This was my last photo of the evening, as it was cold and others had retreated to the car or were packing up. I knew I didn't have enough time for star trails, so I set the camera to a shorter exposure. I ran around, illuminating the rock and the flat white ground with white and red light from my handheld flashlight while the tripod-mounted camera shutter remained open. Night falls upon a, uh, wow....okay, an old "Federal Clown Prison" transportation bus! This is located at the Motor Transport Museum near the border of Mexico, close enough that we could easily see the lights of nearby towns. We also saw a plume of smoke. The gentleman I spoke to mentioned that some people attempting to sneak across the border will light fires to distract people from finding them. The Long Shadow of Fossil Fuel (4098)

Long shadows reach out from an abandoned gas station, Two Guns, Arizona, built in 1963, only to burn eight years later, partially sending the location into decline. Two Guns has a fascinating history complete with Apache massacres in death caves, drifters, gila monster bites, calamitous fires, a strange zoo and general misfortune. I lit the structure from several different angles with a handheld ProtoMachines light painting device during the exposure. I finally returned to my spiritual home for night photography, Joshua Tree National Park. I had not photographed nightscapes in the main part of the Park at night for at least two years. Instead, I had been focusing on photographing abandoned buildings and vehicles and more for my photography books. But not tonight. It was a beautiful March night lit with a half moon. Night falls, but with a large full winter moon's light bathing an old Chevrolet flatbed. This was photographed at a decommissioned WWII airfield in California. Interior illuminated with a blue light; exterior with a warm white light from the ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device on a chilly night in February. American Natives sometimes referred to the February full moon as the snow moon, and while we were missing snow in this area, it still seems fitting. Night time at Bedrock City, a place right out of history that I have loved from childhood. I'm not really sure what this particular building was, but it had a prehistoric phone one could use. "Wah wah wah wah wah!" I've been fortunate enough to do night photography there several times. However, this time was bittersweet. When I was there, I thought it might be the last time I would ever see it since it was going to be torn down to build a raptor park. Since then, however, I've heard some recent news that the new owners have decided to keep the buildings, so I am quite happy to hear that. The clouds often blotted out the full moon but added mystery and drama to the images. Night falls. Metal creaks. Do you dare enter this train? Hiking up to some unused tracks at night near the border of Mexico felt like an adventure. Turn the corner and you suddenly glimpse a long string of abandoned double-decker passenger cars, left to rot away on unused railroad tracks in the Mojave Desert near the border of Mexico. They are unfortunately heavily tagged as well since so few items can remain abandoned in the desert without people showing up with spray cans. This was photographed during a week-long 1582-mile road trip with Mike Cooper.

A long-nosed military warbird, magnificent even while resting under the stars of the Southwestern Desert of the United States. Using a ProtoMachines LED2 flashlight capable of producing different colors, I illuminated the plane from several angles while the tripod-mounted camera shutter was open for this long exposure photo. The streaks in the night sky are star trails created by the movement of the stars during the long exposure photo. A starry but cloudy night at Two Guns, Arizona, a place of Apache massacres in death caves, drifters, gila monster bites, calamitous fires, a strange zoo, a movie star owner, and general misfortune. And it was also a tourist trap of sorts, featuring some of the above, including the zoo. I illuminated the shade canopy of the abandoned gas station with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure as the stars and the nearly full moon drifted across the night sky.

A night photo fisheye view of an old RV camper on a Ford truck on a beautiful cool Mojave evening, lit with warm white and blue light from a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during this long exposure. During the culling phase, I kept passing this photo up again and again, then one day decided that I liked it and went to process it. I remember really wanting the sky to be dark in this, so I exposed it for less time than I usually do to create the contrast between my blue light and the blue night sky. You've Got Stuck in a Moment and Now You Can't Get Out of It (1543)

I don't know what circumstances exactly may have led to this bus being buried in sand, but it seems to be nature taking the earth back coupled with some foolish decisions that led to even more sand drifts than nature intended. This is a long exposure night photo of a bus hopelessly buried in sand somewhere in the Mojave Desert.

This is one of the first photos I created with my new camera, a Pentax K-1, which was a joy to use. I've been using Nikons for many years, so finding the controls and everything else was a bit of an adjustment. I photographed up and down Route 66 at night, using Barstow as a home base. While taking this night photo, I illuminated the interior and exterior of the bus with a ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the ten minute exposure. This will likely appear in a future night photography book I will publish.

Night photo of some massive gears in this long exposure photo showing the celestial movements of the beautiful desert sky. I snuck in a quick visit just before Thanksgiving Day, photographing for two nights in a row in the California desert near the Mexican border. And I managed to stay awake for Thanksgiving dinner the following evening!! Although warm and sunny during the day, by the time I packed up, it was below freezing and I had ice on my windshield. I illuminated the scene from several angles with a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device during the exposure. Thanks for looking.

I had been trying to get to Patriarch Grove, at the end of a 12-mile dirt road way up in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest, for several years. Every year, something would happen. Trees would topple. Too much snow. Lightning storm. On this day, I thought my efforts would again be scuttled. A large big rig had overturned in Highway 168. A motorist told me to turn back. I kept going. I pulled up to the accident. A policeman waved me through. Whewww! That was that! The Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest is located in the White Mountains by Owens Valley. At over 10,500 ft (3200m) in elevation, the sky is clearer, the stars more visceral, and my smile much larger. The bristlecone pines are some of the oldest living things on the planet, some growing before Buddha or George Burns walked the earth. This time, I did not use the ProtoMachines to light anything, letting the universe do the lighting for the rest.

We've Got Gas! (3988)

Night falls on Hackberry, Arizona, photographed during the first night of my largest summer road trip in 2019. Hackberry is a former mining town named for the Hackberry Mine, which in turn was named for a tree at a nearby spring. Prospector Jim Music helped develop the mine in 1875. This is the general store, which sells fun stuff to tourists. It opened in 1934 when the new alignment of Route 66 bypassed the town at the time. According to "theroute-66" website, this store also had a Conoco gas station, which remained open until 1978 when Interstate 40 bypassed the area. Bob Waldmire opened it in 1992 as a souvenir shop and information center and sold it in 1998 to the Pritchard family. I stopped off during the day and asked if the overhead lights were off so I could photograph this at night. I was assured that they would be. They were not. However, I managed to get this image anyway using a shorter exposure, working quickly to illuminate the gas pumps with warm white light, and also backlighting the gravity pump with red light using a handheld ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device. This was photographed during a 10-day 2559-mile night photography road trip a day before meeting up with Mike Cooper, Tim Little, and George Loo. This photo may appear in a third book of night photography that I am working on now.

Neptune's Inferno (5923)

Looking at the starry night skies in the cockpit of a dismantled P2V-3W Neptune aircraft on a decommissioned WWII airfield in California. I illuminated the interior of this plane, managing to scratch my leg while trying cramming myself inside, wondering how the pilots could squeeze themselves in here when flying. I hope they weren't 6' 1". I used some red light from my ProtoMachines LED2 light painting device while the camera shutter was open during a full and bright winter moon on a chilly night in February. This will likely appear in my second book, which I hope to finish by fall 2020. Feel free to share.
