This is Little Zigzag Falls near Rhododendron, Oregon. I can't believe it took me this long to go there.

I have seen this referred to as Little Zigzag Creek and Little Zigzag river at various places. The map says it's a river. Hiking websites call it a creek.

I did some more exploring of the Little Zigzag Creek today. This time I had the Lensbabies along.

I had to put the tripod into the creek for this one, while I stood beside it trying not to fall in. I was standing on some old, downed trees that had very little rigidity left, and that hung out over the water a few feet. Water flowed underneath, and I worried about falling in. Well, I didn't, and I made it out dry.

Taken last fall on a dark rainy afternoon. Anyone know where I took this? Happy Easter everyone!!! Cliff wins; it is the little zigzag river.

I shot this same scene about 3 weeks prior to when this was shot. I wanted to take a second try at it with a little different light. The shot below is taken from a little ways downstream and looking up towards the waterfall.

This short little section of river is one of the prettiest in my opinion. Our consistent Spring rains made for a vibrant scene.

This is a scene that you'll see not too far from the trailhead. Everytime i walk by it i stop and stare at it and wonder how to capture it.

This is just a piece of a larger scene that gets a little too messy. I've tried shooting it before but have never been completely satisfied with the results.

I think i finally accomplished what i wanted to with this comp. Yes, its a little busy but not so much that it doesn't work. I think the horizontal and vertical lines work well together. And the little cascade with the tiny tree adds a little something too.

I don't know exactly what it is about this specific spot but everytime i walk up the trail and reach this point i just stop and stare. I think all the trees coupled WITH the river just appeals to me. I left it slightly dark. Please double-click photo to view large. Thanks for having a look.

This shot was taken just below where my last posting was shot. I really don't have a clue how to shoot to get the sunstar effect but i had fun trying.

In all my travels up through this area I have never seen one other person there. Really a nice quiet wilderness experience.

I have always liked this section of the Little ZigZag River. I like how it rounds the curve and then fans out. The mossy wall on the left is another feature that makes this such a nice spot. You can see by just past 8:00am the sun was reaching high enough to start blowing things out. Thanks for having a look. Double-click to view it large.

This shot turned out a little funky but i wanted to post it anyway. For those of you who have been to Little ZigZag Falls this scene can be found a ways above the falls.

The sun was just about to put an end to my morning but i like the light hitting the trees up there. I also like the look of the water although the color is a little screwy. On my end the shot almost has a 3-d feel to it.

This is one of those shots where you plant yourself as carefully as you can in the middle of the river and hold the camera / tripod as still as possible and hope for the best. I just thought the water action on this part of the river was pretty. Double-click to view large. Thanks for looking!!!

This is a shot that I've been hanging on to for a while and decided to post. Not a real barn burner but one of those scenes that kind of spoke to me. The main channel of the Little ZigZag River was behind me while this small section of the river found its way through the surrounding forest. This little area of the river was kind of unique looking. It had two completely different comps side by side together. I shot them both in this piece to display that and also shot each side individually. I'm not sure if there's anything that pulls the viewer into this specific scene but i still liked the varied differences in the river here. If you are tired of the Little ZigZag River I understand but i love this place and there's so much to view on it.

I primarily concentrated on three specific areas of this gorgeous mountain river. I've never really spent much time at this specific location you see above but i loved it. To the right of the big leaves is a small creek that magically appears out of the hillside. I've said it before and i'll say it again this is one of my all time favorite places to shoot. The morning light against the many Red Cedars is a real treat.

This little section of beauty really caught my eye with its crystal clear water. I spent about 15 minutes in the water and my feet were about as cold as I ever felt them. I took three or four different comps so I'll eventually throw those up as well. I'm not sure if the placement of the tree over the water is distracting or not but i really wanted to show the river-bed under the water. Thank you for looking.

I was there, it looked good, and I think she deserved the beauty shots given the 2000 miles this trip consisted of...

www.flickriver.com/photos/cliffzener/

This particular scene has always caught my eye but I've never felt too good about the results. This take is closer to what I've wanted to convey.

The draw for me here is how the narrow creek appears from the left and then makes a sweeping turn toward the viewer and fanning out in the process. The redish river rock adds a little something to the scene as well.

Lots of downed trees over the Little Zigzag River. It makes good fish habitat when the end up in the water.

Along the trail to Little Zigzag Falls

From the trailhead for the short trail to Little Zigzag Falls, you can also head uphill on the old Highway 26. Before the current big highway was built, the old two-lane highway had a very squiggly path. This is where the old highway crossed the Little Zigzag River.

What a pleasant little river this was to walk beside! Babbling over the rocks, sounding pleasant and looking lovely. It was just a short 0.3 mile walk upstream to the waterfall.
