This volcanic crater on the east side of Flores Island in the Azores is filled with a shallow lake, Lagoa da Lomba. The lake is one of the famous Sete Lagoas (Seven Lakes) of volcanic origin found on the crest of the Island. Lagoa da Lomba sits at 550 m (1804 ft) above sea level. Geologically, this broad, low relief crater formed during phreatomagmatic eruptions. These eruptions occur when magma interacts with surface or ground water which causes explosive fragmentation of both the magma and host rock. These materials are then ejected as air falls and pyroclastic surges. These volcanoes are referred to as maars. Their cones are usually low relief but ash and ejecta may extend over large areas. The depression in the center is often occupied by a lake as is a case with the Caldeira de Loma. The word maar originated as a name in German for circular lakes in the Rhineland that were formed by phreatomagmatic eruptions.
