El lago ha crecido desde entonces variablemente debido al derretimiento de los glaciares en Islandia. La laguna se ubica a 1,5 km de la orilla del mar y tiene una superficie de unos 18 km2. Se convirtió recientemente en el lago más profundo en Islandia con más de 248 metros de profundidad.
El tamaño de la laguna se ha cuadruplicado desde 1970. Se considera como una de las maravillas naturales de Islandia. La laguna se sitúa al pie de la carretera nacional n°1 entre Höfn y Skaftafell. Presenta un pintoresco desfile de icebergs blancos y azules luminosos moviéndose lentamente a través de su extensión. El color negro de algunos icebergs es debido a la ceniza de las erupciones y aún no han dado la vuelta al derretirse la base sumergida.

Vista en dirección Este desde el recodo final de la playa de Oyambre, espacio natural protegido que incluye una superficie dunar y un largo arenal de mas de tres kilómetros.
La playa, con la pleamar desaparece totalmente. Ello es debido a que las fuerte mareas que se han ido registrando este invierno han arrastrado gran parte del arenal y derribado literalmente buena parte de las dunas.
Al fondo avistamos Trasvia, enclave que pertenece al Ayuntamiento de Comillas. Sus casas, de aire residencial en su mayoría, están orientadas hacia el mar y presentan diversos accesos a la desembocadura de La Rabia. Mas a la izquierda ( solo en sentido geográfico ), podemos ver la Universidad Pontificia de Comillas, construida hace mas de un siglo gracias al mecenazgo de Claudio Lopez Bru, segundo marqués de Comillas.
Todo un conjunto natural y de gran belleza, que en esta ocasión hemos podido captar gracias a un gélido viento nordeste que corta como un cuchillo y disipa las nubes. Nadie se baña. Solo los surfistas se aventuran.

Traction Avant, literalmente “tracción delantera”, ya que fue el primer coche producido en serie que introdujo la tracción delantera. Hasta entonces los automóviles tenían el motor delantero y la tracción trasera, lo que llevaba a tener un “tunel de transmisión” entre uno y otro; las dos soluciones al problema fueron: la tracción delantera de este modelo y el motor trasero del Volkswagen escarabajo (casi de la misma época). En España fue conocido como Citroën 11 y se le dio, incorrectamente, el apodo de “pato”, debido a su parecido con un modelo anterior, que llevaba un pato grabado en los estribos.
El Citroën Tracción Avant era de línea muy moderna para la época. La carrocería fue obra de un escultor italiano, Flaminio Bertoni, que también diseñó el 2CV y el Citroën DS (el famoso “tiburón”)
Se fabricaron 759.123 unidades de diversas versiones a lo largo de 23 años.

Sai-no-mori (literal meaning: woods of colors) Iruma park is a city park in Iruma, Saitama. It has two ponds, a small "upper" pond with a fountain, a larger "lower" pond which is more natural, a narrow stream connecting two, and a lot of greenery around.
It is located at about 15 minutes walking distance from the Irumashi station, which is 40 minutes train ride away from Ikebukuro.
This is a capture from an autumn visit on a clear day with a few clouds. So the greenery has turned into bare branches.

This was how I felt when it came to achieving this image. Each time I went, the conditions were only adequate and therefore, so too was the result. On this stormy day, I thought the clouds might part and let the sunshine through, but after hours waiting, it was not to be. So, admittedly I packed up to move on.
However, when I saw a different opportunity it was because the light was shining through and maybe it would pass over my spot. I ran as best I could which was not very well. The camera was still on the settings needed and my tripod marks revealed where I had been. Sure enough, the light came and changed everything giving the final image life. I almost titled this shot "Paid For", because as I was waiting, I was either bitten or stung by some rather large flyer on the arm. The things we do to get the shot. Yikes!
With the non-tofu-eating hawk around, I decided to play lifeguard for the little songbirds. The sparrows splash in the pool, but these goldfinches wanted to sip.
No need to comment. But watching wild birds also "fuels" me ;)

