Haremhab as the scribe of the King,Reign of Tutankhamen,ca.1336-1323 BC,Dynasty 18,granodiorite (medium)

Haremhab was a royal scribe and general of the army under Tutankhamen. He continued to serve during the reign of Aya and eventually succeeded Aya as king. This statue was made before Haremhab ascended the throne.By having himself depicted as a scribe,Haremhab declares himself to be among the elite group of literate individuals, thus following a tradition more than a thousand years of depicting great officials as men of wisdom and learning.

He sits erect, but relaxed, his gaze slightly down.Across his knees he unrolls a papyrus scroll on which he has composed a hymn of the god Thoth, patron of scribes.A shell containing ink lies on his left knee.Over his left shoulder is a strap with a miniature scribe kit attached to each end.A figure of the god Amun is incised on his forearm, perhaps indicating a tattoo.

In this statue the unlined youthful face is belied by the potbelly and the folds of flesh beneath the breasts. These artistic conventions indicates that the subject had reached the age of wisdom.Although the scribal pose exhibits the frontal orientation common to all formal Egyptian statue,it may be appreciated more fully as a piece of sculpture in the round since it has no back pillar. The youthful face reflects the features seen on many statues depicting Tutankhamen and the style of this magnificent life-size sculpture retains some of the softness and naturalism of the earlier Amarna period while looking forward to later Ramesside art.

This is my entry to the 5th round of this year's RogueOlympics. The topic is 'Wildlife’. As always, the challenge is to use no more than 101 pieces. This piece of work consists of 95 pieces.

This weeks topic was a vast and welcome playground for character design. As the German topic was 'Tierwesen' which refers more to the phantastic creatures, I immediately had a thousand different animals come to mind that I wanted to build. As always, at the given piece limit, I had to pick a rather simple object to be adequately displayed.

Let me introduce to you A.J. He's the kind of bug the whole forest hates and it's also what A.J. loves about his life. He gets to be the guy nobody can stand cause he's just so literate and sophisticated in his entire doing. So, you guessed it: A.J. stands for 'annoying jerk'. Seriously, A.J. Get a bug life.

Living, as I do, off the "beaten track," the opportunities to meet online friends are few and far between. This was one of them. Mike (L1v32tr4v3l) was visiting friends and family in Connecticut and yesterday he drove up to have lunch with me in Walpole. He's a complete delight -- funny, smart and literate, with an exuberant vitality. It goes without saying that he's also very easy on the eye. Mike -- it was a merry meeting, my friend, and I look forward to welcoming you back again, soon!

Late evening on hot and humid August evening in Nebraska. Warnings popped up about an hour before this storm was even visible to the eye over the horizon at sunset.

Spectacular Colors emitting from this stacked supercell. Cloud to Cloud Lightning shooting off every few seconds made this a storm chasers dreamscape.

Gear in hand that evening I traveled north out of Odessa Nebraska. Now about 2 miles to the east of Amherst Nebraska. This storm was strengthening and moving almost due south, southeast, meaning it was coming right at my location.

It would be a Historic Event to capture! Now remastered to the original color with no enhancements. Enjoy!

It has been awhile since I have come back to this set of images.

Original Set of Images can be found here on Flickr

This set of images is and still has been the most stolen set of images I have on the web on several platforms. Literately millions of views with no link back to my work or my photostream. Probably why I haven't revisited this set til now.

Just to let you know, those images were WAY over processed, over saturated etc. Yes I'm guilty. But it was the way I did things back then. I don't anymore.

Every year I go back and edit a few sets of images that deserve to be re-edited or reprocess from raw. I'm also adding several images from this set I didn't share last time around.

Beautiful storm photography from my best of 2014 Collection!

Was quit scary at times taking some of the shots at the Fairy Pools, i was very close to the edge and could of easy lost balance and fell as some points deep as 10ft +. I didn't get the chance to go all the way up, next time though. I could of spent a full day literately all day taking photo's here.

