Aston Hall is a Grade I listed Jacobean house in Aston, Birmingham. Using a design by John Thorpe, construction was commenced in 1618 by Sir Thomas Holte, and was completed in 1635. It sits in a large park, part of which became Villa Park, the home ground of Aston Villa football club.

The house was severely damaged during the English Civil War, following an attack by Parliamentary troops in 1643. Some of the damage is still evident, and there is a hole in the staircase where a cannonball went through a window and an open door, and into the banister. The house remained in the Holte family until 1817, when it was sold and leased by James Watt Jr., son of industrial pioneer James Watt. The house was purchased in 1858 by a private company (the Aston Hall and Park Company Ltd) for use as a public park and museum. After the company ran into financial difficulties, the house was bought by the Birmingham Corporation in 1864, becoming the first historic country house to pass into municipal ownership.

The east front of the house is flanked by a pair of early 17th Century lodges (c1635). Adjacent to the north lodge is the 18th Century stable range. Both lodges and stable range are Grade I listed.

Our home for two days, and the base for our river trips, was the Kafue River Lodge located at the confluence of the Kafue and Limpopo Rivers in Zambia. We sat on the deck shown here, and watched the hippos, crocs and birds.

The picture yesterday was from one of the river trips the same day. We kept all body parts in the boat the whole time!

Pembroke Lodge,

Richmond Park,

Richmond upon Thames.

Pembroke Lodge is a Grade II listed Georgian mansion in Richmond Park in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames. It is located on high ground with views across the Thames valley to Windsor and Surrey. It has 11 acres (4.5 ha) of beautifully landscaped grounds, including King Henry's Mound from which there is a protected view of St Paul's Cathedral in the City of London. The grounds also include memorials to the 18th-century poet James Thomson and the 20th-century rock-and-roll singer and lyricist Ian Dury.

A very short hike from the lodge is the cliff overlook from where I took my sunset pics. On the way back, I decided to take a pic of the lodge. This is an artificial rendering. When I reduced the noise in the sky, an unappealing texture was left. Kind of committed at that point, I used the paint bucket feature to smooth it out. Looking at the noisy version, I wonder whether it was worth the trouble. Still. I like to reward all that time processing an image by posting it.

I bought my D610 to take pics like this. I was able to get so much of the scene inside the restaurant nice and clear without much noise (the noise was primarily in the sky). My D7100 could not have achieved this. There would have been banding in the sky which would have made sharing a version with the noise unthinkable.

Originally built as a boot & shoe factory for Hinde & Mann, with dwellings for the workers in new streets nearby, during the 1880s. Following the decline in output, the factory was taken over in 1940 by Lodge Plugs to produce spark plugs for aircraft engines.

Now apartments.

The Animal Kingdom Lodge is the premiere hotel representing the Animal Kingdom area of Walt Disney World. The place seems to get a bit ignored compared to the classic Magic Kingdom/Epcot resorts, but I think AKL has quite a lot to offer that no other WDW hotel can match. Every time I visit I'm struck by how well it pulls off a feeling of being in a remote African locale as well as being a fantastic luxury hotel. The hotel rooms overlook a simulated African Savannah where you can wake up every morning and walk to your balcony to see giraffe, zebra, and other wildlife starting their day. I'm not a big animal-lover type but seriously: how cool is that? The resort also features the African influenced restaurant Jiko, which really surprised me by giving me some of the best food and wine I've ever had.

The only downside to AKL is that it's so disconnected from the rest of Walt Disney World, although this may be a good thing depending on the type of trip you're looking for. On my dream-team trip to WDW, I would definitely carve out a couple of nights to stay here, wake with the giraffes, and enjoy some of the best food WDW has to offer.