Small brownish wren, usually rather plain overall, with dark barring on the wings and tail. Lacks white eyebrow. Occurs in a variety of open or semiopen habitats, including suburbs, parks, rural farmland, and woodland edge with thick tangles. Larger, longer tailed, and generally slightly paler than Winter and Pacific Wrens. Often perches conspicuously when singing, but otherwise fairly secretive. Listen for bubbly song of chatters and trills, and harsh scolding calls. (eBird)

One of my favourite birds! For such a small bird they are both incredibly vocal and very fierce. This one was singing up a literal wind storm but didn't seem the least fussed about the wind mussing his feathers.

El Pont del Petroli era una antigua instalación que servía para descargar productos petrolíferos en la playa. No literalmente en la playa, claro, sino en unos enormes depósitos instalados a pie de mar.
Los barcos de gran tonelaje que transportaban petróleo en sus bodegas no se podían acercar a la costa, así que idearon esta pasarela de 250 metros para conectarlos con la factoría.

This film, about two small boys from very different families is one that will haunt me forever. Very powerful and, although not a true story, could easily have been. My picture represents the literal fence between them, one side beautiful the other a concentration camp.

A literal mixture of red and yellow, these flowers are a cross-over between the two emotions that yellow and red roses convey, i.e. friendship and love, respectively. The vibrant, cheerful and blazing energy of these flowers also makes them the wild child of the rose family. These fiery blooms will make it extremely easy for you to convey your emotions of fascination as well as passion towards someone.
The Literal translation of this mountain range is "snow-covered saw" These three peaks are named (from left to right) Pico Cristóbal Colón, Pico Simón Bolívar and Pico Santander. The first two are exactly the same height of 5775 m. Photographed 6 am at sunrise

Los Cárpatos están situados en el este de Europa. Estas montañas forman una de las cadenas más grandes de este continente. A pesar de formar parte de seis países diferentes los montes Cárpatos constituyen por sí mismos una región geográfica bien delimitada, con importantes recursos naturales y modos de vida autóctonos. Los Cárpatos, con sus 1.500 km de longitud y 150 km de anchura, forman un arco con la concavidad dirigida hacia el oeste.
La parte occidental del sistema montañoso distribuye sus vertientes entre dos países: la septentrional forma parte de Polonia y la meridional ocupa Eslovaquia, aunque sus estribaciones alcanzan también el territorio húngaro. Flamingo, created by American artist Alexander Calder, is a 53-foot (16 m) tall stabile located in the Federal Plaza in Chicago. Calder gave the stabile its color, which has come to be called "Calder red",[5] to offset it from the black and steel surroundings of nearby office buildings, including the Ludwig Mies van der Rohe-designed Kluczynski Federal Building. Despite the massive size of the sculpture, its design is such that viewers can walk underneath and around it, thus enabling one to perceive it in human scale. The shape of Flamingo alludes to the natural and animal realm, which is a stark contrast to more literal interpretations in sculpture from previous decades.

Het Zuiderspui (Literal translation: The South Drain), life and living on an old city wall in Enkhuizen.
The houses on the South Spui are built on the narrow strip of disused since the medieval city wall was demolished in 1600.
The lack of a retrospective at the house gave rise to the construction of wooden balconies at the rear, which in the 18th and 19th centuries were on boarded up and as added rooms in use at the houses.
This is what we saw during our Cycling holiday in Noord-Holland, the Netherlands, where we have cycled through the beautiful landscape.

El hibiscus, al menos aquí, en el centro de la Península Ibérica, durante el verano, es, como en la frase del dicho, pero literalmente: “flor de un día” que a veces incluso le cuesta completar. Pero cuando llega el otoño, se desarrolla más lentamente y dura varios días, con lo que la planta luces más porque permanecen varia flores abiertas simultáneamente, además, como sucede con las rosas, al ser la luz del sol más dédil, saturan más los colores.