This buck decided to cross the street...so fun to watch the buck literately flow through the vegetation. first of two consecutive frames

She covers her shame begging on the path to Taragadh, and mind you it is insanely dry and hot ..and she will sit there for hours as devotees going upwards to the Chilla of Ghaus Pak or the Dargah at Taragadh will throw her a few coins.

This is the sad part of existence , he children cluster around her and without throwing doubts on her poverty , where is her husband.I dd not ask her most of the beggars I shot in Mumbai at Bandra where I stay are forced into beggary by their husbands in most cases.

And so you know how the hijab saves her from ignominy and degradation.

And I am really upset by a news in Times of India , Hands chopped off for Prophet insult by Muslim fanatics in Kerala of a college lecturer accusing him of defaming the Holy Prophet.

And Kerala the most literate and Gods own country.. Shame.

The other sad news was the fall of a six year old boy from a luxury hotel in Juhu.. Saddening.

Well this is the last segment of this memory card I have place about 99 pictures for uploading , another card remains before my Ajmer travelogue in Sufi hinterland comes to an end.

Taragadh was introspection of street pain..though it is a hilly trail, I shot it as a street photographer .

Street photography is an impulsive piece of madness you shoot with your inner eye and let the camera do the rest.

Using a digital camera makes it much easier and as much as I liked shoting film and slide I could never do it again my world is larger than 35 frames of Film.

I post everything I shoot only the dark black duds I remove.

I dont mess my pictures with cropping nor do I re-size them..they come hot and burning like loaves from the furnace of life.

And I am cooped up at home ., earlier Bandhs I took my camera to shoot the shut shops and the lonely streets , but my world is a world of people I shoot humanity and would not be able to shoot a blank canvas..

Of course for the beggar there is no Bandh at all.

Without any political overviews or influence I am apolitical by nature but yes..

I support the Bandh as the poor Mans suffering the rock spiraling prices is a silent way of eliminating him completely..driving him away from Mumbai..making it only the rich mans paradise.

I left this post incomplete and ran down as I saw BJP protesters running beneath my house to shoot the events..arrest of Advocate Ashish Shelar BJP leader and I walked towards the Sea Link to shoot protesters burning tyres and shouting slogans.

Yes, a self-portrait. Not beautified. Raw file converter 3, and made a bit more extreme in Luminar 4. The 7Artisans manual lens at F 1.2 and at very close range, as here, will not produce sharp but 'interesting' images. Outside light plus, from below, a daylight LED lamp.

The use of hieroglyphic writing arose from proto-literate symbol systems in the Early Bronze Age, around the 32nd century BC (Naqada III), with the first decipherable sentence written in the Egyptian language dating to the Second Dynasty (28th century BC). Egyptian hieroglyphs developed into a mature writing system used for monumental inscription in the classical language of the Middle Kingdom period; during this period, the system made use of about 900 distinct signs. The use of this writing system continued through the New Kingdom and Late Period, and on into the Persian and Ptolemaic periods. Late survivals of hieroglyphic use are found well into the Roman period, extending into the 4th century AD.

Striped Butte with Mengel's Camp roof

William Lewis Manly was one of the first literate Americans to see this mountain and he wrote “...stands a peak, seemingly alone, and built up of many colored rocks, in belts, and the whole looks as if tipped with steel.”

Todays Macro Monday theme is "In Between" and I thought about the gaps at the back of a fountain pen nib.

I'm pretty computer literate, I can hack my way through all sorts of programming languages and tend to learn software applications fairly painlessly, but I still have a bit of an obsession in writing in fountain pen.

I find it steadies my thought process down and gives me thinking time. I even take great care in finding specific inks to write in.

Ranging from British Racing Green when I want to be patriotic through to my everyday ink that I have imported from Japan just because it writes smoothly and I love the colour.

I also think my pens will make a nice gift for my children when I'm too old to use them. They're my everyday pens so they've seen their share of action but I think if you have something beautifully made then it's to be used not stored and hidden away.

I think graphite was more entertaining 10,00 years ago. At least more literate and decisive

Mask of the bow

... "The figurehead is a decorative figure usually carved in wood and ornamented or painted that formerly carried the ships in the upper part of the tajamar, according to the hierarchy of the boat that adorned.

