This is a medium-sized lizard reaching nearly 10 inches (25 cm) in total length; males are larger than females. The head is large. Two black collars around the neck give the lizard its name. The small body scales have a ground color of tan, bright green, olive, brown, bluish or yellowish with many light spots and dark crossbands.

Collared lizards are capable of running swiftly on their hind legs, the body held off the ground at a 45° angle, with tail and forelimbs raised. The stride is up to 3 times the length of the body. They do not lose their tails easily, as they are useful in maintaining balance as the lizards sprint on hind legs. Speed facilitates the capture of prey by these visually oriented lizards. They have large heads with strong jaw muscles that allow them to get a powerful grip on large prey such as lizards.

Old lifeboat station on Lizard Point. Built in 1914. Troubling to think that it is conditions like these that the lifeboat men had to get out to the shoals to rescue wrecked mariners.

10 stopper filter, handheld, balanced on a clifftop in the build up to Storm St Just - so not as sharp as it might have been

the rocks on the left are 0.5km distant, and straight on, 0.8km distant, the waves, perhaps 10m high. nobody was surfing.

All painted up and chasing the ladies.

This is a Northern caiman lizard, if I'm not mistaken.

I defy anyone to spot this reptile among the dead leaves I unless you were lucky enough to see it move and even then it moves ,almost glides.

But here it is out of hibernation lured by the weak sunshine that failed to have the same effect on the adders that we had hoped to see and photograph.

Another day maybe so I had to content myself with this offering seizing the moment as you have to at times like these.

Another picture from my trip to South Carolina, this is from King's Mountain.

While I'm weak with birds, I'm hopeless with lizards. I asked the ranger on duty and she was unable to help me with an ID on this guy.

A basking lizard favours me with a subtle smile...

It was so still that I poked it with a leaf to see if it was alive, and it was. It quickly scrambled away into the forest litter where it would be safe from being run over by jogging strollers or stomped on by runners. Reported to H.E.R.P. database. Lizard outside the Olive Press. He's probably drunk.

Who are you looking at?

Male and female wall lizards are often found lying in physical contact throughout the mating season. This behaviour likely evolved in males to secure paternity of the female's clutch. It's function in females is less straightforward (e.g. deter male harassment from multiple males?) and needs further research.