In literal terms, the Sanskrit word samsara means "flowing on" or "passing through." It is illustrated by the Wheel of Life and explained by the Twelve Links of Dependent Origination.
It might be understood as the state of being bound by greed, hate, and ignorance, or as a veil of illusion that hides true reality. In traditional Buddhist philosophy, we are trapped in samsara through one life after another until we find awakening through enlightenment.
For many Indian spiritual traditions, Samsara — particularly as it refers to death and rebirth — is something we seek to escape. This experience of escape, sometimes called Nirvana or Moksha, allows us to stop returning to earth. Instead, we are able to experience our true nature as divinity. This idea, then, is at the heart of the grandest wisdom traditions ever known to humanity. It is a way of seeing not only the course our own souls travel, but the course of all things — by the very nature of their being.

Oscar Wilde’s words suggest that human behavior, actions, and even societal trends are often shaped by the artistic representations that precede them. While he likely meant this figuratively, this photo serves as a reminder that it can be true in a literal sense as well. In the image, a street scene captures a graffiti-covered power box featuring Van Gogh, coincidentally aligned with a passerby whose appearance matches the artwork. Although it seems like mere chance, the photo reflects the intricate relationship between reality and imagination, converging on a common theme.
To capture this moment, I spent time roaming the streets, observing people. When I stumbled upon the power box, I thought it would make a great shot if a person who matched the art happened to walk by. From there, it was a matter of waiting and hoping. Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t. But when it does, the satisfaction is undeniable. Some say there’s a subconscious pull that draws the right person to the right object. I’m not sure, but in moments like this, it’s clear that art truly does mirror life.
Caption literal translation is 'having no fingers to play the piano', a common saying around here to someone who has no aptitude or skill to do a particular thing.
I can punch the keys but definitely can't play the piano, so pun intended :-)

Literal use of "cool". We found this huge 9x7 bull elk on a cold, frosty morning in Jasper National Park. Close observation will reveal frost on his neck and the condensation of his breath. With high temps and high humidity in KC, I felt like a mental break from the heat. I posted other shots of this bull previously...he's impressive enough to deserve a another.

In 1984, Southern Pacific 4449 pulled an all-daylight painted passenger consist on a 7,477 mile round trip from Portland, Oregon to the World's Fair in New Orleans, Louisiana and return. It would become the longest steam train excursion in the history of the United States.
Doug photographed 4449's journey in several locations in Arizona. This view was made at the famous Cienega Creek flyover, 20 miles east of Tucson, Arizona. If you look closely, a crowd of people are standing on the Marsh Station Road bridge to take in the show.
Cienega, meaning "swamp" or "marsh", is a Spanish word derived from its literal translation “hundred waters” or “cien aguas”.
The slide mount indicates the photo was published at some point.
The literal translation of the German name of the Great Egret is "Silver egret", so the title is a little pun in German, with this bird clearly not being a Silver Egret, a Golden Egret being non-existent as a species (even in German), and the bird pictured here is a Little Egret.