Its use was very widespread between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries in the galleons that sailed the seas. Gradually it was disappearing with the irruption of the steel ships of the First World War.

It had the double purpose of decorating and serving as identification to a seafaring society, in those times not literate as a whole ... "

85/365 Today I'm having a delightful inner battle somewhere deep within my head, which is relatively amusing to watch myself do, because today I'm half "golden retriever with my head sticking out of the window" half "war torn poet smoking cigars in a long dark raincoat", as a wickedly literate friend of mine would put it.

So for my 365 I'm editing up an old shot that I didn't know what to do with, because I needed to express said inner angsty battle - but I also needed to actually do some work and go to the gym, because it's easier to fight inner angsty battles when you have abs. It's funny, I've experienced so many emotions on either end of the spectrum lately, but I haven't experienced laughing at myself WHILE experiencing them before! Go figure

Thanks for the comments on my last post of this Maple tree. I’ve been itching to go out and hunt for more Fall colors but weather here lately haven’t been too promising when I’m away from my daily work. So here it is my other perspective on this famous tree at the Portland Japanese Garden. A more intimate approach of this tree to show case these vein looking branches. This shot was captured couple minutes before my other sunburst shot.

Overall, after I literately camped in front of this maple tree for more than an hour and half I was happy, glad and humble that the sun finally shined over this tree creating this red and green luminance of Fall colors.

Critiques and comments are always welcome.

"Save the girl child campaign (an Internet-driven advocacy effort) by SOCIAL GEOGRAPHIC"

Photo: Firoz Ahmad Firoz

"Worst of all, violence against women and girls continues unabated in every continent, country and culture. It takes a devastating toll on women’s lives, on their families and on society as a whole. Most societies prohibit such violence -- yet the reality is that, too often, it is covered up or tacitly condoned." (UN SECRETARY-GENERAL in International Women’s Day 2007 Message.)

“Almost every country in the world still has laws that discriminate against women, and promises to remedy this have not been kept.” (UN High Commissioner for Human Rights on the eve of International Women's Day 2008)

According to one United Nations estimate, 113 to 200 million women are “demographically missing” from the world today. That is to say, there should be 113 to 200 million more women walking the earth, who aren’t. By that same estimate, 1.5 to 3 million women and girls lose their lives every year because of gender-based neglect or gender-based violence and Sexual Violence in Conflict ( Read more about UN Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict www.stoprapenow.org/ ). Millions of young women disappear in their native land every year. Many of them are found later being held against their will in other places and forced into prostitution. According to the UNICEF ( www.unicef.org/gender/index_factsandfigures.html ),Girls between 13 and 18 years of age constitute the largest group in the sex industry. It is estimated that around 500,000 girls below 18 are victims of trafficking each year. United Nations agencies estimated that every year 3 million girls are at risk of undergoing the procedure – which involves the partial or total removal of external female genital organs – that some 140 million women, mostly in Asia, the Middle East and in Africa, have already endured. We can point a finger at poverty. But poverty alone does not result in these women’s deaths and suffering; the blame also falls on the social system and attitudes of the societies.

India alone accounts for more than 50 million of the women who are “missing” due to female foeticide - the sex-selective abortion of girls, dowry death, gender-based neglect and all forms of violence against women.

Since the late 1970s when the technology for sex determination first came into being, sex selective abortion has unleashed a saga of horror in India. Experts are calling it "sanitized barbarism".The 2001 Census conducted by Government of India, showed a sharp decline in the child sex ratio in 80% districts of India. The Census Report of 2001 reveals a highly skewed child sex ratio (0-6 year-olds), that fell from 945 females per 1,000 males in 1991 to an all-time low of 927 in 2001. Additional data from the India’s birth and death registration service indicates that the figures have further fallen to fewer than 900 females per 1,000 men over the last few years. In some parts of the country, the sex ratio of girls to boys has dropped to less than 800:1,000. It's alarming that even liberal states like those in the northeast have taken to disposing of girls. Worryingly, the trend is far stronger in urban rather than rural areas, and among literate rather than illiterate women, exploding the myth that growing affluence and spread of basic education alone will result in the erosion of gender bias.

