What started out as a very overcast day evolved into a light sprinkle of drizzle followed by a sudden burst of showery downpour; and then came the spectacular late afternoon low sun, blue sky and feathery fleece-like clouds. What a feast for the eyes and soul.

Ps. imagine the sound of tyres driving over wet tarmac; the crows squawking and circling for worms and the sound of birds tweeting between the noise of passing traffic.

On a grey day the sun burst through the clouds and the wet ground and waterlogged field glistened and shimmered; and the trees cast a mirror image in the reflected waters.

A November morning walk along the Erewash Canal heading towards Trent Lock, stopping at Attenborough Nature Reserve and back again was such a peaceful; civilised and picturesque adventure. The waters were calm and the sun was aglow. I've lived in London, I've lived in Manchester but I always return to this place I call home.

Popped along to Trent lock last night after spotting the steam from the power station was dominating the sky locally and with the night sky being mostly clear, I thought it would be a great time to try some long exposure night time stuff. Despite numb fingers it was an enjoyable hours or so

Snow transforms many scenes and this one being a favourite of mine I couldn’t resist capturing it

The sun came out for a few hours last week and I took advantage and took a stroll at Trent Lock.

Waiting for a train to show I couldn't resist this shot of the pylon and the signal glowing as darkness fell. It was raining, but there was a quiet serenity to the place.

It's Tuesday somewhere, so #HTT :)

Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station dominates most viewpoints of Old Sawley (Long Eaton) and its surrounding landscapes.

After the heavy rains of mid-February two swans settled on the flooded farmland. I was attracted to the juxtaposition of nature and the industrial dominance of the cooling towers and the chimney (if you look closely to the base of the cooling towers and behind the foliage, you can see two trains passing in opposite directions) – also, the way that the natural light has split the composition in two horizontally with the sunlight bathing the (ugly[?]) manmade construction in warm light, and the cold muted hues of the shade depriving the beauty of nature (the swans) of their moment. It somehow feels like a betrayal.

Sunday morning gave me the opportunity to do a local shoot for a change and part.of it took me along the Erewash canal close to Trent lock in Long Eaton...The beautiful early sunlight and sky made for wonderful light and reflection's

Captured in my local park on Sunday when the heavens opened and gave us the best snowfall for years, still not quite sure how I managed to capture the tiny lone tree in focus.

There are many photos that I have not uploaded to flickr in the period from 2020-22. Anyway, this image of MIlls Boatyard on the Erewash Canal at Long Eaton was part of a brilliant frosty, foggy morning shoot that was an absolute gift for photography. I knew from the forecast that the morning had potential, which was enough to encourage me to make the short drive from Beeston to Long Eaton.

Long Eaton GP's, Derbyshire. First proper trip out since lockdown, just nice to finally get out (though I did quite enjoy my garden birding). Plenty of singing warblers, this from the back of the windsurfing lake.

One of those 5 minute beauties that flourish and disappear in the blink of an eye, we had to settle for some wonderful reflections in the Erewash canal by the Steamboat inn at Trent lock, Long Eaton

A reworked and enhanced image......

After negotiating the curves through Trent Junction, one-time celebrity DB Tug no. 60074 'Teenage Spirit' visibly powers up as she wheels the 3.41pm Kinsgsbury - Lindsey Oil Refinery (6E59) discharged tanks over Meadow Lane Crossing.

The shot was taken in the rain, as evidenced by the windscreen wiper, and you can glimpse the back of the train just beneath the flyover catching a few signal reflections.

I took this shot some 12 minutes after the recent upload 'Bokeh blues', by which time the fast disappearing light had already lost another stop. Luckily, even at 400mm, the image stabilisation did a fabulous job and I was able to bag this hand-held at 1/60s. The then new EOS 5D and lens set-up, literally acquired just a couple of weeks beforehand, got a pretty big capability tick.

A majestic looking Heron waiting for some unsuspecting fish meal to come along by the side of the Erewash canal, Long Eaton

Cranfleet cut,Trent Lock,Long Eaton.

I'm now nearly 4 weeks into recovering from a fractured elbow and off untill I can safely drive again. But a very local location is still walkable for me and with a sunrise a stunning as this mornings all my aches and pains diminished just a little.

A shot reprocessed and re-lifed from a few years back.

I was spending time at the family home in Beeston and took advantage of the approaching dusk to come out for a low-light shot of the evening Kingsbury - Lindsey oil tanks. As the blue-hour took hold I couldn't resist this 'warm up' bokeh opportunity. It was raining at the time, hence the water droplets hanging from the ladder rungs.

Commenting off for this one, thanks.

Eurasian Blackcap / sylvia atricapilla. Long Eaton, Derbyshire. 02/04/21.

One of several Blackcaps that had started to appear around the old gravel pits site at Long Eaton. They gave their presence away by snatches of loud song - as this one did initially. I was very pleased to make this image, my first unobstructed shot!

Peak 44005, once of 'Cross Fell' fame but now with nameplates removed, rolls south out of Toton Yard towards the site of the original Long Eaton station on the Erewash valley line.

Introduced in 1959 and weighing in at a massive 133 tons, the ten class 44s spent most of their lives working the heavy coal trains out of Toton, often destined for the London area. Withdrawal of the class commenced in 1976 and by 1977 they were starting to be seen on less challenging duties - the lightweight evening Spondon tanks would often see a member of the class in charge.

In the late 60s / early 70s a few hours spent at this spot or, even better, Trent Junction a mile or so further on where the flyover lines to the south could be seen, was almost guaranteed to serve up half of the class, or more. This shot was taken from a footbridge which no longer exists, and is close to where a Tesco Supermarket now stands, perhaps even on the site. Note too the gasometer on the right.

At the time I was still half-hopeful of bagging all ten with the camera, but sadly an ambition I never got to realise. 44005 would last a few months longer and was eventually withdrawn in 1978.

Im not sure if any other togs have ever experienced this, but quite often I will take a shot that I have done before without actually realising that I had virtually the same conditions/sky colours as the previous one and not only that, the circumstances were almost identical and even more bizarre...nearly exactly on the same day.....honest

This shot was taken on the 12th July, my previous one on the 10th July, both after I had given up at a previous location and then had to make a mad dash and ended up in exactly the same place...strange. 😉
