A diary for a year of "The Private Life of an English Field"
"MEADOWLAND"
The most enchanting 293 pages that I have ever read.
I'm sure that there are plenty of professional reviews to be found on the internet.
Here is one from the The Guardian website:
www.theguardian.com/books/2014/jun/08/meadowland-review-j...
I find it remarkable that the author, John Lewis-Stempel, mentions 100 Flora items and 156 Fauna.
I had fun noticing the following 39 words/names being used:
amaranth, aposematism, benisons, diaspora, eschatalogical, existential, expressionist, exsiccated, gramineae, ha-ha, hegemony, helix, hubristically, lebensraum, legerdemain, mordant, mouldywarp, neophobic, nottles, oenologist, panegyricke, pellucid, pignut, plash, prestidigitator, Proustian, roiling, Ryelands, St George's mushroom, shillets, Sisyphus, slough, Stakhanovite, stertorous, 'The Little Grey Men', Tippi Hendren, tumps, wassailing and yarrow.
Enough to wet the whistle of any logophile!
Highly recommended and compulsive reading for any naturalist/nature lover.
