I’m officially confused by the weather. In the city, the trees almost look like we’re in the middle of winter already which gives me some mild anxiety because I haven’t managed to go on a proper forest walk this autumn yet to appreciate beautiful foliage yet. When I look up at the hills surrounding Heidelberg, though, most of the trees still seem to be quite green. So what is it now - is autumn almost over or has it barely even just begun? +

I’m on a bit of mad rampage against bots and fake/ghost followers on my account at the moment. One of my images was shared by a few big accounts earlier this year which has brought me a large amount of new followers, but has sadly also lead to a massive decrease in my overall engagement. When many of your followers never engage with your images - whether that’s because they’re not all that active or because they’re bots -, the algorithm considers your content to be of low interest and as a result promotes it less and less, even to people who are actually interested in seeing your pictures. And so I’ve decided to take matters into my own hands and have been blocking fishy accounts left and right for the past few days. I don’t use Instagram to brand myself as an influencer, to promote a business or whatever else it is people use Instagram for professionally. I use Instagram to share pretty pictures, to express myself creatively and - most importantly - to make genuine connections with other like-minded people, but that’s a goal that’s rather hard to achieve when I often feel as if my pictures just don’t reach the people I hope to reach. Anyway, I know that this is all very much first-world-problem and I don’t even know if this is going to help at all and I do worry that me doing this will look like spammy bot behaviour on my part… but this is what’s been on my mind lately, so I thought I would share it openly! +

I’m back home in Heidelberg now and walking along the Cornish coast seems like a dream from a lost world, a faint memory of an era long gone. I already miss the sound of the crashing waves and the feeling of complete and utter amazement that one only ever seems to encounter in the wilderniss of nature, but now I need to look towards the future and figure out how I can carry the positive effects of this trip on to my everyday life. One of the reasons why I wanted to do a long distance walk alone was to give my mind the opportunity for a complete reset. I was feeling so stressed and anxious and beaten down by life that I knew that nothing short of a little escape from reality would be enough to give me the mental space to understand where I was struggling and what I was struggling with and despite the occasional struggles, I did come to a few important epiphanies. It’s so easy to lose sight of what’s important to you, so my challenge for the next couple of months is going to be to cultivate more mindfulness in my life and to let that mindfulness inspire me in my dreams, wishes and plans. Before setting out on this adventure, I had grand visions in my mind of how I would spend my time. I saw myself listening to inspiring podcasts while walking, pictured myself taking frequent breaks for reading while overlooking the ocean and wanted to take detailed notes in my journal every evening. Needless to say, I actually think it’s a shame to not listen to the crashing waves, usually don’t have time for reading if I want to make it to my destination in time and am too tired/lazy in the evening to journal (I’m also distracted by the fact that Season 10 of The Big Bang Theory is on Netflix UK, but not Netflix Germany, but that’s a different story…). But you know what? Self-reflection has still happened. Just being in nature alone has forced me to be present in the moment in ways other mindfulness exercises probably never could and given me greater mental clarity. It’s amazing what nature and some alone time can do, isn’t it? +

The older I get, the more I begin to realize that struggle is an integral part of the human existence. It’s easy to fall prey to the idea that life should be easy and effortless and then to feel like a failure when you find yourself facing challenges, but the truth is that everyone sometimes struggles and that perfection doesn’t exist. Going through hard times is what helps us grow and realize how strong we can be - because we can never find out what lies hidden inside of us if we are never forced to go beyond what we think are our limits. +

These past few days have really been an emotional rollercoaster. I’ve been incredibly happy walking over the cliffs and utterly at peace with myself and the world feeling the sea wind in my hair, but I have also felt isolated and lonely and confused by my feelings. I’m trying to remember that this is exactly why I wanted to go on this trip, though. That I wanted to challenge myself physically and emotionally, that I wanted to have time to be alone with myself and my struggles, that I never expected this to be easy. Solo travel can push you to your boundaries, but I firmly believe that it’s at those boundaries that personal growth happens. It takes time, sweat and maybe even some tears - but it does happen! -