The United Nations has expressed serious concern about the situation.

Over the years, laws have been made stricter and the punishment too is more stringent now. But since many people manage to evade punishment, others too feel inclined to take the risk. Just look at the way sex-determination tests go on despite a stiff ban on them. Only if the message goes out loud and clear that nobody who dares to snuff out the life of a female foetus would escape effective legal system would the practice end. It is only by a combination of monitoring, education, socio-cultural campaigns, and effective legal implementation that the deep-seated attitudes and practices against women and girls can be eroded.

The decline in the sex ratio and the millions of Missing Women are indicators of the feudal patriarchal resurgence. Violence against women has gone public – whether it is dowry murders, the practice of female genital mutilation , honour killings, sex selective abortions or death sentences awarded to young lovers from different communities by caste councils, rapes and killings in communal and caste violence, it is only women’s and human rights groups who are protesting – the public and institutional response to these trends is very minimal.

Millions of women suffer from discrimination in the world of work. This not only violates a most basic human right, but has wider social and economic consequences. Most of the governments turn a blind eye to illegal practices and enact and enforce discriminatory laws. Corporations and private individuals engage in abusive and discriminatory practices without fear of legal system. Sexual harassment and violence in the workplace are common and constant threats to working women’s lives and livelihoods.

More women are working now than ever before, but they are also more likely than men to get low-productivity, low-paid and vulnerable jobs, with no social protection, basic rights nor voice at work according to a new report by the International Labour Organization (ILO) issued for International Women’s Day 2008.

By that same estimate, 1.5 to 3 million women and girls lose their lives every year because of gender-based neglect or gender-based violence and Sexual Violence in Conflict.

In addition to torture, sexual violence and rape by occupation forces, a great number of women and girls are kept locked up in their homes by a very real fear of abduction and criminal abuse. In war and conflicts, girls and women have been denied their human right, including the right to health, education and employment. “Sexual violence in conflict zones is indeed a security concern. We affirm that sexual violence profoundly affects not only the health and safety of women, but the economic and social stability of their nations” –US Secretary of State, Condoleeza Rice, 19 June 2008 (Read more about UN Action against Sexual Violence in Conflict www.stoprapenow.org/ ).

Millions of young women disappear in their native land every year. Many of them are found later being held against their will in other places and forced into prostitution. It is estimated that around 500,000 girls below 18 are victims of trafficking each year. The victims of trafficking and female migrants are sometimes unfairly blamed for spreading HIV when the reality is that they are often the victims.

According to the UNAIDS around 17.3 million, women (almost half of the total number of HIV-positive) living with HIV ( www.unaids.org ). While HIV is often driven by poverty, it is also associated with inequality, gender-based abuses and economic transition. The relationship between abuses of women's rights and their vulnerability to AIDS is alarming. Violence and discrimination prevents women from freely accessing HIV/AIDS information, from negotiating condom use, and from resisting unprotected sex with an HIV-positive partner, yet most of the governments have failed to take any meaningful steps to prevent and punish such abuse.

United Nations agencies estimated that every year 3 million girls are at risk of undergoing the procedure – which involves the partial or total removal of external female genital organs – that some 140 million women, mostly in Asia, the Middle East and in Africa, have already endured.

Orchid, with no root, and not touching the earth. Symbolic meaning of a literate scholar of Ching dynasty, had to stay on his homeland -Taiwan and be ruled by Japan empire. The feeling of lost. I-nan 1923

We have recently had a mouse problem in our home. With our place being much more warm and cozy than the outdoors, some of them decided to try to move in. We caught 11 and sent them to a much better place, if you know what I mean. Now, along with the little micie problem I am riddled with guilt. These three masterminds slipped themselves into an envelope, into the mail, and ended up in my mailbox today. Since there was no return address, I am unable to send them back to their warm and cozy home (I assume they came from someone else's house, since they are so very computer-literate). My 2 year old son has decided to adopt them, and is currently making sure they are snuggled into bed with him. I okayed this, since they are much cuter than their siblings who were once trying to move in here.
