Living at the end of the line? Buildings of the new residential quarter Baumkirchen Mitte behind abandoned tracks of a former railway depot.
This area was formerly a railway depot named Bahnbetriebswerk München 4. The depot's track area was redeveloped into a new residential quarter called Baumkirchen Mitte. The western part of this redevelopment area was left basically untouched, to let nature regain the former depot alone, this serves now as an ecological park.

Where do we draw the line on cruelty in Nature?
I had the chance to photograph a family of Flycatchers that were nesting in one of the boxes at a friend's house yesterday. I got up early to set up and although I realized that the light was coming from the wrong direction and not nearly enough of it, I couldn't stop myself from spending a couple of hours trying to make the best of the situation. Already knowing that it was going to be mostly a waste of time I made the decision to come back and try the evening light.
Setting up one more time, it wasn't long before my first shot proved to be what I was hoping for. The light and the conditions were as good as anyone could ask for and if I couldn't make this work, it would be no one's fault but my own.
Time after time the adult Flycatcher came back with the things that many of us find so Beautiful. A Butterfly, a Dragonfly, caterpillars of all shapes and sizes. I was somewhat torn between photographing the death of these lovely living creatures that had no choice but give up their lives to simply feed the life of others. As Nature lovers we sometimes struggle with what to photograph, but it is hard to resist capturing the Beauty that everyone should see and can share in.
It was about an hour of patiently waiting for my next shot when a Blue jay suddenly appeared at the opening of the nesting box. It was in the blink of an eye when the Blue jay swooped from the opening of the nesting box and dropped to the ground below. I had already had what I had considered the best pictures of Blue jays that I could possibly ask for and so at that moment I tried to ignore this bird fumbling in the grass in front of me.
As my curiosity got the better of me, I aimed my lens to the ground. Because the grass was just a bit longer than usual for a well manicured lawn, it was difficult to see what the bird was doing.
If you are any kind of animal lover, You can probably imagine the shock that vibrated through me when I finally realized that the Blue Jay had in a split second reached into the opening of the nesting box far enough to pluck out one of the Baby Flycatchers and was now on the ground Killing it.
This turned out to be a rather disturbing moment for me. It was enough to make me pack up my Gear and wander off in a confused state. As an Animal and Nature Lover I struggled to make sense of yesterday and woke up this morning still trying to understand the cruelty that comes along with the Beauty about us.

The AVIF image compression (in the HEIF container) is a very promising format as it provides good image quality in a very small package and is (in comparison to HEIC) free of any licenses. I hope Flickr as well as Google and Microsoft products will soon have full support for this innovation.
Besides the high compression efficiency the big advantage over JPEG is that a color depth per channel of 10 and even 12 bit is supported.
The AVIF is after the conversion always a little more saturated and the contrast seems to be higher. If this is a common thin with AVIF or just one of this certain encoder implementation (used in GIMP).
This photo was taken almost a year ago. I’ve only been up to the lake once this summer. I’ve basically spent the past five months within walking distance from my house. For the unforeseeable future, my husband will continue to work from home, and my daughter will not be returning to the classroom this fall.
Everything feels very uncertain. Things are always unpredictable though. We have this illusion of continuity, but nothing is guaranteed. I’ve been painfully aware of this for well over a decade now. That life can be (and is) very fragile. I don’t want to forget that things can change in a heartbeat. Living like this has made me more grateful somehow.

Cube houses are a set of innovative houses built in Rotterdam and Helmond in the Netherlands, designed by architect Piet Blom and based on the concept of "living as an urban roof": high density housing with sufficient space on the ground level. Blom tilted the cube of a conventional house 45 degrees, and rested it upon a hexagon-shaped pylon. His design represents a village within a city, where each house represents a tree, and all the houses together, a forest.

Das Kubushaus (auch Kubuswohnung, Baumhaus) ist ein Entwurfsmuster für Wohngebäude, das von dem Architekten Piet Blom auf der Basis von würfelförmigen, auf einer Ecke stehenden Baukörpern entwickelt wurde. In Helmond und Rotterdam wurden zwei Gebäudekomplexe errichtet, die modular aus diesen Baukörpern zusammengesetzt wurden.
Der Kubus mit der Kantenlänge von 7,5 Metern ist gekippt und steht auf einer Ecke, so dass drei Seiten nach unten und drei nach oben zeigen. Blom sprach von „Straßenhaus“ und „Himmelshaus“.
