Abandoned Lock | Monochrome | By Callum James

When we look around the streets as photographers we often concentrate to much on looking for that 'moment' and often overlook what I would describe as the macro architecture which is constantly around us and can tell stories just as much about the human experience.

This is part of a series call macro street which looks at objects to define a human story behind them.

'Lock Keeper on Duty' the signs say. Justin, who usually operates out at Sandford Lock was duty lock keeper today, think Richard must be away, his boat was nowhere to be seen. Nice to see some sense of 'normality' return.

The long lines of circular light along the sides of the big lock at Ijmuiden fade into bokeh, a small blur of reflection in the water.

Dogwood week 12: Orange

A new shed was built in our back yard, equipped with slide latches where padlocks could be deployed. However the normal padlocks which we had on our old shed don't really work well with this type of latch. More likely these are just the cheapest and worst latches that the builder was able to find. Resulting doors that look locked at first sight, but with a bit of adjustment of the padlock can be opened easily without a key.

One major problem with minilathes -- when making a cut, the tool holder may drift along the x or y axes. Nicer lathes include a locking mechanism to prevent this sort of drift, and so I've added them to my minilathe.

Added a lock screw to the Y-axis.

I drilled and tapped a 5/16-18 hole in just the right place. When I tighten this bolt, it presses against the Y-ways, so that the tool holder will not drift along the Y-axis.

This is what I want to use as a locking mechanism. The two small wooden bits will be attached with elastic cord to the deck with holes similar to the deck lines. In the front there will be a tab that clamps the hatch to the deck. I hope this will create enough force on the seal that they will stay water tight.

The Yale lock on my front door has been sticking a bit so I squirted some WD 40 on it. I had to buy a new can. I first heard about it when I was doing a car maintenance evening class when I was learning to drive in 1965. It's so long since I bought one that I'd not seen one with the captive red tube.
