This is as fresh as it gets- fresh live poultry for sale for the afternoon lunch. The lady in blue is the seller, and I think the lady in red was the buyer- she had just zoomed in on the motor scooter you see in the background. I've also read stories of bush meat being sold in this market, like squirrels, rats, bats, snakes, deer etc. I could not spot any bush meat. My guide too cleverly avoided the 'fresh meat section' whenever I mentioned it. Which is probably just as well, as I don't think I'd have been too pleased seeing all that anyway. When I was growing up in the Bronx many years ago, there was a market that had live chickens in the back. When you wanted a chicken, you got a very fresh one. Same here.

After reading their reviews on Yelp!, I'm disappointed that we were just visiting and didn't have the opportunity to shop. It sounds like some extraordinary poultry!
I was sitting in a feild talking with my mother when I noticed one of her chickens slowly sneaking up on us. It was really funny. The rest of the chickens were just interested in pecking on the ground but this one just watched us while cautiously creeping closer and closer.
in china, it's customary to bring a gift when visiting someone-- especially when uninvited. depending on the nature of the visit and if favors are sought, the gift can be as cheap as a few fruit or as expensive as luxury teas which they're crazy about here.
my aunt had some guests and they brought a live duck and chicken that they raised themselves. food is super fresh here but...seriously. the duck, not pictured, escaped and chased me shortly after this photo was taken. i screamed bloody murder and ran away while my sadistic but loving family laughed on. in the end, we gave the poultry away because no one wanted to carry out the slaughter.
Jamie-Lee has such a soft and caring heart that she was drawn to these little chickens that were on sale at the market. She wanted us to buy them!

We were on our way back toward the capital on the last few days of our trip, still in southeast Madagascar. Fields of plants used for their sisal fibers are growing in the background, but up on the road being passed by our bus, I found this impressive gentleman with his load of chickens for the market. If you've ever wondered how to take two-dozen live chickens to market on a bicycle, here is the answer. Bound by their legs and with the leggings looped over a couple of posts installed behind the seat, all birds head-down and essentially immobilized as this gentleman pedals to market.
