I’ve been using my unemployed time between filling out applications to learn set building; I set up a studio in my garage and built this surface for a specific stop motion project that I’ve been mulling over for quite some time. I decided to use it for a quick Lego shot.

I’m having a blast learning what works and what doesn’t and have learned some excellent tricks by trial and error. I still say the best way to learn anything is to start. I utilized some aluminum screen, cardboard tubes, floor coating samples, drywall putty, spray paint, coconut shell carbon, wire, ducktape, and some old bird feed I found in the pantry… basically anything I can think of and reuse in some way. I think it’s coming together nicely.

I took this shot in the blistering cold. A fog had rolled in while I was hiking up the mountains near my home. It was somewhat of an inversion and the temperature dropped from 20 degrees F down to 10 F (-12C).

I had planned on capturing a few shots like this one taken in a cavity of a sandstone cliff. I waited till dark to maximize the colors using my Litra Gear. I used the LitraPro for a slight highlight in the front and two LitraTorch2.0s to light from the back and sides. I threw handfuls of sand until I got the dusty look I was going for.

I hiked out using LitraTorches after finishing this shoot. It was a hard shoot due to temps but it was also a good experience to try something I hadn’t done before. I am looking forward to more night shoots (in the summer!).

Light Wonder

Light is amazing to me. I work in the transit and telecommunications industry and we use light everywhere. Phones, CCTV, Audio, Images, Security, Safety, Controls, Management, it’s all controlled and communicated with light. Light traveling at 186,000 miles per second. The phone in your hand is made possible by light. The information highway of the internet is powered by light through an intricate and complex system of fiber optics technology combined with light. Without light there would be no color. Without light there would be no warmth, without light we would not have the knowledge we have at our fingertips everyday. I am greatful for light. Intelligence is light and light is intelligence.

This image was captured with light through a light sensitive sensor in my new full frame camera the Sony #a7r #alpha #alpha7r #sonyalpha #sonyalpha7r. I love capturing light and colors. This particular shot was taken with a vintage Russian lens the Helios 44-2 #helios44_2. I also utilized three Litra Torches #litragear #litratorch2 #litratorch. One with a blue gel filter for the background and one with a red gel filter to light the fibers. The third I utilized for the built in magnet to hold the fiber optic lamp on the side of a filing cabinet in my office. #mylitracapture

I actually took this shot yesterday morning after dropping my my kiddos off at school.

There is an abandoned miniature golf place near there that is a favorite spot for me in the mornings because the sunrise is at the perfect angle to make some awesome bokeh. This particular morning had quite a bit of cloud cover and made for an interesting grey light lacking shadows...

Got this figure from Minifigure.com. Such a cool detailed rendition of Ebenezer Scrooge. The book even has the front page in tiny but legible print. I purchased my wife a remake of the original Christmas Carol book with a red cover last year and it worked perfectly here as a base.

I couldn’t get the iron concretion to balance on his hand so I ended up using a piece of my chewing gum to attach it. From now on I will make sure to have chewing gum in my camera bag! It tastes way better than blue tack.

Iron oxide concretions (aka Moqui Marbles), occur naturally in Navajo sandstone. They consist of sandstone cemented together with hematite and goethite. Thanks to my bro Nathan Arizona for gifting me this awesome lens!

Found an old antique lamp and took it apart to utilize just this texture glass portion. I’ve been interested lately by utilizing other objects as backgrounds. The Rubik’s cube in the back of this shot made a great spacey robot wall.

I forgot about this bike I got a few months ago at the hobby store. It’s meant to mount to a gas powered remote controlled Jeep but works perfect for 6” figures! Paired up nicely with my Jawa. Although I may end up redoing this shot at the sand dunes.😀👍

My wife helped out by hanging the figure and trying to get to stop twirling has it hung there... I think I need to buy some bailing wire - might make it easier.😂

I purchased this Leviathan figure from Fortnite made by Jazwares. I am very impressed by the quality of the figure - and it’s super poseable with 40 point of articulation!

We went to the riparian preserve in Gilbert, AZ over the weekend and I snapped this shot with the vintage Helios 44-2. I’ve been using the lensbaby Twist 60 quite often but I just love the look of the Helios. It really cannot be replicated. It’s just got so much character in the blur.

I thought this Newton Scamander character was very hard to understand in the movie - his words were usually slurred and muffled. Maybe that’s how his character was supposed to be portrayed - but it was difficult to follow anything he said.

So I was thinking about how to do this shot for quite awhile. It finally came together when I found some almond Rocha foil wrappers. I wanted to have the group of hazmat guys investigating unaware that the creature that mangled the metal was watching them curiously.😄 I think it turned out fairly well but I may revisit the idea in the future. I used the Iron Giant by 1000Toys, and Preiser H0 scale miniatures.

One of the many reasons I live in Cedar City, Utah is the dark skies all around. I can drive in nearly any direction at night and be to a spot where the milky way galaxy 🌌 is easily seen within about ten minutes. It never ceases to amaze me the beauty of the stars. Looking deep into the cosmos I wonder at all the worlds without number and how I’m actually looking back in time. There’s just something about being under starlight on a moonless night that is a great recharge for me. I guess it gives me a deeper appreciation that our world is only a small blip in the vast amount of Gods creation yet, he still considers our thoughts and desires and lives.

I work in designing telecommunications systems for light rail and we use lots of fiber optics in our designs. It never ceases to amaze me at the amount of information that is transported effortlessly through light. I found a fiber optic lamp on our conference room table and this image resulted.

I got to embarrass my wife with this shot! She graciously held my LitraTorch with a red filter from outside of this play structure at a park. Our kiddos were running around playing tag and I was underneath the play set setting up this shot. Several other folks walked past wondering what in the heck she was doing pointing a red light at the playground equipment... they couldn’t see me.😂👍
