This is pretty much what a typical urban streetscape in NYC looks like.There are a multitude of old low rise buildings like this all over the city.The low rise tenements are usually four or five-story walkups,so moving in furniture and taking it up several flights of stairs can be quite challenging for someone wanting to rent from one of them.I helped a coworker move into a tenement years ago,and believe me,taking stuff up the stairs was no joke.
When I was growing up in city the ground floor of the buildings had stoops (steps) that residents sometimes sat down on and chatted.At the top of the stoop was the entrance to the building as well as the first floor.Nowadays,(and since gentrification) you'llv see various shops,restaurants,and bars on the ground floor.How many can you find in front of the building?
On this street on 9th Avenue in Manhattan there are bicycle lanes close to the sidewalks.I had to beware of bicyclists and motorists whenever I wanted to take a picture of something to avoid getting struck,I did well here.The neighborhood is called Hell's Kitchen,a name that has been in existence since the early 20th century.The name is over the Brewtique store sign (bottom right).Developers have since called the neighborhood Clinton,after the name of a nearby park.

Alexander Brodsky creates impressive metaphors of contemporary reality which always have the air of the eternal and of otherworldly melancholy. His Pet Corner - a model of the unique life of human animals in urban cages - represented Russia at the architectural biennale in Venice. His Coma (in which oil slowly fills up a city) was said by Boris Orlov, a living Sots-Art master, to be the best work of the 1990s. Back then, it seemed to be a harbinger of doom; today, one remembers it as a prophecy coming true. Brodsky's visual language affirms the sublime, growing out of the ashes. Many of his works are realized in destruction, and in touching the order of loss, they manage to convey to us unchanging truth about ourselves. extrait du site du musée de Perm