This is one of my favourite photos from my trip to Japan. Japan is amazing, it's so much different than Iceland while being similar at the same time. Two, volcanic islands with breathtaking landscapes. What I find most curious are the "marimo", round balls of algae that can only be found in two lakes in the world: Lake Mývatn in northern Iceland and in Lake Akan in Japan. If anyone speaks Japanese I'd love to know the literal meaning of the word "Marimo". The Icelandic word for this is "Kúluskítur" which translates to "Spherical shit".
This is taken in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo. It was raining and I snuck out after dark to photograph this place. I'm not sure what this area is called but the address is: Japan, 〒160-0023 Tokyo, Shinjuku City, Nishishinjuku, 1 Chome−12−5 ぶらんしぇビル (I'll just note it on the map to the right). This required minimal processing.
I guess the literal translation would be The Great Hall of Heavens.
Devonian sandstone outcropping on the river Ahja. The river itself flows just in front of it. Unfortunately it's not visible in this image, because i don't have wide enough lens to fit them both in the frame, so it's taken from further away.
The place is also an ancient sacred shrine ("hiis" in Estonian) and the source of myriad of pagan myths and legends.
It's also quite difficult to get well lit shots of this. The outcropping faces north-east and is surrounded by tall forest so even the early morning sun doesn't reach it.
The hight is about 23 m or 75 ft.
The image is composed of 10 portrait exposures, stiched together in Hugin.
After literal years of rumours swirling around that the CN SD70is/75is would be rebuilt by Progress Rail, the first batch were released in the second half of 2024. Not many have made their way to the Champlain Division, but there have been the occasional few, almost exclusively trailing on 120/121. There was another kicking around, 8300 as the eastbound leader on L508 running east from Moncton, for a few weeks, but running nocturnally 99% of the time. However, there's always an exception to the rule, as was the case on the second Saturday in March this year. CN L50811 07 has gotten re-crewed in Truro and is now on the final stretch, passing the intermediate at M1.7 of the Dartmouth Sub in Waverley with fresh SD75iACC, 8300 (ex-5725) & 8896 on March 8, 2025.

The original Babysitting (as one of the 5year olds said). The Plover's wing spurs are clearly visible: you don't want to be dive-bombed by an angry Plover!
The Plover family set up 'home' in my work's carpark. At the beginning and end of the day they spend their time aggressively defending their three chicks from children, parents and cars! Traffic cones are in place to try and protect them but the chicks are starting to wander so my very brave boss relocated the 3 chicks to a grassy strip beside the building. The parents complained loudly and swooped but have accepted the move.
Literal wall flowers! Saw these growing out of the street side of the high, stone wall of the old Dalry Cemetery. You can find little natural pieces of beauty in all sorts of place.
The literal translation of Barcaccia is the “Fountain of the Old Boat.” This fountain was built as a monument to the great flood of the river Tiber in the Christmas of 1598. During that time, Rome was flooded in its entirety that the only possible way was to go about in boats. According to stories, a boat was left in the square when the flood water subsided. Hence, the inspiration for this work of art.

Doncs sí, és literalment un gamarús de Laponia (strix nebulosa). Probablement l'au de presa noctura més espectacular que podeu veure. Tot i que no tant gros com el duc, el seu gran plomatge circular al entorn d'uns ulls grocs inmensos augmenten la seva magnificencia. I tot i la seva mida el seu vol és d'un silenci absolut.
Pel seu nom entendreu que obviament no és tipic de Catalunya, sino de climes artics. Fotografiat al Cim d'Àligues, de St. Feliu de Codines.

This is a great grey owl (strix nebulosa). Probably the most spectacular night bird of prey in the World. Although not as large as the eurasian eagle-owl, its great circular plumage (facial disk) around its large yellow eyes increases his magnificence. And despite its size its flight is of absolute silence.

It has been literal years since we've had a genuine white Christmas, but this year has been different. On the first full official day of winter, we got a good dumping of snow, and then yesterday, (Christmas Eve), another healthy helping. On the morning of December 23rd, I had last minute Christmas errands to run and found myself trackside in the fresh powder first thing. Rockingham local 521 is seen hauling down the North track in HOT with a pair of SD70M-2s powering the transfer from Rockingham as the sun is slowly just starting to touch the tops of the trees. A very Merry Christmas to each and every one of you, as my family and I celebrate the real reason for the season, the birth of Christ!

Las primeras nevadas de invierno son tan poco copiosas que apenas cubren la alta montaña granadina, pero tan solo unas semanas después, se sucederían importantes temporales de nieve acompañados de heladas intensas que formarían una capa de nieve asombrosa hasta bien entrado el verano, fue uno de los años de mas nieve que se recuerde en Sierra Nevada, hasta tal punto que los remontes de las pistas de esquí, permanecieron cerrados ante la imposibilidad de quitar la nieve que enterraba literalmente los postes del tendido, la nieve tapaba hasta los cables, dichos postes tienen una altura superior a 6m.
