I spent al little time at Little Zigzag Creek this morning, before the temperature hit 100º. There was occasional cloud cover interspersed with brillient sunlight mingling with the trees. It was a good day to be on the slopes of Mount Hood.

I have been having trouble printing pictures lately. I have to lighten them up quite a but from how they first look, despite having calibrated my printer, and, I thought, my monitor, (although I had to do it based on how my prints look. Well, I finally got my ColorMunki working properly. It turns out that my computer does not like special characters in the file names of the icc profiles. I removed the underscore in the name, and it worked flawlessly. Not I can print with wild abandon.

I had to put the tripod into the creek for this one, while I stood beside it trying not to fall in. I was standing on some old, downed trees that had very little rigidity left, and that hung out over the water a few feet. Water flowed underneath, and I worried about falling in. Well, I didn't, and I made it out dry.

Have I taken this one too far? I don't know. There was a time when I would have though an image like this was overdone, but it's really a color version of what I do with black and white. It's enhanced reality.

This is Little Zigzag Falls near Rhododendron, Oregon. It is located in the foothills west of Mt. Hood. I am taking a hatis from my explorations of the Columbia Gorge to focus on the Mt. Hood area. I hope to do some hikng and more photography in the area very soon. I want to see how the seasons change there.

This is from an early Autumn hike on the slopes of Mount Hood. The highlights in the water were very difficult to restrain, but ended up mostly okay. My limitations for Photoshop are evident, but the picture is mostly good.

Seasons of change. Spring and Autumn are interesting for photography. I wasn't able to get out much this fall, so I don't have many pictures to show for it. I always regret missing peak foliage, but it wasn't to be this year. So, I present to you a spring picture earlier this year.

Snow along Little Zigzag Creek.

The Little Zigzag River in it's Winter white.

I figured that it's time to set the desert shots aside for now. The weather here in Oregon has been less than conducive to shooting than to processing lately. I have a ton more Grand Canyon shots to post, but I'm itching to put some more green in my photostream, even if it's covered in snow.

Dang it's cold out there tonight.

Happy Waterfall Wednesday!

This is a vertical comp taken the same day as the last shot that I posted from here. I like this processing better. I hurried the last one.

Thank you Gary for finding my glasses.....

I'm so sorry about your D90...... I really feel bad about that,

I guess they should not let the two of us go together into the woods....

I enjoyed the rock that split the flow of the stream in to two flows. I worked several different comps, both horizontal and vertical. Not sure I had a fav, but settled on this one to develop.

Little Zigzag Falls in Ice part deux.

I took a little more time processing this one, as opposed to the last. I had a couple of comments that it was dark. The falls is in a sheltered and shadowed area that is inherently dark. I was finding that by lightening the image the snow, ice and water had a tendency of blowing out real easy. How does this one look compared to the last one?

I didn't have my waders with me, so didn't get into the water for fear of frost bite. I may try to go back tomorrow or Saturday morning and bring my rubber boots. : )

Sometimes the streams in the NW can seem quite messy as all the trees and limbs age and fall. Sometimes getting a good composition is a matter of making order from chaos, symmetry from a mess, etc.

I spent a long time at this location pondering the cycle of nature and everything feeds everything else. What may seem like a mess is merely a moment in time in a longstanding cycle of growth, death and rebirth. I felt a strong connection at this location to my surroundings and this connection helped me to see my compositions and translate them better in to the camera.

A little international hike with my family and my friends Gary Randall and Hillary Younger

A shot that I made while shooting with my buddy Nick Grier. We had planned to shoot a couple of creeks and waterfalls up here near Mount Hood but didn't expect the sun to shine.

This photo was made the other day while I was shooting with Nick Grier. We had planned the day ahead of time and so we both knew that we would be victim of the conditions and the conditions turned out to be beautiful... unless you planned on shooting a couple waterfalls. How many enjoy shooting a waterfall in the middle of the dry hot day with direct sun light shining into the scene in one area and shadows as dark as night in other areas?

I just used a CP on this shot. Processed in ACR finished in CS4... although it only needed some localized contrast adjustments.

The Wonderful Little Zigzag Falls!!!

We could not get up to Yocum Falls because it is a 'snowshoe' mandatory right now. Once I sunk to my hips(I am 6' 3"), I knew it was hopeless. I am going back to Yocum with snowshoes soon. So, Gary Meyers and Josh Kulla and I traveled to the Little Zigzag Falls and were blown away at the winter wonderland that we found. There was 3 feet of snow plus an additional 18-24 inches of fresh on top of that 3 feet!!! OMG!! I have a lot of shots from this and I will post them over the next few days:) Here is a shot from down low on the water.

Taken along the flanks of Mt Hood, walking a peaceful trail, alone with nature and my thoughts

A Cascade Mountain Creek showing some of her vibrant colors.

This was taken on the Oak Grove Fork of the Clackamas River. It was early morning and a chill filled the air.

So... You're walking along a creek, alone and not paying too much attention to much more than what might be a good comp for a shot when all of a sudden, through some ferns and below a stump you see what looks like a human skull. I could hardly believe what I was seeing. I almost turned and ran, but decided that I should at least check it out before I called in the CSI team. As I get closer it looks more as if I was right... but after I got close enough to get a good luck I figured out that it was a plastic Halloween decoration. I'm glad that I didn't call 911. LOL

I propped it up on this stump and took its picture. It's now my new photography mascot. I named him Greg. : )

This shot was taken along the Little Zigzag near the Paradise Park trail head between Rhododendron and Government Camp.

As shot, SOOC. : )

A little different take on a scene I posted earlier. In fact...I have a couple other angles I'll post along the way.

This little creek~~un-named I presume~~ was so much fun to shoot on. The only thing I didn't like was the light rain.

My wipe cloth wasn't that good but have a got a better one since...thanks Victor!!

This is one of many beautiful areas in the Mt. Hood National Forest that is loaded with gorgeous scenes to shoot.
